*TESTED* Is the all-new Lexus RZ 450e the Luxury EV we've been waiting for?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#rz450e
The first electrified #lexus was back in 2004 as the RX400h. Fast forward nearly two decades and Lexus is finally rolling out their first battery electric vehicle, the RZ450e. Is this the ultimate Lexus we've been waiting for!?

I think you're right, a lot of us either work from home or have hybrid schedules. So the 'let's play the efficiency game' may not be as prevalent with most RZ owners. I am so glad the throttle response is this good! Like Chris, when I saw the BZ's numbers my reaction was not very positive, mainly because I knew there would be a Lexus variant. I'm stoked to see more, thanks for posting Kirk!

I think this car will definitely appeal to Toyota/Lexus loyalists in much the same way the Cadillac Lyriq appeals to Caddy/GM fans. But for those not already in the club, the spec sheet will make it a tough sell I suspect. Which is fine because they aren't planning to produce very many of them. I'm sure they'll have no problem selling everything that comes off the line.

Where I live (mid-Atlantic coast) I'm seeing a range hit of ~25% during the coldest periods, and the couple times I used public DCFC the output was ~50-60% of nominal. (I only very rarely charge away from home, and my car doesn't do a very good job of preconditioning.) My comment was more a reminder to the audience to keep these factors in mind than it was a criticism of your content.

It's stunning no lie at all but I just hope Lexus knows what they are doing. I really want to switch to EV after my UX hybrid. The NX plug-in did not catch my attention but the RZ does since the RX is too big and expensive. If Lexus can offer a single motor variant (220-250hp), a bit more range, and a price tag that is appealing then I will be sold. I can't stomach $60K+ for what the RZ450e offers compared to the competition. Let's hope Lexus is reading and listening to comments...give us a RZ300 to give us a choice between a single or dual motor and price tag.

I am a very happy '23 RX 350L owner, and the quality of the Mark Levinson audio was one of the reasons I bought it. Yeah, I see it as an electric RX, bring its virtues of luxury/refinement/convenience to an EV. In fact, the additional silence and refinement improve on those virtues. The range is a con, but seemingly a choice by Lexus. Perhaps they see their market as non-road-tripping commuters and retirees? Thanks to both of you, and happy travels.

In the market for a new car and decided to go with an EV this time. Have a Lyriq preordered since May 2022 and depending on how much more it's delayed (hearing Q4 2023 or early 2025 delivery now), might just go with the RZ instead...assuming it isn't similarly delayed. The range and lack of EV tax credit qualification hurts and definitely brings it to a trailing 2nd place compared to the Lyriq, but overall do dig basically everything else of the vehicle.

Ok, I know Lexus buyers that switch to Tesla, anyway, if the RZ 450e offered better range, I think Lexus would be shocked how well it could do, but with its range, can Lexus really justify its starting price and one wonders, how it would do with a lower starting price, overall, I would rank it, behind the Tesla Model Y (better EV in every way, note I said EV), next, the Cadillac Lyriq (one of Cads best model to date and feel worth its price), following the BMW iX (a problem, you have to look at it and dark colors look better) and next the Mercedes EQE SUV (I would wait for it), this may be a stretch, but I have the RZ 450e tied with the Audi e-tron (or upcoming 2024 Q8 e-tron, the name change), crazy but both of these EVs suffer the same problem, range, as for the Genesis GV60 (it's too small, enough said), I know Audi has the Q4 e-tron (it's fine, but wasn't a fan of the VW ID.4, so), I kind of always pull for Lexus or Cadillac vs the Germans, one would ask why didn't Lexus offer quicker charging and a larger battery pack, overall, it's what I expected from the first Lexus EV, given the fact Toyoyta's not a big EV fans

Quality is great but the range will be the downfall for this model. As much I like this car, I am not seduced to get a car that still does up to 300 miles range in 2023! Lexus should have pushed for 400 miles plus to be a serious contender such as Tesla. Shame as I feel maybe there will be a newer version with better battery cells in 1-2 years. Also if they could find a way to charge the car much quicker than any other cars would really a major selling point. Shame because it is otherwise a nice car. But overall it is a car on sale today with technology of other vehicles already on sale in comparison. This is not good enough in my opinion. Lexus must step up if it wants to compete with Tesla. It would be great if the infotainment system could be updated wirelessly like Tesla so the technology advances to improve car features and safety. To me, Lexus is already too late introducing this car. Shame, as I really love Lexus as a brand and I drive a fairly new ES300h (had a GS450h Luxury before). I may opt for another Hybrid NX 450+ or RX450+ instead of RZ450e, as potential replacement within a year or 2...

Yes price is high too. But on the positive side, you get a 10 year warranty and so you can confidently say that the batteries are made excellent quality to retain their full capacity for much longer so value of the car will be sustainable and better than many other EVs. The Plug-in NX is way better than the RZ in terms of overall performance ($58K+) so that variant is out of the question and the NX350h is not up to par with the RZ. Therefore I would conclude a base price for the RZ between $53-60K with two different electrical motors to give consumers a choice between power or range. I think because it has over 300 hp is what sets it back versus making an affordable efficient EV.

From what I heard is that most RZ customers will not need much range and that Lexus will offer free loaners so the RZ can just stay home. For me the range is plenty for my daily commute to work and keep in mind a much lower cost to charge if it has a lower range since the battery is only 71.4 kWh.

I still think the price and range are not aligned. All the interior niceties don't make up for the reality of the poor range. It is in Nissan Leaf range. Really,, what is point of this vehicle? It will have to be charged daily. At $67K I do not see it selling in high numbers. The UX 250 hybrid is $25,000 less..

I think only UT reviewer sreally care about the drive mode switch. We all know that it is nothing more than adjusting throttle response and maybe traction control - no magic button of power waiting to be untapped. AI think Lexus knows most of us that by this class of car don't really obsessive on trying to make it sporty like. In my case, my long past of sporty drive mode cars by default ( BMW and Audi) is long pass. I just want something that start everyday and few visits to the repairs shop now. Been there done that. Actually Toyota just announced they bought a Tesla and tore it apart and were very impressed with some of the aspects of the engineering As far as reliability and build quality…..I’d be buying a Toyota. As far as EV….I don’t care who makes it. Not a chance. Edit: Toyota didn’t announce it. Someone said they did.

@@zemo2332 Please stop the nonsense about the wheels falling off and what Toyota has said about BEVs. That's history. And the wheels never fell off a customer's car like they did with Teslas. So why people bring this up is beyond me. Toyota/Lexus spent a lot of time on the sustainable materials in this car. They spent a lot of time on the variable steer by wire. They spent time putting radiant heating in it. They spent time on getting the noise levels down to Lexus standards. To say they didn't is just bunk. People need to stop looking at only range and charging and look at other aspects of BEVs. Toyota/Lexus said they want to preserve battery life and that's why they don't offer the range and charging speed of other cars. Agree or not but it isn't that they don't take BEV seriously. They wouldn't have made all the moves to make them if they didn't. They even changed CEOs.

@@zemo2332 They aren't antii-EV. That's a fallacy. They aren't all-in on *just* BEVs being in the future. FCEVs are hydrogen EVs. Toyota isn't anti FCEVs, they're one of the earliest to make an FCEV car and they're in their second generation. You may say hydrogen isn't going to work but my point is they aren't anti-that form of EV. BEVs still have the issue of cost for manufacturers to build, the high carbon footprint to build, the mining conditions in certain areas, and more. And hydrogen is not without its issues as well. While I like and support BEVs, I think people should still have a choice to drive hybrids with reduced emissions as well as BEVs if they can. And the infrastructure for BEVs still isn't developed in many markets. Plus, Toyota is in the "developing" countries of Asia and Africa much more so than other makes and they'll need to provide hybrid and gas cars to those markets. And, the infrastructure isn't great for BEVs in Japan so you don't see any Japanese company going BEV only. So, I think you have it wrong about Toyota being anti-EV and there far more people than me that do research to try to figure out Toyota and some other Japanese makers position on them.
