2:54 thank you for adding the sound. Most reviewers talk about noise levels without playing it.

My Sony 50mm 1.8 Video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5yX2pmDebOpqpM.html My Sony 50mm 1.2GM Video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o3qpu7l_qMyvZso.html Not my typical lens review, but had a good time making this one! The difference between the most expensive and most affordable 50mm Sony prime is pretty large, as you would expect given the $1750 price difference. But the 1.8 and 1.2 each have their use-cases. I still think the 1.8 is the best lens for beginners to learn on, while the 50mm 1.2 is a great workhorse for professionals wanting the best image quality

Which version of firmware was in the 1.8? I’ve seen that it’s much better with latest firmware??

Once again really great video, nice job. Could you compare them by shooting a model at waste high, wide open, 40’ from the background with some particles in there? I want to see the fall off difference. Thank you.

Thanks for the kind words, I no longer have the 50mm 18, as I'm always using my 50mm 1.2 instead. If I get another 50 18, I'll do some more tests!

I know both are 50mm in focal length but I've heard the 1.2 gm is more like 47mm. From your test, are they both the same?

Did the 50mm 1.8 had firmware 03 during the tests? Apparently it really boosts the AF

i have the 50 f1.8 with a sony a7c they're as light as most of the shrunken aps-c camsm and the 20x24 family prints they've produced have documented an extended family in all 5 seasons - w,s, su, aut, and indoors. with good indoor lighting provided by replacing regular bulbs with those "garage monster multi leds" we can usually shoot at f4-5.6, the lens' sweet spot and get luminance so as to avoid any posed look all with a lens/camera combination that doesn't scream "paparazzi" to everyone within 100 feet.

Can you redo this vs. a kit lens, and then do a test with regular people looking at the pics on 1/ Instagram , 2/ On a 27 inch screen and 3/ as 5X7 prints and 4/ 8X10 prints and see if people can figure out which is best (and test at full open, F2.8 and F4).

I have and regularly use the f1.8. I'd need to up my photography game significantly before I could take full advantage of the quality differences between it and the f1.2. In short, I could never justify paying the a price difference higher than the cost of the Sony A7 iii body I'm using.

Since I made this, Sony came out with the 50mm 1.4 that is a little more affordable. I havent used it but it's significantly better than the 1.8

@@keith-knittel Quite true. It's also literally 10x the price right now where I live in the Netherlands (€1699,- vs €169,-). Coincidentally, it's EXACTLY the same price as a new Sony A7 iii body right now 😄. I think I'll keep working on getting my skills with the 50mm up to a point where I could see the difference in my own photos...

I can't really answer that without knowing more about your shooting style and situation (not trying to give a cop-out answer) but that could be a cool video to make in the future! Would that be something you're interested in seeing a comparison of?

@@keith-knittel that would be a very interesting video for sure especially coming from someone like you who have owned the 50mm GM 1.2 which is a kickass lens no questions but the $2K price tag is definitely for professionals to justify. I stayed away from Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA Lens ($1500) because too many reviewers on the B&H website complained about the build quality which is not the case for the 55mm 1.8. Lastly a new Sony 55mm 1.8 can be had on Ebay for less than $600. Thanks Keith take care buddy and keep the videos coming

In my opinion if you’re just taking stills the 1.8 is perfect if you’re not a pixel peeper. The GM is the best but is big and heavy, if you don’t mind that.
