In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

I said it in the post game interview, but I'll say it one more time: CTWC was the best three days of my life so far. The joy of meeting so many people and having so much fun with everyone playing a 30-year-old block game that we all love for some reason can't be stated in words. Thank you everyone ❤❤❤ Love you all

also since I didn't get a chance to shill myself in the post game interviews: I stream at twitch.tv/ericicx, and I'll be trying to stream at least once a week at 7:30 PM eastern time, either on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday, depending on my college workload. Might not be able to use a mic depending on the circumstances, but it'll still be fun either way. Hope to see you there! ❤

Dude! Congratulations for 2nd place!! After that first game I knew one thing: I would kinda feel sorry for whoever gets silver here because both of you totally deserve the title! After one more game I actually wanted *you* to win because of the superior stacking you were consistently showing. Also the way you got out of bad situations in "kill"screen was just mind blowing and super entertaining to watch. Must have been exhausting! Congrats again and thanks for the show :)

When the second position is a jaw dropping performance, 10 out of 10 out of space... Man, what a final match up is was ! I'm following the CTWC since the Boom Tetris for Jeff! era. Never thought the evolution of that esport would be that spectacular!

The longer the event the longer it is for the community to bond and have fun and enjoy it. I'd definitely vote for longer breaks between games to let the players rest more both physically and mentally. And throw in a halftime show... just kidding on the last part... or am I⁉⁉⁉😁😜(no seriously, I'm joking.) Great game guys and see ya'll crazy fans next year! Take care! 💚

Guys, I definitely want you to know that you're much bigger than you think! Every year since Jonas vs Joseph we watch your championship in Russian translation (it's a bit funny commenting but we are serious as hell knowing all about hypertapping, rolling and maxing out!!) but with millions of views! It's so great to see how Tetris championship grows bigger with every year. Eric and Fractal, great job! Big thanks to everyone who contributed organizing it!

I will never forget this weekend as long as I live. This was such a great time and meeting everyone this year was beyond a blessing. This community has done so much for me and many others, and despite us seeing some of the best Tetris to ever be played, the most memorable part of ctwc for me will always be seeing and talking to everyone in person after years of only talking through discord. Can’t wait for next year!

This is amazing to watch. The top 2 keep pushing the bar higher and higher each year. KZread's algorithm first recommended a CTWC video to me in 2016, I watched it and was hooked. Who can forget the Boom Tetris for Jeff era, Jonas racking up championship after championship, and then Joseph coming on scene with two titles of his own and ushering in a wave of new talent. This tournament is awesome to watch every year and I hope to attend and meet some of the competitors in person in 2023.

By far this tournament has the best energy I've seen. The crowd getting pumped, the players and commentators joking and laughing. It's such a positive and fun energy that makes this really fun to watch.

Loved this year’s tournament every year I get my mind blown from the skill level being blown up, it’s really a double edged sword to see the ctwc continue to boom in popularity / get the recognition it deserves…. But if I’m being honest I miss seeing quaid and harry and buco and Jeff and especially Jonas (RIP), all the players that I watched year after year for so long are just a CTWC memory. I’m glad they live on as legends

I think next year CTWC might as well make 2 or 3 divisions for Rollers, Hypertappers and DAS in order to preserve the "Classic" Tetris. So that players who enjoys playing it without having to practice a specific technique but being a good construction worker. And also, If there is no change in the game, every championships will become endurance battle. That is just pure headache for players.

Unbelievable... is what I would say if I hadn't watched all the CTMs in the last couple of years. Honetly though, the level these guys have achieved in this game is beyond unbelievable! Can't wait to see what comes next. Eric was like a machine, reminded me of Stackrabbit, just wouldn't top out no matter what sequence of pieces, what misdrops... just a machine. How anyone can maintain that level of play both physically and mentally for so long is beyond me! Exceptional tournament!
