I actually made them myself when I heard of them. By the time I discovered them they weren't being sold anymore, so I took some Hershey's chocolate, melted it, and dipped some Lay's Wavy chips into it. Then we put them in the fridge to set. My mom and I shared them and we agreed it was the best thing we ever tasted. And being a huge chocolate fan, I can't wait to make them again. I think I'll show Dad how to make them sometime, when I go to see him.
the ultimate problem with Pumpkin SPICE everything is that way too many people who don't know that it's meant to be just the spice mixture that goes into/on pumpkin pies instead of pumpkin and spice, so you'll get massive errors like, "pumpkin flavored M&Ms," and "The original Pumpkin Spice Latte contained no pumpkin".

Honestly as a coffee fan, I remembering being incredibly underwhelmed by Blak Cola? It just tasted like flatter, more bitter Cola. But I'm actually pretty fond of the new kinds they've put out, so I have a feeling they must have taken it back to the drawing board and tweaked the formula enough to make it actually... y'know... palatable. That said, it's still horrible health-wise and probably a one way trip to stomach ulcers, so. EDIT: a thought; Lay's would be a lot more successful with their chocolate covered chips if it were something like drizzling or stripes, a la Keebler's Fudge Stripes perhaps.

Crystal Pepsi was just barely before my time... I formed a secondhand opinion about it based on folks' demonization of it. Then I found out about the only thing changed that had any bearing on the experience was that it wasn't brown. That folks would freak out so much at the idea of a cola that looks like water when they'd happily drink Sprite or unconvincing 'fruit drinks' colored like hydraulic fluids seems absolutely brain-dead. On a cola label's short list of ingredients, which I figure everyone must read at least once if only out of boredom, there's always one ingredient that's memorably plainspoken and simple in name-- 'caramel coloring'. That's an explicit admission the brown color is just for show!

I'd be interested to see you make a Discontinued Sodas list, Strider, you'd have a lot to pick from. One of my favorite flavors of Mountain Dew was discontinued, that was Mtn Dew Ice. It was a more crisp and fresher lemonade taste to the original, and a bit less acidic too. I think it was launched in Summer 2018 and I really enjoyed the taste. But for some reason after 2019 and especially once the Pandemic hit, I saw Mtn Dew Ice less and less until I found out it was discontinued. Apparently, despite how hard they pushed the marketing in North America, no one really like the taste I suppose. One funny thing is that this is not the first time Cadbury used alien characters to advertise their products. In the 1970s, there was a series of commercials for Cadbury Smash, an instant mashed potato mix, that had Martians laughing at certain Terrans for making mashed potatoes the traditional way instead of using Smash.

Hey, really interesting video. It might please you to know that we still have Time Out bars here in England. Still take them to work in my packed lunch 😃
17:12 I actually tried the Hersey Peppermint Swoops before. They were the only one of the Swoops that I actually liked as they were better then just buying the Peppermint Candy Bar that Hersey also released around the same time. Like, it actually tasted better somehow. Maybe because of the more thinned shape? Though, as mentioned in the video, you did not get many "Swoops" per package, and they cost almost $2~$3 more then a standard candybar, and normally weighed overall less then a normal bar. So it wasn't only the number of "chips" you got, but you were effectively paying more for less at the same time.

How can you show but not mention LA Beast 😭… the KZreadr holding the six pack at 12:17 single-handed brought back Crystal Pepsi through a fan-funded marketing campaign that included a bunch of promotion, rallying, and even a music video called “The Crystal Pepsi Song”. It’s really a wild ride, maybe future video idea?
These lists, and this one in particular, remind me of the College Humor video of Oreo's CEO. He starts ranting and raving when given more and more pointless and insane Oreo variants to promote to us. "'Arbor Day Oreos, with.... REAL WOOD?!'"
I actually was pleasantly surprised by Crystal Pepsi. The reason being that regular Pepsi upset my stomach and I couldn't drink it. The Crystal Pepsi gave me none of those bad side effects. I think I had an issue with the caramel coloring that Pepsi was using at that time because I can drink it now, no problems.
Back in 2011 my local shoprite I was working in had crystal Pepsi for sale and I got to say, the lack of acid taste was amazing. Given a few of us suffered from acid reflex, crystal Pepsi was a welcome drink that helped relieve that burn in our throats.

My mom and I both loved those chocolate covered Lays chips. We only ever saw them around Christmas and we've kept looking for them every holiday season, but hasn't seen them in a while.
New coke or coke II was sold on Oahu, Hawaii in most stores through 1999 maybe later it seemed to be a local island favorite. When we were stationed there we were surprised to see it and retried it several times for the nostalgia of it.

Like sugar and Bubblegum. :) Edit; I forgot to mention that Crystal Pepsi was back on the shelves a few years ago for a couple months. You can thank the LA foodbeast for that. I respect how petty Coca Cola was with Tab, it took balls and worked out for them.
Aww, I remember the "Swoops! There it is!" commercials. Their snack pak size made them good for school lunches.
The biggest battle for snack manufacturers is always over shelf space, so it's important to note that new varieties can help the company even if they don't last because stores tend to still order and pack out the same number of the standard flavors, but also make room for the new ones (often giving them promotional signage or end caps to boot). This is why there's always a third flavor of Doritos available.

I had the displeasure of tasting Hubba Bubba soda as a kid. The battery acid effect did not go well with the sweet bubble gum flavor. I tried it as an ice cream soda and ended up throwing the whole thing away.
There was a bubblegum-flavored soda I tried a couple years ago called "Chubby." It was sweet, but not sickeningly so. Still, just tasted like the same artificial flavor as bubblegum-flavored ice cream, lollipops, or, well... bubblegum. Not a personal favorite but at least interesting.

Oh, these commercials, though! The 1980s and 1990s were a golden age of apeshit advertising 'fluff'. *Anything in the world* might be treated like the most important, versatile or fantastic thing in history; people on the screen lost all connection with reality as they went bonkers; acid-trips to inexplicably themed fantasy worlds were common. Ad campaigns might not even bother to try and show a connection between their motifs and the products. Meanwhile we just sat on the sofa watching, so used to seeing it that nothing seemed amiss.
"But, Your Highness, she is just a commoner. Her Slurm will taste foul." "Yes. That's why we will market it as New Slurm. Then, when everyone hates it, we'll bring back Slurm Classic, and make BILLIONS!"
About 10 years ago, I recall being on a boat to Wales, as I was visiting for a few, and me, being 11 and seeing mint chocolates but in the shape of Pringles and in a Pringles can, I couldn't *not* try it. I think they were meant to be cake toppers, but I ate them like chips. Can confirm, had that been the experience for the Swoops? I would have been head over heels for those suckers, they were amazing!! The shape and way it broke when I popped it in my mouth, along with it being real chocolate, when a lot of what I got was faker, *and* my adoration of mint, made it a very enjoyable experience I very much miss.
Timeouts used to be my favourite. They used to be called just "timeout" and then they rebranded it as "timeout wafer" I think the problem was there was too much wafer in this iteration so it didn't grow on people as much as the old version. I for one was happy to see it back then immediately disappointed with what they had done to my favourite snack 😫

I tried them. They were actually really really good. The reason why it didn't sell well as because people turn their nose up to the thought of eating a piece of chocolate in the shape of a chip. At least, that's what most people complained about when I asked them.
If you want to know what the bubblegum soda likely tasted like, just get Big Red. It's marketed as a "red cream soda" but it's just bubblegum flavored and it's why I liked it as a kid. But it hasn't been discontinued either, so it's easier to find.
I remember swoops- I worked at Hersheypark during their release time and they were somewhat popular at the park. They gave them out after getting off the Cholocate World Factory Tour ride at the visitor center. They were very smooth and tasted just like the Hershey Drops that are still on the market today. I know one confusion that killed it shortly was people thought it had potato chips in it, which it did not. Hershey needed to explain that without dunking on chips.
I remember Hershey Swoops. My main memory of them is eating them in a nice grocery store on a fun family road trip. It tasted pretty good. Thinking about them brings back that happy memory.
Failed sodas, please. I'm loving you discussing old foods. It's nostalgic.
Howdy, 'Strider! Here in the US, where many of these confections are made, I've often been baffled by how these things were changed up. I'm not against broadening brand diversity & some of the experiments work (some of the Oreo changes, for example, are great, particularly the chocolate based ones, but most are...less so. Take the humble Twinkie. It's a classic because it hit a great synergy of flavor & richness. The bakery behind it didn't want to risk poisoning the brand, so they used to be very careful on changing it up. For decades, the only variant available was the devil's food cake. Now? Hel!, every single season they introduce some neon colored cream monstrosity to flog on us!...😠
