Kit lens for sony 16-50 has one useful option. You can test all popular focal distance and distortion with one kit lens. It's 16, 18, 23, 30, 35, 50. Try to use this focal distance one buy one every day. One day with 16 next day with other and you will understand what focal distance prime lens to buy first. Forget about bokeh on kit but you can check focal.

The Tamron 11-20 F2.8 is nothing short of amazing and so is the 17-70mm F2.8. Also, I highly suggest you test the new Sigma 100 - 400mm for mirrorless full frame but I use it on my a6500. So, when I go for a long Himalayan trip I take the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 (manual, small, good quality and great for astro pics under the high-altitude Himalayan skies) and the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8, the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 and the Sigma 100-400mm, covering all the focal length I need for all my work and that I carry in an around the waist sling bag. Besides, the Samyang 100mm F2.8 macro and the Samyang 135mm F2.0, both manual lenses are amazing sharp and beautiful bokah. Also, among my favorite lenses are the two Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and 50-100mm F1.8, bot fixed aperture lenses both with the MC-11 mounted to my a6500. Of course the Sigma trip 16mm, 30mm and 56mm all F1.4 is a must for any APS-C shooter. The 56mm in particular is one of the sharpest lenses one can get.

The sigma 56mm 1.4 is my first prime lens and I'm still impressed by its sharpness (as a comparison I only have the Kit lens 16-50). Especially at F2.8 all of the portraits are razorsharp and you can see every eyelash clearly ♥️ My next lens will be the sigma 18-50 2.8 I guess since I love the small size together with the good image quality. The sony 16-55 is too expensive for me and the tamron 17-70 is to big for hiking. Greetings from Germany 😀

As usual, a really practical review of lens ,maybe not so much the Sony kit zoom, that have received really positive reviews for some years. Would be very interested in a review of the recent Tamron wide angle zoom- have never read, seen so many totally all out reviews in print and on YT. Be interested in your thoughts on the Sony 18-135. Was not available when I wanted a more versatile lens and purchased Sony 18-105 f4. Appears, from other reviews, that these lens are pretty comparable, so will no doubt keep the 18- 104 f4. Thanks for the ongoing practical content. I suspect many Sony apsc users don't need manual focus Zeiss lens that cost a fortune.

My favourite lens would be almost also the sigma 56mm but there ist one lens I prefer over it. And thats the Sony 70-350. Even though it might not be fitting for many users, I really think it is missing in this video. It is extremly sharp at all focal lengths, at full zoom its "only" sharp. I found myself using this lens only on vacations, because it is so versatile. I can do portraits with it, photograph wildlife, do landscape shots. And for everything which is wide angle I use my phone - though in future I will buy the Tamron 11-20 and maybe even an a6000 as 2nd camera. Nice video as always ! :D

Hi Kyle! I'm looking to see if there's a lens that is worth upgrading my kit lens with. It didn't sound like any of the 10 on your list were quite what I'm looking for. Currently I use my a6000 for a static shot on a tripod to record video of a subject that is typically 6-8ish feet away. There's some action in the shot with the subject moving, but the background is static. If possible, something that is less wide than the kit lens would be great. I would like a smaller field of view to fill up the screen, and hopefully to keep a clear background, instead of having background blur. Thank you!

  • @kyletaggart

    @kyletaggart

    Жыл бұрын

Clear background vs background being blurred - is just based on settings, not the lens itself. Higher aperture (f stop) and the more of what’s in view will be in focus. F8 for example would have the subject and the background in focus, where as f1.8 would be just the subject in focus (depending how far the background is from the subject). The kit lens can zoom in to 50mm. So if you want something that zooms in further, but also has versatility, the Sony 18-105 f4 G OSS is a great all around lens, and could essentially replace your kit lens. Unless you want to keep the kit lens because of its small compact size and that it goes slightly wider at the widest it can go.

I have the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 it's my first fix lens and so far I've been quite proud of it, the sharpness of it is just incredible, I mean like f/1.4 at aprice that low? man that's a bargain. The only thing that i dislike about it is the chromatic aberration it makes. Sometimes is a pain in the arse, your image has to be really in focus, and be sure not too maximized the f if the object is quite far, because you'll get those purple, green lines around the object just like in 17:07 around the "e" and "p"

  • @kyletaggart

There doesn’t exist one for APSC lenses. There are a few options for full frame that you can use on the a6000. The longest zoom on the APSC side is the Sony 70-350mm G. Which is a full frame equivalent of 105-525mm. For full frame (FE) there is a Sony 600mm f4, Sony 200-600mm, and a 400mm f2.8. If you are on a budget and want smaller size by a long shot, I’d suggest the Sony 70-350mm APSC. Start with that, and go from there. I’d you’re like whoa all these prices are insane, then start with the Sony 55-210mm.

Maybe not as much. I have a lot of lenses so it's hard to answer lol. I really liked the freedom of the 18-50, bc it's like having a few primes in one. If I'm going somewhere where light may be an issue, I'd take an f1.4 or f1.8 probably.

I think so - however it’s not super noticeable for objects like stars that is such a wide distance. You’ll see it much more prevalent with things like a human face the closer you are. In Lightroom you can simply click a button to fix. But for Astro, it’s not a deal breaker imo.

Optical Steady Shot - OSS on Sony lenses )helps if you’re shooting hand held). Every manufacturer has a diff name for image stabilization. Other than that you’re looking for lenses (probably shown in reviews / test footage, that have smooth focusing. That don’t bounce around when focus transitions from one object to another. The Sony 18-105mm G F4 OSS is a good all around video lens. It also has a power zoom so you can zoom in smoothly. Ppl use manual / prime lenses for video / cinema, it’s really whatever works for you. You may find you don’t even need auto focus for video projects like short films/music videos in the long run.

That is a good option for both photos and video. For sports you might find need a little more reach as you gain experience. The Sony 55-210mm lens can be found cheap used. I’d recommend that for outdoor stuff. Just because it’s quite cheap. Pricey but maybe best would be the Sony 70-350mm G lens.

    HAVE YOU TRYED VILTROX 20MM F 2.8?

For a long time, I've had for my A6000 the 50mm OSS, the Samyang 12mm F2 MF (which deserves an honourable mention, or perhaps the newer AF version - sharp even in the corners!)...and a big gap between. The 30mm macro rarely gets used and I recently confirmed it's not good at infinity focus. I'm watching the Sigmas 16 and 30, Sony 35 OSS, and most recently possibly the best fit for the middle of a 12/x/50 trio - the Viltrox 23mm. Or, I pony up for the Sigma 18-50. It's a tough decision.

I absolutely love the Viltrox 23mm. Little vingetting at the corners at 1.4, but love the lens. The Sony 35mm oss was my first lens after the kit, forever a favorite. The sigma 18-50, superb. Used it entirely on my honeymoon (did a review on it).

I think the Viltrox 23mm is a great bang for the buck. It’s one of my favorite lenses. I haven’t updated it, but it’s probably gotten a little better since my review. It has a slight vignette at f1.4. I have not used the sel24f18z besides in store once, it seems nice, and this is just a guess but the focusing might be slower on it because it was an earlier lens for the a6000. Also the price, but used at $400ish is a nice price. The Samyang I have not used, it’s full frame so field of view would be diff than the other two. The sigma 30mm f1.4 is also another nice choice, sharp, but a little tighter than the Viltrox and Sony.

awesome! congrats on the a6700 and all that glass. You kinda have sports covered with the zooms. I'd say if you want to maybe solo portaits checkout the Sigma 56mm f1.4, it's the best in their trio of 1.4 lenses. Sony's 50mm f1.8 is an older but still fantastic portrait lens as well. If you find 200mm or 250mm isn't long enough, there is a great all around lens in the Tamron 18-300 that I have a review on. It's bigger, but it's a great lens for all sorts of scenarios. Lastly, for really small size, but fun range and a great aperture at 2.8, the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is great. I did one of my favorite videos ever on that lens. Sometimes it's about what the lens can do for you, but A LOT of the time it's how you prep as well. The lenses you have are all great. Available light, weather, time of day, is a huge factor, and when you add your own light you can really flex the capabilities of the gear you're about to have. It's fun to collect lenses, but remember you're diving in with a bunch and should be sure to use them a ton, maybe before deciding on the next! Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it!

I’ve used both the 16 (borrowed) and the 20 pancakes. In fact, i bought the 20mm a second time after selling my first copy a few years ago and came to regret it. The 20mm is definitely better that the 16mm pancake. Wide open, the 20mm is fairly sharp in the middle, the 16mm is not. At f4, the edges starts to catch up, and at f5.6, sharpness is good accross the whole image. Flare control is excellent, and CA is not a problem (maybe just a bit around the edges at f2.8) Having such a small dimension has it’s shortcomings (of course), one being that the image quality starts to go down after f8. Vignetting & distortion also quite heavy without correction. If you shoot street, and normally work between f4 and f8, this lens is a good alternative. I would really recommend it if you can get it at a cheaper price used. I got my current one for about USD 120.

So I was thinking that a prime with 1.8 or 1.4 would be better so that i could step down at 2 . I have the a6600 and was thinking that oss of the sony 50mm would also help me with that. I stay at the baseline and shoot my team when attacking.

Hi everyone, I need help. I have this a6400 w/ 35mm f1.8 oss combo. I don't have problem with that setup. But Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 came and somehow I'm planning to replace my 35mm w/ 18-50mm. My main reason is 'versatility' of the lens and sad to say I can't keep both right now. I do some photographs and currently learning all about videos(hopefully really soon I'll be able to release my first video) Anw, What do you think shoul I do? I need advice, thanks a lot! -Love from PH

I think you should switch. Give it a shot, YOLO lol. But for real, the signs is a lot of fun, and my personal opinion, having a zoom (even a small one) is a ton of fun on trips where being light is key. You can always sell/ go back to the 35mm later down the line and vice versa. 👍🏻

The sigma 56mm 1.4 is a top 3 apsc lens. I’ve used it for both pics and video and the autofocus works great! I’m sad it’s not on here as people would benefit from using such a powerful lens 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s not good optically as the 18-105 f4, and it’s a variable aperture lens. So when zoomed at 210mm you have to shoot at f6.3. The 18-105 can be at f4 at any focal length. The tamron is also variable aperture, but a very wide focal range. I think the 55-210 is a great starter lens. 👍🏻

Imo if you are using a non IBIS Sony A6*** camera... You will only need these 3 zoom lenses. 1. Sony 70-350mm G OSS 2. Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 3. Sony 10-18mm f4 OSS That will give you stability built into all 3 lenses and a reach from 10mm to 350mm before taking into consideration sensor crop factor.

Probably a zoom lens, and I think the Sigma 18-50mm would be perfect. Or even the Sony 55-210mm. As for a prime, maybe the Sony 35mm f1.8, not too zoomed in, not too wide.

Ok - technically a lot of them. Sony 18-104 G f4, Sigma 16mm f1.4. Just remember when putting on an A7RII the lens will not be utilizing the full sensor and the effective field of view will be 1.5x crop.

I see. Yeah a6000 (even if you find it used) is a great low price option; but with the money saved buying used I’d grab a good lens much like the 18-105mm f4 or something like the sigma 18-50mm f2.8.

I don’t recommend Sigma 30mm f1.4 for Sony A6000. Mine didn’t focus well on my a6000 in low light (some 3rd party lenses don’t have access to phase detect on the a6000?!) and it was heavy in a non-ergonomic way. It was really sharp but people don’t value ergonomics until they realise what they leave on the camera and what they leave at home. I vote 35mm f1.8 . Got one used for $250.
