Testing sleep quality

Ғылым және технология

Lots of people are affected by poor quality sleep, but what do we mean by that and what is the right test? This video addresses the broad range of options available. As always, happy to take general questions relevant to this topic, but I won't be able to answer specific questions for individuals.

Loving your videos doc. I've had bad sleep since birth and have had chronic insomnia for almost 20 years now, and am now dealing with a host of health issues that's leaving every GP Ive seen scratching their heads for years now. I'm currently dealing with extreme chronic fatigue / cardio issues / awaking with zero restoration. Its awful. I've finally been to see NHS neurology, I've just had an overnight sp02 and part of that was having me answer the epworth questionnaire. Personally I just want to say that as a chronic insomniac; the Epworth questions shouldn't be used to define, someone who has chronic insomnia, 'sleepiness'. In someone who has chronic insomnia, 'sleepiness' and 'the ability to doze' are completely detached from one another. I could be awake for 48 hours with zero sleep, sleep deprived, on the worlds comfiest bed, absolutely shattered, and I will STILL struggle to fall asleep. Yet according to the epworth scale, if I answer the question truthfully 'how likely am I to doze off on the sofa watching TV' and I answer 0, for 'I wont', the epworth scale would define me as not "sleepy". That makes no sense to me. I can assure you I'd still be the most drowsy person in a 10 mile range. It sounds odd, I know, as 'sleepiness' and the 'ability to fall asleep' are the same thing for 99% of the population, but for the 1% of us chronic insomniacs, they are not the same thing. Also, are you available to do private consultation ? If not, recommendations on how and where to get PSN done privately (or NHS, although thats proving hard to find according to my GP) Thanks

Can PSQI be used to categorize sleep disorders?

Hi Martin, that's an interesting question and it's not really geared for that. It's more helpful in terms of quantifying the impact of a sleep disorder and then tracking responses to an intervention. Bw Simon

@@DrSimonFreilich thank you sir. So apart from telling if a sleep quality is good or poor , can it be modified further?

Thanks, that's a really important topic that I haven't addressed and needs far more than just a one line response. For those in the self help stages, I'd suggest a chat with your local gp/family doctor. For those that have been and still having problems, would suggest that they seek more specialist help depending on the underlying circumstances which can be very varied. Bw Simon
