The original Lincoln Navigator was the ultimate SUV from 20 years ago. Today I'm reviewing a 1999 Lincoln Navigator to show you why the first Lincoln Navigator was such an icon -- and I'm going to show you why the Navigator started a trend that exploded afterwards. I'm also driving the Navigator to explain how it drives.

Actually the engine is very unique. It wasn’t the same 5.4 you got in the Expedition or F-150 at the time. The Intech was rated at 300 horsepower throughout this model’s run. It was a DOHC 4-valve that also served as the basis for the 5.4 in the Cobra R Mustang, the GT500 and Ford GT. Too bad Doug didn’t do a little bit of research before hand.

I remember these were huge 20+ years ago. I remember getting a sound system installed in my car at "Car Sound" off Roswell Rd in Atlanta late 90s and sitting next to my car was a black navigator owned by the Rap R&B singer Keith Sweat. It was top dog only under euro sedans. Expensive or nice 90s cars were mostly good cars and very well made for their time. I can tell Doug liked the ride quality but couldn't show it too much because to most folks its now considered a POS. I'd prefer the way this Navigator drives and works over the new one. Simple and connected. In 20 years the new Navigator will be driving with many issues from infotainment wear to turbos that no longer push air.
I daily drive a 2006 F350 Diesel. The steering wheel, adjustable pedals, and many other things are identical to this. I actually love having the volume, and climate buttons right there! It's a fantastically convenient place for them and I wish more cars did this. Especially the climate controls.
I have crossed out "USE LINCOLN NAVIGATOR AS AN AMBULANCE" from my to-do list

@Andrew Smith you want to know what's better? SEARGENT INSURANCE!!
Thank you Doug for finding a nice clean example, all the ones I see in the wild (if any) all look like beaters.
Key point missed - the Navigator got the DOHC 4v 5.4l, everything else of the era with a Ford 5.4l(which the "InTec" is) got a SOHC 2v. Of course, a DOHC V8 was quite exotic back then, which went hand-in-hand with the "luxury" positioning of the Navigator. Frankly, the DOHC Modular V8s are just better too; flow much more air, made more power with a broader power band, just much more drivable engines. The only other DOHC V8 Fords back then were older '90s Lincoln RWD coupes, Mustang Cobras with the 4.6l, and the Mercury Marauder also received one of those NA DOHC Cobra 4.6ls, and the only-300-made 2000 Cobra R got the DOHC 5.4l(WAY different cylinder heads than any previous DOHC Ford, eventually evolved into what went on the GT & GT500). Otherwise, Ford trucks with the 5.4l only received SOHC 2v & 3v(in '05ish+) heads, even the supercharged Lightning(2v heads & garbo rods are its Achilles heal, compared to all other supercharged V8 Ford). Of course, the Coyote 5.0l(& derivatives) is only a DOHC now since we're at the 400HP minimum for medium displacement V8s at this point, and, frankly, I believe that every single other Ford engine today is a DOHC 4v too for that matter(except for the 6.2l SOHC V8, and the 6.7l diesel is a pushrod 4v), now that we're in an era of major focus on maximizing HP/l for the sake of downsizing, and cylinder head flow is the most critical aspect of maximizing power output. Every Ford engine except the new monster 'Godzilla' 7.3l pushrod V8 of course...
Had a '98 Eddie Bauer Expedition about 10 years ago. Had the 5.4 with a cold air intake, headers and a tune. Also had the air suspension that raised it when you put it in 4 low. I kind of miss it.
I always see these with collapsed suspension and sounding like they’re running on three cylinders. Thank you Doug for finding a clean one!

@Roddy Dykes You're my kind of cookie.
🤣✌️👍 Knowing that you are on your wonderful world trip, you're doing well on the video's. I just watched the crazy lexus sports car video from 2017,still the same enthusiasm. Thanks Doug and keep it up, happy holidays dude and the lady.
Doug, I saw an International Harverster Scout II yesterday. I know you really like boxy four wheel drives, and this one is a beauty. I think your viewers would enjoy it if you could find one in your area to review. The one I saw was white and had the top off, which gave it a striking, clean profile.

Loving this kind of videos - Old luxury vintage SUVs! It reminds me of my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. Yow Mr. Doug keep on creating something like this old lux. - from Philippines 🇵🇭
Speaking of badged engineered luxury vehicles, it will be so funny if Doug did a video on the Cadillac Cimarron! I would love to to see Doug's reaction driving that.
Doug, I love you, but I'm not entirely convinced you're not two tweens in a trench coat. I don't care how old you say you are, I'm pretty sure you just popped into existence one day in 2014. Continuous bewilderment over EQ settings, not knowing what the fast-forward/rewind switch is for on a cassette player, etc., etc.... there's no way this dude spent any part of his life in the '90s or even early '00s, there's just no way.

He was once SURPRISED that 30 year old car had an "Old School" shifter!!! - JEEZUS!!! He'd be SHOCKED that my circa 1878 built house was NOT built with central A/C or that the TRS-80 Model III that I bought in 1981 had no WiFi or USB 3.0. This brought back my childhood. My mom had the exact same Navigator (color-wise, but a 2000 year model) just with less fake wood, which I highly doubt was a dealer accessory. She loved it so much she traded it in 2005 for a fully loaded black on gray 2006 Navigator Ultimate. We were so blown away by the cooled seats, power liftgate and running boards, and both cars brought many good memories. She was excited for the next generation until the 2007 dropped and came with that hideous face, so she moved on to the 2007 Escalade, and later a 2010. They never did give us that same feeling the Navigators did. My favorite quirk of the 2000 Navi was the "stadium" setting on the radio. So much reverberation 😅
