Songs which I recommend from him are: "White Wedding", "Flesh For Fantasy", "Eyes Without a Face", "Hot in the City", "Catch My Fall", "Mony Mony", "Sweet Sixteen", "Dancing with Myself", "Cradle of Love", "Shock to the System", "Wasteland", "Concrete Kingdom", "Shangri-la". William Broad, aka, Billy Idol! Wow, what an era. He became popular in pop-culture near the end of the punk rock era. The intention was to create his own punk sound with a twist of sassy sweetness…with a sharp raw edge. He created the persona when a teacher graded one of his papers and wrote that he was “idle” on the paper. He thought, no, I’m gonna be an “idol”. What a great era for rock music!

I’m glad you reacted to Billy Idol. So many more songs for you to explore. In the 1980s-1990s there was a group of friends in Western Australia called The 7-11 All Stars. They performed as their idols but lip syncing. My Uncle was Billy Idol. He was the spitting image of him. He used to dress up and a friend would drive him around in a stretch limo with the rear window open a fraction. The girls and even some guys would chase the limo screaming. He performed at my high school in the late 80s. The girls were all drooling. One made a comment and I said that’s my uncle. He looked so much like Billy Idol. The leathers. Spiked blonde hair. The punk look. The curled lip when he was performing. No one believed me until he had finished performing and came backstage and hugged me and said hello. He appeared in our newspaper too. Such a great memory.

Billy is actually quite interesting from a history point of view. He was a part of the Bromley contingent in the 1970s, which was a group of punks who followed the Sex Pistols around (my home town, where Billy was from). He was part of the 70s British Punk group, Generation X but moved to the USA in the 80s to start a solo career. His music has so many influences, ranging for straight up rock to punk and even new wave. His biggest influence though was Elvis Presley, hence the curled lip and the section of this song where he changes his voice to that lower register, almost mimicking Elvis. He even performed a song with Generation X called King rocker, which was about a fantasy fight between Elvis and Muhummed Ali. Billy will be 69 (ooerr) in November, and is still recording music and touring. Saw him a few years ago live, and he is still bloody amazing.

If you like baritones you might also like Peter Murphy, but admittedly he doesn't have the same grit and grunge in his voice that Billy can capture. Rebel Yell was an absolute revelation when it came out and started clearing away all the calcified remains of stale classic rock littering the radio. Billy still had lingering nods to rockabilly and metal but with a hugely welcomed heaping helping of punk. Plus, no one looked this good on stage.

Omg I really miss the 80's . I was in those club's that were jam packed with people and you sweated your butt off. Not to mention drinking.

I remember the first time I heard Billy Idol. I was 13 years old and crossing the country from Washington, DC to LA alone. I picked up a cassette of Billy Idol. I rocked out to White Wedding and the rest of the songs. I will bet I played it 20 times on the way there. That was kind of a surreal experience for a kid of my age at the time. But I made it there and back about 6 months later, once again, alone. Listening to him brings back the memories of that time. I would love if you would do White Wedding sometime.

Billy is one of my favorite artists. He is iconic, talented and arguably one of the best. He fused punk/pop/rock and made classic videos. His collaboration with longtime guitarist, Steve Stevens has been bountiful. They have made numerous classics. Sex, drugs, rock & roll! Billy was the middle finger to the establishment. Straight from his old punk band Generation X, he found a lane that blended it all, plus he was able to utilize video to bring it all together. Billy has often been compared to Elvis with his whiplash smile and low register.

Billy Idol is so unique, incorporating elements from the greats of the past like colors on a palette, ready to paint a mood with. His guitarist Steve Stevens the perfect foil, creating rhythmic chaos around Billy's voice. Senpai, you really HAVE to hear White Wedding, one of the creepy-coolest sister-con songs ever recorded. I also has what I consider Billy's most dangerous-sounding growl. Great reaction to a classic!

Hi Aileen 😊 Awesome awesome reaction to Billy Idol's Rebel Yell😊👍 As fellow KZreadr commented when MTV happened in the early '80s all the artists started thinking of ways to promote themselves through video so you got a lot of theatrical in their music with hair, dress, makeup...it really changed the music industry in the 80s and into the 90s. Billy Idol was a lot... the Vj's would say and here's another one from Billy Idol 😊 Another KZreadr commented about his deep voice sounding like Elvis...yep 😊 Also that curl on the lips... Elvis 😊 All the recommendations for more Billy Idol songs/videos is perfect and I look forward to your reactions to them 😊 Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍
