That Time Alex and I Went Road Biking to Key West

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Back in 2017 @The_Sampler and I rode our road bikes to Key West, which is about 200 miles. This sounds like an easy ride, as many people knock out 100 miles or more on a single road ride lasting only a morning, but this was a little different. In this video, I've included the entire trip as well as commentary from Alexander and I. I hope you enjoy it!

I don't know if you'll ever read this, but this video you made years ago was actually an instrumental moment in my biking adventures. Being 16/17 and seeing you guys have an absolute blast on your strung together gear really got me inspired. Your bungie cords and bags set up inspired me to just get out there, regardless of my gear. Bungie cords and dry bags got me out on my first over nighter and since then I have done countless trips including biking from coast to coast in my home country of Canada. Thanks for the content over the years and never taking yourself too seriously. You have been a big inspiration for me and I'm sure countless others. Thanks Seth!

Perhaps out of your budget but a bike ride from Po’ipu to Ke’e beach would be nice with appropriate stops. Since this might not be far enough for you, an alternative would be from Naha to cape Hedo on the island of Okinawa. Once you pass Yomitan it gets nicer and there is a great road stop which is cheap and tasty. The coast has a bike path on and off and provided you don’t ride after a typhoon, it is usually debris-free. I recommend stoping at Manza to refresh in the ocean or any one of a number of resort beaches. These often have jelly-fish nets but there is a fee to swim there. Public beaches are free but I would not get in much above waist depth without a body suit. There is a campground in Motobu just past the Family Mart on hwy 110. They have showers. The office does not have long hours but I have paid in the AM when getting in after dark. I don’t recommend camping in summer due to the heat. There are plenty of pensions that are not too expensive. Nago has some good ones just before you enter the city. While there you can visit Chuarumi aquarium. Plenty of places to eat either on Sesokojima or on Kourijima. Of course they have a nice buffet at the aquarium. Try “Taco Rice” which is not really Mexican, but tasty anyway. I never really carry much water because there are plenty of places to stop and buy a drink. Lawson’s is everywhere. (Like 7-11 only better) After Nago, there are fewer towns unless you pedal inland. I would come back the same way but there is a road on the pacific side too just more with more turns. I would also stay away from Aura Bay because the military is ruining that area.

I've owned a MTB since 2000, and that type of bike was pretty much foreign to everyone everywhere, including the bike shops! You guys were my inspiration and my information station and I'm truly grateful to have been watching you from pretty much the beginning! I did the same trip from Miami to Key West in summer of 2013. It was my first real take at traveling on bike. We did it in two days, logging 125 mi. on the first day and I have never wanted to do that mileage while touring again. It is more important to take it all in inch by inch and enjoy it... much like you guys, I was not thoroughly enjoying myself. It hurt. BUT trips like these exemplify adventure. Adventures you can look back at and be proud of. My experience was also rewarding and it fueled a fire to put together the whole Atlantic East coast in 3 other two week trips in non-consecutive years. Great video.

Thank you for this video! It brought back memories! I organized off-season rides from Santa Barbara to San Diego (210 miles), about the same length as your ride. We were a bunch of fit crit cyclists that wanted some off-the-radar mileage and some fun. I can appreciate the anxiety of making sure everyone's bike was tip top, because 12 riders could equal 12 flats, and we had to make it to the hotels on time for check in! But everyone always had a smile on their face like you guys, that's what cycling is.

No joke, these were my favorite videos. I have watched them many times (the Singletrack Sampler ones, too). They just really captured what it's actually like going on bike tour with modest gear and no touring experience. Sigh. Those were the days. I would *LOVE* to see you guys go on another bike tour!

As a native Floridian, I loved this video! I'm working my way up to more endurance so that I can be able to do something like this soon. The inspiration of throwing on some cheap racks and bungie bags is getting me motivated to just go somewhere one weekend and see how it turns out. Thanks for sharing your old adventure!
