Cerakote How-To
Just a quick video to show you guys and gals how It is that I prep and paint my firearms using the Cerakote C paint from Brownells. In the video I go into detail about how I prep the metal surface of a gun all the settings on my compressor and some tips and tricks to help you achieve a great looking finish in the comfort of your own house.

Just a tip from an old painter, next time you have to wrap a barrel wrap it sticky side out, just as easy to put on but 100% easier to take off.

nice tip : )
Considering that this was done several years ago, I'd be interested in knowing how well that finish has held up.
This video is five minutes and fifty six second long, I appreciate that
great video man. thanks for including the details about the airbrush, and proper pressure on the compressor. that helped a lot
Excellent video mate. Taking your time to explain the process really helps us viewers. Nice job too.
Great hands on video. There's a lot of prep involved in the process that I've overlooked.
Love the music! Nice how to vid as well.
Nice video. Good track from Blackhawk Down playing in the background too.

Thanks. I just watched the movie after the reference u made. Its a war classic.
This music is radicalizing my cats
I agree, infact I bought the next bottle up for two lowers to be air dried and the 4 oz for two lowers to be oven dried, it was too much on the big one, but I'll find a use in the year.
Excellent video!
@Sanjuro82 I hear you brother. If I could afford it I would buy a blasting cabinet in a hart beat but fund are low and I have gotten really good results using this method. Luckily I have been very lucky with Cerakote and it has given me good results and the paint is holding up to normal use. As far as the Respirator goes your 100 percent right. I will most certainly buy me a respirator cause paint can be lethal and can have very bad long lasting harm on your body. Thanks for watching.
Nice video. Thanks for the tips
Beautiful job. Looks really good.
Nice touch with the Black Hawk Down Hans Zimmer music
Nice video Man! Short and sweet..
Good video and Good Movie!!😍💪🏽 "Black hawk Down "🤣
@alajeff Thanks. It does the stock that folds over the receiver. It has held up pretty good for me so far. I have a glock that has had the coat on it for about 2 months and the mossberg 930 spx has been painted for about 1 month and so far they are holding better than the original parkerized finish that the 930 came on originally.
Nice job , I watched a vid on how to make kydexholster holsters . The ones I make are bad ass and there at the right price ,free for me . Nice work
I'm going to have to do this to my gun! Looks great, thanks for the vid!
@wetdog223 yes. wait for it to cure some and sand the affected area and re prep and paint again. It actually happen to me while doing this very same gun. i had a ugly run on the receiver i had to take care off and it turned out great.
Blackhawk Down soundtrack. Nice! :)

I'm glad you put that, it was beginning to do my head in, because I couldn't remember which film I had heard it in.
I'm still in the practice face of practice makes perfect. I'm about to invest in a blasting cabinet and a proper paint gun and compressor for the job. I might be doing it professionally for a profit in a few months time. good luck with yours and if you ever do any rifles or handguns do share it with me.
@aceshigh81686 I don't see a problem to using the disposable pray guns from Preval. They seem to work well when applying duracoat. And for the sanding I used 180 grit on direct metal and but I wouldn't use brake cleaner. It leaves a residue and creates just a mess. Go to your local walmart and for line 6 bucks you can buy enough acetone to get the job done. If you do go the preval route let me know how it turned out for you. Thanks.
I bought the 4oz in the od green and it was enough for two shotguns and one pistol frame. so I would say it should be enough but keep in mind you will love how easy it applies and might want to do more than just a scope. Just saying
Love the work area Leo, haha nice vid
@IndiaEight5 In my experience yes. Mush durable. If you can check my favorites video playlist for a full test of cerakote vs others
Very nice job!
"Wear a mask" next scene spraying with no mask...
Awesome video, thank you!
Ta buenísimo el video; gracias!
Nice video bro... Te quedo a fuego, se ve facil de hacer...
@wetdog223 No need to bake or sand blast but if you can sand blast its highly recomended.
This gun design does not allow you to remove the magazine spring and follower unless you remove the magazine from the receiver. Also it has a brass looking follower which would give the impression that the gun was still loaded.
Is they reciever aluminum? If so did the cerakote hold up on the aluminum receiver? Most coatings other then maybe a powder coat won't adhere well to aluminum.
Nice how-to bro, thanks for sharring. I have an Ithica 12 gauge I would like to cerakote.....it has the engraving on the reciever. Do you think if I spray it with cerakote, I would loose the engraving?
Good video. Is there a shell in the tube? See some brass there not good if it is
@PracticalFirearms
Ай бұрын
There should be no shells at all, I double checked. And I don’t remember Tristar using a fancy brass follower.
Would a dremel tool with a sanding wheel work for ruffing up the surface so the paint will adhere?
nice job and color way
@101ABN327 Actually the camera didn't really capture the real color of the gun on the final footage. I just did my Steven 350 pump and will upload a video of it in the same FDE and try to make the camera show the color as true as it can. For some reason under direct light the camera adjusted its color ballance and made it look like Desert Tan on the last footage on the video but actually it looks just as it did on the footage that where i'm spraying the barrel. Just like it.
It came out nice
how is the paint holding up? i just did mine with burnt bronze, seems like it's easy to get little scratches on it.
Well done!
Looks Great !
How is the durability of the C series?
i did not know i could use air brush to do the cerakote,i have a iwata HP-CH for my hobbies but i thought i need a bigger one for cerakote,so i bought a spary gun,iwata LPH80
Do you think the 4oz bottle is enough to cover a riffle scope? It's either 3-9x40 or a 4-12 power
@USMCSC0UTSniper The cerakote that I use is a ceramic based high temperature paint so it can stand up to the temperature of the barrels without loosing its color or chipping away. It does cost more money than durakote but its just as simple to apply if not easier and the final product looks so much better. Durakote is good bust to me cerakote c is a much better product.
why aren't you using sandblasting for the surface prep? Did I miss it? I have had my best results and control with the air brush also. Anything larger and you get sags and problems.
nicely done, thank you
Very Nice thanks for the video, I'm gonna try that on some knives...My Best
Beautiful!! 👍🏽
That FDE looks kinda beige...
very cool vid. I really enjoyed this, even have some of the tools already to try this. BTW is the music off Black Hawk Down? End result is impressive. I though it needed to be baked in the oven
you did a nice job with your project. Do you have an opinion of the strength of the coatings you did versus the baked on finish?
@aceshigh81686 I don't feel comfortable doing the barrel since it will be under constant friction with the slide but if you sand the stainless steel on the slide well enough the paint should adhere and last just like any other metal. Cerakote is good but its not a magical finish that won't wear with time. I pm you a link to a wear test done by a 1911 user on his wilson combat after cerakoting.
I might be mistaken but the music sounds like it is from the movie Black Hawk Down.
@MrMatt5252 if you think it wont scuff the metal too much then I dont see why not.
good job . hey what extetion tube is that ? could you write the brand ?
Your shotgun was parkerized? Why did you sand that off? Are you supposed to? I just duracoated my parkerized kel tec pf9 and the parkerization is a preferred underlayer for the duracoat to set it. Practically absorbs it.
I know this video is old, but how many coats did you have to do? That's a nice color combination
Do u have to clear coat over it ?? It looks go
Filter is not working due to being close to compressor the moisture laden air has not condensed because it's still hot
How much cerakote did you use for this? was the 4 oz smallest package enough?
Is it better than duracote?
How many ounces of cerakote do I need for an AR15?
How is the HF air compressor holding up ?
Does heating it in an oven help cure it? How to you think this would do on a knife blade and then sharpened afterwards to remove cerakote from the edge?
@Sms8668
5 жыл бұрын
Mr. TopRamen Actually you should heated in the oven at 250 degrees for 2 hrs or 1 hr at 300 degrees.
Where do you purchase your Cerakote from? I am debating on whether to have a shop Cerakote the Frame and Slide that has been stripped of the parts for $100. Or I can buy a Cerakote and do myself.
Is the tri star just like an 870?
Badass! Due to The wind in the background at the end of the video, I did not hear what you said about waiting one week. Did you say you have to wait a week for it to cure? Thanks for the help, and a great how to video! Can't wait to try this myself . Cheers
@PracticalFirearms
8 жыл бұрын
+Sig Guy 24 hours before you try to reassemble and one week to fully cure at least I remember those were the rules but I have assemble and shot cerakoted guns after waiting only 24 hours.
Nice video. I have an older shotgun I want to try this with. What kind of paint are you using? Do you know how to paint patterns?
LOL ! Good catch Shayna.
My buddy had his Ar cerakoted. When they did it, they had to bake the finish onto the gun. How long will your finish last on your gun before it will need to be redone?
@yourskippy
7 жыл бұрын
Matt Weber your buddy had the H-Series that requires an oven cure. This is the C-Series air dry for "high temp" applications
how many coats you do
How has the finish held up?
Should of polished that to Chrome after it was sanded down. Great Job.
Is Ceracote stronger than Duracoat?
This is the air dry Cerakote not the Bake on one. It does not require baking and cures in 24hrs and its supper easy to paint with cause it does not need mixing. just pour and spray
What size nozzle? Just one coat?
@joeforza
Жыл бұрын
Air cure can only get one coat down. Thick applications it will run and you can’t fix it without blasting and starting again.
is that black hawk down intro theme?
Question: How is your air compressor holding on? I am planning on buying the same one. I just want an air compressor to do what i want it to do and that's is to inflate my tires and cerakote all my firearms. Do you think i should get a bigger one and how many hp is that one?
@PracticalFirearms
10 жыл бұрын
Being 100 percent honest i can tell u its didn't hold up too good even at cerakoting. I replaced it with one of the entry level units that have a reserve tank and it cost me about the same as this one cause I got it at a pawn shop. This new one airs my bike and car tires just fine and I'm 100 percent sure it handle the cerakoting much better since it also has an adjustable pressure valve. Thanks. For a few guns or maybe even a small hobby this one fits the bill, but for more than a few guns and specially filling up tires and stuff not so much.

You should do and update of what type of system you are running sou you could help out people like me from not buying the wrong stuff. I was so close of buying every identical piece that you have . Btw your shotgun looks nice

Like I said if your only going to do a few guns its defenitely worth for the price to do it the way I had it set up. The only reason why I went up with a bigger compressor and air gun is cause i'm planning on starting a small business painting firearms and for the volume i would be doing the small compressor would not work like I needed it to.
Se ve guapo chico. Bien hecho!
Nice video. But man you've got to get yourself a blast cabinet. Or at least use K-Phos before paint. Oh and wear a respirator! These high end paint do not break down in your lungs. You might think they are harmless, but even a little bit can be harmful. Good video though! And nice Tri-Star.
That's nice, came out looking great, is it holding up good ?
@PracticalFirearms

the air dry holds good to normal use of the gun. It does not hold up great if your keep hitting the surface or scratching it on a regular basis for example if your taking a tactical class that requires you drag yourself and your gun through the dirt or through gravel and such. The bake on is definitely the best way to do it. The air dry requires way less skill to get a good looking product that will satisfy most.
Hey Leo, Wow, that came out mint man. I'm in Plantation. Is your company on the web? I have a HK lower SF housing that needs to be done and I figure, you have everything; why not ask, Thanks!
What is the music called? Thanks
Cool. Just checkin :)
Minute 4:03, Did you forget to unload your tube of ammo before you stripped your shotgun?
Has anyone tried ceramic header paint from the auto parts stores? I heard it is basically the same thing and it is cheaper!
I've seen people preheat the item before spraying, is there any purpose in this?

ScoopDogg1867 pre heating is. called "Gas-Out" it is an important stage in Cerakote Prep. Gas Out forces any remaining oils out of the metal or to the surface. many firearm oils impregnate themselves into metal and materials and simply sanding or even wiping with solvents won't remove all of them. it's important to soak your parts in Acetone (industrial, not nail salon) or brake parts cleaner for a few hours prior to spraying. after soaking you wipe them down and Gas them out, checking to see if any oil has come out. if so soak again and repeat until your parts have no oil showing and take on a dry, white-grey appearance. At that point they are ready to be racked and sprayed.

Just to add on, I would recommend that you allow the part to cool completely before spraying on Cerakote. The coating has a solvent in it that evaporates as it dries. If the surface is hot, you'll sometimes get shiny spots from the solvent flash drying on the surface. With H series, you need to air cure the item for about 15 minutes before putting it in the oven.
Where did you buy your cerakote c-series from? I can't seem to find it anywhere except on Brownells. Com

Kaptain Kash cerakote website sells it directly. I am a Cerakote Applicator and professional painter and I get all my colors directly from cerakote.
nice blackhawk down song
If it was parkerized, you didnt have to sand it. Just degrease real good. The park is rough enough for the paint to adhere to.
@nate9442001 Hey nate. Its funny cause since you and I talked about running paint the two guns I did after that had paint runs I had to fix. Simple fix tho. I'll be looking forward to the pics of how it turned out and I will post a pic a 1911 I did.
Good
I think you should have mentioned in the video about the cost to do this. In case you are planning on doing this yourself; it is around a 1000 dollar investment in tools you need alone. It only makes sense if your doing this for more than 5 firearms. My local gun shop does it properly for around 200 dollars. They also take on the liability which is very important when to comes to cerakote.
@jerestolp02

it's nowhere near that much. u can get a good little compressor for 100-150 a decent gun for 30-50 then cerakote kit for 1 color for 45. it could get more expensive if u but a blasting setup.

Using sandpaper will not give you the correct surface prep. The reason you sand blast is so that the surface is etched. The Cerakote then levels into the surface for correct bonding. There are places that will sand blast for you for a small fee. We do it in our shop for DIYers on occasion. Overall, this project turned out nice, but I'd be interested in knowing if he had any bonding issues with the sandpaper prep.
Nice job, but the final color is definitely not Flat Dark Earth. This job came out WAY too light! It lighter than desert tan. I've seen others complain about how Cerakote FDE turns out. 101
@zaldivarbigboy Thanks man.
