TESTING CERAKOTE WITH AN AIRBRUSH! - IS THIS THE PERFECT COATING?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ever since I touched the BMW R60/5 cast aluminum parts, I knew I had to coat them with a product in order to protect them from debris and chemicals. I was looking into plating, anodizing and many paint coatings, but most companies didn't recommend their products for my specific application.
The engine is probably one of the most important aspects of this motorcycle restoration and I want it to stand out. After searching online for a specific coating I landed on Cerakote's website.
I've heard of them before, but I never had the need to opt for their product. After communicating via email about their products, I was advised to use their C-Series Cerakote. This is an air-cure product and it offers great durability, but it also allows heat dissipation which is perfect for the 600cc air-cooled BMW engine!
With all that information it was still up to me to choose the color and I must say: IT WAS NOT EASY! I was deciding between "Satin Nickel" and "Glacier Silver".
In the end, I chose Glacier Silver as it looked like the closest match to the brand-new aftermarket valve cover from EuroMotoElectrics.
After ordering my first pint of Cerakote I decided to walk you through a quick step-by-step video. Not only is this my first time using Cerakote, but it's also my first time using an airbrush! You'll probably be able to tell in the video...
If this video was helpful in any way, I'd appreciate it if you hit that like button and be sure to subscribe!

    I''m glad you had a good result. I apply Cerakote professionally and have only 2 things to say. Your blast media may work if you want that rough texture but glass is not recommended. Second do not use Nitrile gloves with acetone, use latex as acetone leaches through nitrile gloves. Cool video & informative. Nice job overall. 🙂

    Hi Warren, thanks for leaving this comment. Not only will this help me improve my Cerakote application skills, but hopefully others will read this and find value too! I've read everywhere that glass shouldn't be used, but I believe they are referring to glass-bead. The main difference between glass bead and crushed glass (what I used) is the profile of the media. Here is a media chart guide I found, which has been really helpful to me: midvaleindustries.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Media-Use-Guide-01.png The surface finish I have with the crushed glass is probably even too rough, as I used 30-60 grit. What media and grit do you opt for on aluminum parts? Thank you for recommending latex gloves while using acetone. I will indeed pick up a box specifically while cleaning my parts. I am still learning a lot when it comes to applying Ceraktoe and I love C-Series Air-Cure product. Maybe in the future I can find or make a small oven to apply some of their other products. What series of Cerakote do you like the most? Thanks again for your comment!! Regards Andreas

    Is Cerakote only for metal? I was curious if I can airbrush it on a bathroom sink as I may use the white touch up paint for porcelain? I water sanded it already I’ll be blending it in not entire sink mainly a practice run replacing later but if it works I’ll be happy .

    I fully agree with you! This coating is very unique the way it lays down and it's unlike any other paint: very thin (almost watery), but it does not run and it covers VERY well. Thank for your feedback, it's much appreciated! I'm really digging deep into this restoration project and I hope the outcome will portrait the work I put into it. Thanks David. Cheers

    Cerakote is extremely popular in the firearms/shooting community. One of the great things about Cerakote is that it goes on and cures thin so you can use it in allot of tight tolerance firearm applications where other products would be unacceptable!

    Yes, I fully agree with you. Cerakote is a great option when it comes to firearm coatings. Not only is it wear resistant, but it is also very heat resistant. I will be definitely using their products more often and I cannot wait to coat more parts. Thanks for sharing your comment. Regards Andreas

    I have some repop valve covers pretty sure the actual metal is far from 1972 fresh colour or tone. Great job! Guys coat their exhausts with ceramic for performance too. Adjusting needle back on airbrush can get greater cover than extended trigger.

  • @WorkshopRebuild

    I agree with your statement about the metal and color difference! After 50 years of being on the road it would be very hard to match any color, yet any NOS part would have a different color tone as well...so I tried my best to color match the color to the Siebenrock valve colors. Thanks a lot! There are many applications for ceramic coatings and I have a feeling this won't be the last time I'm going to use it! Thank you for your advice on the airbrush. I had it set about half way, but I could always allow the needle to retract a little bit more. In an upcoming video I'll be using the airbrush to get into all the hard-to-reach areas and a small spray gun with a 0.8mm tip to cover the larger areas. Regards Andreas

    You will like Cobalt for slightly darker gray. Glass bead is better than other media that people recommend. Electric airbrush doesn’t work well for cerakote. SCFM is not high enough to make it work well. Main reason why buying even a small compressor is not worth it.

  • @adamreiten2554
    @adamreiten2554Ай бұрын

    How big of an air compressor do you recommend for the sand blasting and airbrush application?

  • @WorkshopRebuild

    @WorkshopRebuild

    25 күн бұрын

    I would recommend anything larger than 3HP for sandblasting to be honest. A small compressor might not be able to keep up. Even a small compressor, with a large tank could be an option. For an airbrush, you can run a small portable compressor as they don;t use much air.

    Hi there! So far the coating has been amazing. I have not put the engine to use yet (because I am still waiting for parts), but the coating looks REALLY good. I also tested this coating by pouring acetone over it after it was fully cured, and it didn't harm the coating at all! This means it surely is chemical resistant. I will have more videos on Cerakote if that's something you're interest in watching. If you have any questions about this topic I might be able to answer them in a video. Thanks for your comment! Reading the comments you mention you don't have an oven. Allen Millyard, an motorcycle engineer in the UK uses a bbq in his garden to dry his parts on. Probably a gas bbq but definitely not wood or charcoal.

  • @WorkshopRebuild

    @WorkshopRebuild

    Жыл бұрын

    That is correct! Cerakote offers different coatings that must be oven-cured and since I don‘t have an adequate oven, I chose their „Air-Cure Series“. I have seen a few videos from Allen and he does amazing work within a small workshop. I believe a gas bbq would work just fine for smaller parts, like this cover, brake levers and other miscellaneous parts. Since I will coat the engine block, cylinders, heads and what not, this would require a much bigger space. Especially if I want to get everything done in one shot. I believe I could use an oven or like you mentioned a gas powered bbq in the future for heating up parts like bushings and bearing or even to allow parts to flash from being cleaned. Thank you for your tip and I‘ll take this into consideration😃👍🏽

  • @WorkshopRebuild

    @WorkshopRebuild

    Жыл бұрын

    For a less textured surface this is not a good option. Cerakote recommends blasting parts before applying their product, even though their product chemically bonds with metals! There are often times you CANNOT blast parts, because you will damage the surface finish. I would suggest you give cold or hot bluing a try. This will give you a very nice finish and maybe even the color you want to achieve! I hope this helps😃👍🏽

    If you blast it with 120 grit aluminum oxide you'll get a nice finish on a blade. It's very consistent. If you can't get 120 grit you can use 100. Profile is critical to longevity, not just the finish.

    Hi Alvin, thank for letting me know this about gasket surfaces. I have great trust in their product, but not enough for gasket surfaces. Could i use a smaller cheap electric airbrush gun?

  • @WorkshopRebuild

    @WorkshopRebuild

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there! I have never used an electric airbrush before, but if there isn't a difference in output performance, then I don't see why not. If you find a suitable electric airbrush, make sure it has a minimum nozzle size of 0.5mm. Anything under that and you might run into atomization issues for the Cerakote. The one in this video is a really affordable airbrush and can be found in the video description. Let me know if it works out for you. Regards Andreas
