Test Drive: 1994 Lada Sagona

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

"Slow by any standards."
"The clutch is a horror."
"An inordinate amount of body roll."
These are just some of the ways Graeme Fletcher described the 1994 Lada Sagona during its appearance on Motoring TV some 21 years ago.
"There's an old saying (that) you should never judge a book by its cover," says Graeme. "Well this Lada is a classic example.
"Because from afar, things look quite nice. However, closer examination reveals a very different story."
From a "laughable" fit and finish to a rear passenger door that was jammed shut, it's safe to say the Sagona wasn't the shining star of Motoring 1994-or any season for that matter.
(This segment originally appeared on Episode 6 of Motoring 1994.)

Lada abandoned the Canadian market in 1997. My parents had two Ladas...both 1986 Signets. In Sydney, Nova Scotia, they offered an automatic transmission from a Chevette for those customers wanting an automatic transmission. These cars were incredibly popular in Eastern Canada and Atlantic Canada where roads are bad and snow and ice are inevitable. I have fond memories of the two Ladas my parents had in the 1980s and early 1990s.

I had one of these (Canada) brand new and it was honestly a great car. It ended up getting stolen which made the legacy of owning on absolutely hilarious. If I could, I'd buy on, gut it and rally it.

It was a fantastic véhicule when purchased fully loaded, drove it in the alpes for 10 years in any sort of weather. Wishing I could find a car as reliable and easy to maintain today. Lol

This must’ve been a complete lemon! We had a 94 samara when I was growing up and didn’t have any of these problems. The gauge cluster would rattle but a piece of cardboard fixed that, the fan relay would act up so we just hard wired a switch to it and the exhaust rusted out once in 15 years we had it. It was slow but I don’t think 15 second slow. And if you learn how to drive standard on one of these I can tell you you’ll never have a problem driving any other car after because every clutch I’ve used since feels super easy lol I should also mention even after all those years it was still running great and in good shape. It had to go because it wouldn’t pass emissions where we lived anymore due to the carburetor. Even though we got around 40mpg with the thing 🙄

That car was 4995 dollars in 1992, I don't understand why it should get more than the double of its original price just for adding some details and a trunk. Just 2 years later, so it means it got obsolete. If it had keeped its original price no one would had complain. BTW, I love this car, but I also understand this guy

Never knew they bothered selling ladas to North America. With investment the brand could have been really developed into something but the Russians wasted too much time and energy on defence and general paranoia

Later on they did. The emission control carburettor was a pain in the bum and many Lada dealers had no idea how to sort the flawed carburettor. Fuel injection solved all of the fueling woes, but it came too late in the UK. The emission control carburettor did a lot of damage to Lada's reputation.

So sad that export Samaras were fitted with those cheap aftermarket fender flares and bumpers. The steering wheel isnt original either, the oem one is much larger and comfier. Also, after the collapse of the USSR, the Lada factory was on the verge of bankrupcy, and really lacked quality control. Samaras that was made before 92 were less prone for rusting, had better fitment at the panels, and being designed in the 70's, not a bad looking car. There is a video of its development, they really wanted something really good and up to date.

I remeber back in 92 to 94 i used to go to the carshow in toronto. They had cars organized alphabetically ie Alfa romea B bmw C citroen or chrysler anyways lada was always next to lambourghini . what a joke from one extreme to the next. Their pos cars were always locked behind ribbon barricade.like it was a 400.000k car or something. What a joke. Only russians living in toro to drove those pos cars. Now lada is totally different and they have some really awsome cars there.
