Tesla Model X Plaid review: I find out the REAL 0-60mph!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We booked this Tesla on Turo. You can book this Model X and thousands more cars here bit.ly/44w5kQq. Thanks to Turo for helping us organise this one!
Mat’s flown over to the American West Coast, and he’s spending the day in a Tesla Model X Plaid! He’s already tried one out over the 1/4-mile in a drag race, but let’s see what he makes of it for day-to-day living.
Starting with the design, it’s pretty much identical to the original Model X. The outside is very simple, with a minimalist look around the front, back and sides. As Tesla has only ever produced electric cars, there’s (thankfully!) no fake grille at the front. However, one design feature we’re not a fan of are the body panels, which at times don’t match up and are noticeable across the car.
Step inside, and the minimalist design continues! Apart from a few buttons steering wheel, seats, and on the doors, everything in this car is controlled through the huge infotainment screen on the dash. Thankfully the screen is super easy to use and very fast, but we would prefer a few more physical buttons to make things easier to control when driving. As for the build quality, it’s ok in most places, but some areas leave a little to be desired.
As Mat is in the Plaid, it comes with 6 seats - the only option available for this version of the Model X. If you choose a dual-motor, regular Model X, there’s the choice to have it with 5, 6 or 7 seats.
When it comes to performance, the regular dual-motor Model X can produce 676hp, while this Plaid comes with 3 motors and can produce an amazing 1,020hp! Both cars come with the same 95kWh battery pack, and while the dual motor is good for up to 348 miles of range, the Plaid’s range drops slightly, to 337 miles.
The regular Model X costs from around £102,000, while the Plaid comes in at around £127,000. The question is - is it worth it?! Or should you choose one of the other expensive, high-performance electric SUVs out there? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

The genuine replacement facia bumpers we would recieve weren't even close to the quality of even an aftermarket product. What I found the most annoying thing is, that all the other stuff they took out of the car were "discussable". I personally don't like the reduced and minimalist interior, but if that's the philosophy of Tesla, I'm okay with that. But what many people seem to miss with the leavers and the horn; that are safety relevant features, so just taking them out of the car is not acceptable in my oppinion. Especially the missing horn.

You hit on the disaster that will likely come soon to the 3/Y platform is the crappy lack of stalks they rolled out to the S/X. This is something I hate every day on my Plaid. Tesla does it to save a few bucks and it is terrible. I owned a Y for some time and it if was shopping the base model X (long range) against the Model Y performance, I'd take the X over the Y even though it is more money assuming it is in your budget. If you didn't care about performance at all, then the Y long range is a good option unless you really need to carry more than 5 people. I am currently driving an X long range and it is a pretty good car and worth the extra money over the Y. Honestly though I'll take my S Plaid over the X as I don't need to haul as many people.

Mine doesn’t have those problems with panel gaps and has a nice fit and finish, but the paint was 200% orange peel (luckily I just wrapped it in a nice satin orange colour instead). As you own one, the indicators get easier pretty quickly and you pick up some tricks like the fact that you can trigger an extra aggressive version of the horn by just mashing your hand on all the buttons on the right hand side of the wheel/yoke. All in all, I love mine. It’s comfortable, a great place to be, wonderful for long trips, the sound system is awesome. And the things that happen when you floor it are still just bonkers, even after having had the car for over half a year. I love it.

Used to own a Model X - absolutely loved every bit of that car. It had its issues, being a bit experimental you could say, with some fits and finishes being a bit wonky... but it was absolutely amazing as well. The doors were so practical, and the boot was huge, even with a 6-seater. Have a Model Y Performance now - also really great, but it's a bit boring when you have owned a Model X. Even almost a year after we sold it.. I still try to hit the break when I get in, to close the door. Got too used to that... so convenient.

Either not much research was done or these points were purposely left out.

Regarding the annoying things. There is an auto shift function. Not sure if it’s not over there but it detects your position and will shift into the direction it believes you want to go in when you hit the brake. Also if you stand in front of the side door, it won’t open all the way. Have to come from behind it haha there’s a lot of features that you have to adjust to like the steering wheel controls but once you do it’s cool. Also I have the 22’s which I feel drive the X far better than the 20’s. The steering and suspension settings really let you customize your preferences. Cool side note, when it reaches 110mph, it will automatically adjust the suspension to very low. Just noticed this the other day

I think it makes sense and it’s not a fair comparison - you can’t text people or scroll social media through the car screen. Tesla’s intuitive software makes it easy enough to change simple things like climate and volume - you even do those things from the steering wheel without taking your hands off the wheel. The screen also won’t become a projectile if you have a crash. I think for certain functions it just makes sense generally. How often do you adjust your mirrors or steering wheel to justify there being a button that is always physically there for it?

Unlike most of Matt's videos, this one has much more missing/misinformation than usual. Strange, because Matt knows Teslas pretty well. Honking can be done by mashing right side of the wheel spoke over the buttons. You almost NEVER need to cancel the signal because it's done automatically using Tesla Vision -- works really well. Didn't share that Steam OS is on-board, just like a Steam Deck! The sunvisors can be positioned in any angle as it sweeps across -- no need to snap it to the magnet. The middle seats can be set to move forward/after with a single press of the button (no need to hold the button down). The automatic front doors didn't open all the way because Matt is standing right in front of the door. It's not going to open right into him. Also, you can enable the doors to open as you approach it, hands-free.

Maybe a good thing to tell your viewers Tesla refined the brakes of plaid (the model x in this video has the refined brakes) and these refined brakes are supposed to reduce overheating and handle the heat better. Also, you don’t have to shift on screen. There’s a gear selector right below the wireless charging pads.

This is not my taste but probably one of the best cars that currently exists. It's not the master of anything except speed but the entire package put together is incredible. From luxury features to handling to technology. Matt didn't even mention AP (or the paid-for FSD). The latest software update also means you can use your PS5 controller for the games, now it supports Steam. Wouldn't buy one unless my work required a LOT of driving around but will definitely rent one given half the chance. Oh and there were a few mistakes, like the door not opening because he was standing in front, there are buttons for gear selection, etc, but that's ok. It was still a perfectly good review. Phillip.

The parts that weren't fading were extra shiny and looked cheap - reminded me of an old Chrysler I use to drive. You only have to adjust the steering wheel and mirrors once and then it saves your profile. Blinkers also have an auto off option you can turn on which will automatically shut them off when you finish switching lanes as well as turning. He also forgot to mention (conveniently) that you there is a PDNR gear selection touch bar under the dual wireless charging pad that you can use if you don't like the auto selection or the touch screen. It's also worth noting the 336 kWh average he pointed to with efficiency he referred to was after dong several full 1,000 hp pulls which would have increased the average energy consumption. You'll get even better efficiency if you drive... legally.

  • @1meen1

    @1meen1

    9 ай бұрын

Isn't the PDNR gear selection touch bar only supposed to be used if the screen messes up? Also it's not really better than the touch screen, as it's even lower than the screen and you have to look at it. The point he was making, I believe, was for the lack of physical controls. Although if I'm not mistaken, you're not supposed to fiddle with any of the selectors and the car automatically chooses drive/reverse for you?
