Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS vs 50mm f1.8 FE - WHICH IS BETTER & WHY?

Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS vs 50mm f1.8 FE - WHICH IS BETTER & WHY?
First thing we have to talk about in this video is what the lenses were built for. Yes, there is a major difference between these two lenses. One is designed for full frame and the other is designed for aps-c cameras. This could be major for someone owning a full frame camera as it can limit your versatility and performance depending on the situation.
In this video I dive much deeper into which is best for who and why it is best. It still depends what you are wanting to film and most importantly which camera you have. The 50mm lens can be a really good focal length but you need to understand how each of these lenses perform to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

Really great and helpful video. I have to admit when I got my Sony 50mm OSS, I didn't really like it. I was pretty disappointed with the crop factor. BUT, after watching this video and updating it's firmware it's not hated as much anymore. Just FYI ( and I think you illustrate this in the video) But I got 2768x1848 in APSC crop mode and 4240x2832 in the clear image zoom at a 1.2 crop which got past the vignette issues. thanks again Jason!

Great review man! I like the thoroughness and depth. I noticed it seems you rotoed yourself out when you did your little cameo screen right to invite people to subscribe. The edges jittered a bit so it looks like you rotoscoped yourself out. Am I right? Another easier technique is to do a split screen comp. Since the camera is locked, just shoot your second element and composite along the floor lamp in the bg. The dark wall is a perfect place to have a blended edge seam.

Ola, the A6000 will just about do it all! We have taken some incredible photos of mushrooms, stalks of grain, dog faces, etc.,with the 16-50mm. Add the Sony E 35 f1.8 w OSS and the Sony E 50 OSS and you're basically THERE,for pics or video. Also, the other kit lens that shows up with the A6000,cant recall what it is at the moment, but Jason reviewed it,too. Jason is a huge help,a force of nature!

The best comparison of these two lenses! I have watched many. I have the e OSS that I purchased for my Sony a6100 and now I have purchased the A7Riii, I was thinking about buying the FE version, but looks like I can use the e OSS just fine. I also learned that I still get 18 mega pixels in APSC mode. At least, I am not in a hurry to buy a new portrait lens. I already have the Tamron 28-200mm as "everything" lens.

What I have noticed sony isn't like canon where the OSS works with the IBIS. Sony chooses one and not both. So having the 50mm FE would be almost same and using the 50mm OSS will just make it a 75mm lens with the crop that you will have to use.

I have a really stupid question. This is old so you may not answer you may not answer anyway but..... If a 50mm lens is MADE for a APS-C sensor why is it not 50mm why do you have to take the crop into account? It is 50mm for a APS-C so why is it not 50mm? Everyone I watch says take the crop into account but its 50mm made for a APS-C should be 50mm it's confusing. If you use a full frame lens taking the crop into account makes sense.

At 7:24 - see that shiftiness? I hate that. That really bugs me and makes shots looks really unprofessional and not smooth. I think the solution is to turn OFF OSS and just use stabilization in post with software. That also has its drawbacks and limitations. How do you guys deal with this? Also, I have read and experienced a type of "pumping" effect when AF-C is on. It happens on static images, like walls and such. I'll update later. Edit: That pumping is actually FOCUS BREATHING. The only true solution is to shoot with manual focus or just edit that out and try to keep away from non textured surfaces or surfaces with too many depth changes.

Does the OSS on a APSC body behave like a 50mm or a 75mm?

You still have to use the crop factor, an apsc lens on an apsc camera is usually lighter, smaller, and cheaper.

is it that bad to use the OSS on a Sony A7c?

  • @JasonMorrisphotocinema

Nah, not bad. Just not optimal. The a7c had ibis so lens stability isn't needed and the 50mm FE would do fine

I have a APS-C camera Sony A6100, which does not have image stabilization on body. I have two choices I am considering: should I buy - a F1.8 OSS lens OR - a F1.4 FE lens? I mean, will the better F-level compensate the missing OSS?

To shoot in low light get 1.4 if u doing only photography and for videos and photography get oss since it would be more stable 1.8 also will do good in low light

Are you sure that Sony IBIS does not work with OSS?? Others on the web seem to disagree - for example- kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKGLyrZ6faqvfdY.html I'd love to know since I do try to purchase OSS lenses (for my FX 30) since I do not like to have to use gimbals if possible...
