Testosterone from Exercise Fuels Prostate Cancer During ADT?

Exercise, foods, and other lifestyle changes can increase testosterone. If you are on testosterone suppression therapy (ADT), will the increase of testosterone from exercise compromise your therapy and cause your prostate cancer to grow?

    Georgios is the real deal. I’m 80, live in the UK and have metastatic cancer in the spine and pelvis. Working with Georgios on gym and nutrition following treatment has circumvented the usual symptoms of “menopause”: all I have is the going hot then cold sensation. No fatigue. As he says in this video, my 4 days/wk weights and 2 days/wk cardio have not increased my blood test Testosterone at all. I’m still living an active life.

    You ALWAYS give me so much hope with your common sense advice. I just finished my Lutetium treatment (6 doses) and continue with ADT's: Nubeqa and Orgovyx. For me, resistance exercises in the morning and late in the evening (often straight before sleep) definitely counter the typical side effects. My PSA in 9 months has dropped from 525 to below 1.0 and still sexually active and maintaining muscle mass, etc. Definitely aiming for a break from ADT's some time this year, and my Doc has discussed emerging studies proving benefits of a "hormonal holiday." As a fellow Aussie (but US-based), loving your wisdom.

    Thanks so much for your kind words and for sharing your journey! It's truly inspiring to hear how you've taken the reins on your health mate! Your dedication to resistance exercises and the incredible results you've seen with your PSA levels are a testament to your strength and determination. It sounds like you're not just fighting the good fight; you're winning it! Remember, every rep you do is like a punch against those side effects, and it seems you're quite the boxer. Keep up the fantastic work, and here's to looking forward to that well-earned 'hormonal holiday'!

    @@ExerciseElixirPCa Thanks Georgios. I have a very good Oncologist who doesn't dictate to me. He offers suggestions and even embraces many of mine as I have been reading papers and studying outcomes for a long time now. The fight is constant, but I am getting results. As of today, PSA now down to .7 from my high of 525 in April this year ('23). I had cancer in seven places (no major organs) and a large chunk of it has gone or is going away. I need to maintain my diet and exercise regime and I'm happy to do that. I've never actually been fitter with healthy/'normal' scores in a lot of super-important areas such as Alk Phos, B12, Sodium, Potassium, Protein, Chloride, Electrolyte Balance, Glucose, Calcium, AST, ALT, Bilirubin, CPK-C, Magnesium, etc. Thank you for the inspiration. Let's all keep punching.

    That was what I needed to hear. I’ve been on hormone therapy for a while waiting to drop psa to start radio therapy. I have been maintaining weights. Although they have dropped mainly 5x5 on bench hex deadlift and chin ups My mind is now at rest as I had a nagging doubt that I was keeping psa levels high by doing weights. On the hot flushes. I find if I have refined cards ie bread the hot flushes are very hot as opposed to meat and vegetables which give a gentle hot flush thank you for giving the results of that 20 week study

    Super info. I'm waiting for the next video in the series. Having done prostatectomy 2016@51 years old with a gleason 9, positive margins there was some left behind and began to rise rapidly. after 36 doses of salvage radiation and 2 years hormone therapy it was in remission for approximately 4 years and has recently started rising again. During those 4 years i had been very good at doing whole food plant based diet though i had lost too much weight i started eating fats oils/animal based foods again and the beast came back. It is still low psa though rising rapidly. Having gone back to whole food plant based I have upped the game and switched to raw veg diet with very little oils other than omega 3's which i get only from chia seeds the majority of nutrition is from smoothies which are primarily kale and cabbage along with carrots and beets as juices. Also I have started significant weight bearing exercises and am curious about the next video as it concerns my situation as i am not on any treatments. Psa test upcoming in a month...

    I like this channel, you're informative, even though you could say more in less time, but.. people are different. My story is, 54 years of age, detected my cancer at PSA27, Gleason score 9 with local spread to lymphs, but not bones. I am currently undergoing ADT for 2 years (started august last year, so 8-9 months ago) and also did radiation therapy for 29 times in Late October. I am fairly obese, and I tried to start exercising very carefully, walking on a flat treadmill for 30 minutes twice a week, but it took so much strength from me that I had to stop. Would love to hear you speak about prostate cancer in terms of obesity and perhaps how to keep the motivation to exercise up.

    I have a biochemical recurrence two years after surgery. I went on ADT in November of 2023 and scheduled for salvage Radiotherapy in late January. I'm scheduled for 33 RT sessions and 6 months of the ADT. My last PSA before ADT was .29 Funny, becuase it .3 two months pervious to that. So it went down a tiny bit. I'm optimistic about my chances for a full cure. I think I held my PSA steady for two months prior to ADT by diet and exercise. I'm working very hard at it, hiking (lots of hills), swimming hard, weights and Yoga. My question is, how intense di I need to lift weights with all the rest of what I am doing? I don't wnat to over-do it. Just wondering. So far the ADT hasn't been too bad. I'm not feeling much difference in my body other than a few hot flashes. Love you videos --- Keep it up -- Please

    you don't really think there's even 1 person in the world who knows if you should be lifting 25kg or 100kg, right? I wish you luck of course, I'd say go as hard as you can! Did your RT treatment come with cost/benefit analysis, as in what the provider thinks might cure, prolong, or otherwise damage your body?

    Hi Paul, happy new year! Thanks so much for sharing your journey and for your kind words! It sounds like you're really taking charge of your health with an impressive mix of hiking, swimming, weights, and yoga - that's fantastic! Regarding weightlifting intensity, think of it like seasoning a meal; enough to enhance the flavor but not so much that it overwhelms. You want to challenge your muscles but listen to your body. In general, using machines and isolating one group at a time, you can have a pace of 2 seconds lifting and 3 seconds lowering the weight, and safely reach 1-2 repetitions away from failure (i.e. not being able to lift the weight any longer) to stimulate muscle growth and strength. If you're feeling strong and energetic, maybe add a little extra weight or a few more reps. On days you're feeling less perky, it's okay to take it easier. Balancing all the activities you're doing is like being a conductor of an orchestra, making sure every section plays in harmony. Keep up the great work, and remember, your optimism and dedication are your superpowers!

    My question is : If you have low grade prostate cancer (Gleason 6) and are not undergoing treatment but are on active surveillance can you take a natural herb like Ashwadangha? This herb is primarily used to lower stress by reducing cortisol levels; However it also increases testosterone levels in men. Is it safe to keep using this herb if you are not on any active treatment for prostate cancer? If it's ok and encouraged to do weight training and high intensity exercises for men with low grade prostate cancer which will naturally increase testosterone levels is it therefore safe to use Ashwadangha which will also increase natural testosterone levels?

  • @ExerciseElixirPCa

    @ExerciseElixirPCa

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi Dominic, happy new year and thanks for your insightful question! I cannot give you an answer as this would be basically medical advice, but I can tell you what I would personally do, which is not advice to what you should do. I sometimes take Ashwagandha but I would not take it in a regular basis as a common side-effect which I experiences is anhedonia. So I use it more like a per-need basis. Having said that, I would not worry too much (personally) about fueling prostate cancer, and I might cover this in the video I'll make about testosterone increases from sex, exercise, and certain foods while you're not actively suppressing testosterone. Make sure your medical professionals know about your supplements but I don't think they'll tell you to stop them. Just to give you a very simple answer which might be wrong to simplify as much, or we might discover new things in the next few years and what I say might be wrong then. If you are suppressing testosterone then prostate cancer has almost none to go by so it slows down. But if you;re not suppressing testosterone, then prostate cancer will get as much as it needs and not the rest. So if you increase your testosterone levels naturally (which actually will not be an increase from your natural levels, you had your levels lower and you just getting them closer to their actual natural levels with exercise, etc) then the prostate cancer will again get what it needs and leave the rest, so you're not necessarily increasing the rate of prostate cancer growth with more testosterone past your previous unsuppressed levels. I hope that makes a bit of sense, again take this with a grain of salt because the best answer is we still don't fully know and more knowledge keeps coming out.

    My objection is not specific to this channel, but isn't it hypocritical to say "follow your doctor's advice", when we all know we're here in order NOT to follow our doctor? Unfortunately we're not getting a lot of truths and trash-talking about doctors, they all seem to acquire some magical properties after attaching to our diseases as consultants and caregivers, but deep inside we all know 90% at least of them are crap, at least in the research sense. There's no way the average doctor goes through 10 studies every week and tries to finetune their treatment philosophies, or cross-reference and match study groups with their own patient medical records, to deliver superior healthcare.

    Thank you for bringing up such an important point! It's really crucial to have open discussions about healthcare and the trust we place in our doctors. I totally get where you're coming from, however a medical professional has had time with you and your case, and have at least SOME expertise and experience. There are always negative experiences though, and I've had many. I'm working with men who choose to do all their therapies that their medical professional has prescribed, and others who choose to not do anything medical - I don't judge, I'm here to support everyone and their personal choices. I encourage everyone to be well-informed and proactive about their health, which includes understanding different perspectives and options, and seeking a second opinion by someone who specializes in their health issue. Doctors bring valuable expertise and experience, but it's also important for each of us to stay informed and ask questions.
