That Time MTV Made A WEIRD Spider-Man Cartoon

Ойын-сауық

MTV is known for a whole bunch of things, but you can forget that having their own more adult Spider-Man cartoon is on that list. Today we are going to take a look at Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, what it was all about, how it both fit and didn't fit on MTV and what happened to it.

@@nicktechnubyte1184honestly it looked like a one of a kind Spider-Man cartoon, adult oriented with CGI, but MTV decided they’d rather have Jersey Shore than an ahead of it’s time Spider-Man 3D cartoon that would’ve gotten better over time. This show got good ratings too, especially with Neil Patrick Harris’ performance. I wanna know what would’ve happened to that Black Cat like character, she was so good

The craziest Spider-Man cartoon of my childhood was the one where Neil Patrick Harris was Spider-Man. It hit right between two of the more well-known and beloved Spider-Man cartoons, and it was made by MTV so it was almost surreal. Like a fever dream I thought I had.

I am not surprised MTV didn't want Aunt May in the show. At this point the channel was not nearly on the pulse of teen and young adult culture as much as they liked to think they were. This period was not quite at the "Hello fellow kids" but it was getting closer to that at a company level. This was around the start of more desperate "we are still hip and cool, right?" started to come out of MTV's content. But they still had enough awareness to make some stuff land, largely due to show runners knowing how far they could push the limits corporate set down for their shows

I remember having the complete series on a dvd collection... when I was 6... I'm pretty sure that my parents weren't familiar with this show specifically, and only knew Spider-Man was popular with kids so they got me this at a very young age. But they overhead some swear words, realized this wasn't kid friendly, took the dvd set from my room and hit it somewhere (probably where my parents still hide Christmas presents) without telling me until I noticed when I was almost a teen... I didn't even bat an eye at how dark this show was. It was just a distraction that would shut me up at the time.

as someone who truly adored this series when it first came out, i thank you so much for making this video!! personally i think the gruesome reality of this show depicts just how complicated being a superhero would be. you don't just sit around until the next villain comes along, you weigh every decision with the people around you with a certain anxiety of "will my hero life get this person killed" or "will my friend today be my friend tomorrow" and that cuts so deep. harry's loathing of spiderman was so well played out and not just a one-episode and it's resolved sort of thing. the love triangle sparked quite a few debates in school and i think it has something to offer anyone willing to give it a go. just think, there's a 'verse where this show got more than one season XD all the same, double gracias for making this video and get yourself some rest. it can't be easy putting out such stellar content ;) happy fringemas

*SONY really gave this one the Firefly treatment:* Make a mature and interesting sci-fi show with a good cast, air the episodes out of order, then cancel it after a short 13 or 14 episode season. Except, with this, the movie came first, instead of acting as a season finale which confused theater audiences who hadn't seen the show.

I never saw this at around the time when it came out and only heard whispers about it years later when I got older. So when I took the plunge and decided to watch the whole thing I was blown away by how interested I was throughout the entire plot.... And then I was angry by the end because like you can't just end off the show like that by having Peter give up being Spider-Man cold Turkey and not have New York suffered the consequences of everybody hating him. Me and a friend got into a bunch of discussions about like what would happen if villains would take advantage of the fact that spider man isn't protecting New York anymore and now they would actually I don't know maybe think they were wrong about Spider-Man. Then it could lead Peter to most likely go back to being spider man but he can't get his old suit back so then he can make a brand new suit and come back to help save New York. So many things they could have done but now we're left with this disappointing cliff hanger to go right next to the 90s spider man with its cliffhanger and spider man unlimited with its cliff hanger and even Spectacular Spider-Man with its cliff hanger. Regardless this was still a very entertaining and different take on the Spider-Man world that I enjoyed watching and the whole thing with this version of Max with him becoming Electro........DAMN WAS THAT MESSED UP!

I wonder if this show would have been more popular if it was on a different channel like Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon.

I always saw this show as it's own thing, so I enjoyed it as such. I didn't link it to the Raimi spider-verse, and honestly I didn't know that was what was intended at all. To me it was just more Spiderman content to enjoy and that's exactly what I did. But as always Mr. Fringe stunning work and great content

This and Spectacular Spider-Man were taken too soon. But Marvel Spider-Man and Ulimate Spider-Man lasted top long.

Remember watching it live & the order of the episode was confusing. Also, at the time, mtv was showing some anime at the time like Heat Guy J that fit with it.

I had the physical DVD on my PSP which had 3 episodes and I loved it. This show was pretty dark. And had a unique vibe

NGL this version of the Spiderman was very heavy in the feels area . Lots of good ideas. Cliffhanger ends happens often with many other shows at the time. It's a running gag

I know one thing that was a little hard to accept this as a continuation of the Toby movie, was they killed Curt Connors. He turned into the lizard, attacked Spider-Man and then seemingly dies in the first episode! It was awesome but then I was like 'Well, how are they going to continue this moving forward?" Luckily, this did not follow the continuity.

I have the complete series on dvd. I really liked this show for its artwork and for it trying to be different, but I never knew episodes were out of order till now 😂😂

This is probably one the more obscure Spider-Man cartoons (Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends being a close second imo), grew up with it, it's style felt unique, the rendering and lighting of the characters is one of the most memorable aspects of this show that's for certain! but gotta give 'em props, the animation ain't all that bad for what they could've done, most people will likely give it flack for it's looks but nonetheless it some of these stories were pretty entertaining, would recommend! ah yeah, forgot to mention, the Electro episode really stuck with me, one of my absolute favorites from this show.

It's cool that Neil Patrick Harris comes back to voice Spider-man in the Spiderman game, Shattered Dimensions as the OG Spiderman/Classic Spiderman. Not exclusive since all the TV Spiderman VA's got to reprise their roles, but cool Nonetheless.

I watched this show this year. I was trippy seeing a Spiderman show be, well, quite violent, more so then usual. I also found out too late that I was watching these episodes out of order; figured that out when one character who died returned and was acting like nothing happened to him. The animation took some getting used to, but by episode 3, I coped. Honestly, I think the biggest plus for this show was the character Indy, I thought she was really cool and a good romantic choice for Peter. Heck, at times I kinda wanted her and Peter together since he acted quite naturally around her. After watching this show I kinda wanted her to return in other Spiderman properties. Doubt it'll happen, but hey, weirder things have happened. I think the biggest shock about this show is that it ends with Peter quitting being Spiderman. I laughed at that ending because of the finality of it. I knew the show didn't have more episodes and it just made me crack up THAT'S where they were going to end it. Wasn't even mad because this show will hold the title of Spiderman officially quitting being a hero in the end.
