I tried both and bought the Ioniq 5 which is now in my hands. Have to disagree on a couple of points. I personally much prefer the interior of the Ioniq 5 and also much prefer having the screen in front of me showing speed, regen, safety features etc. It is no at all blocked by the steering wheel. This review didnt even show things like the blind spot cameras that show up when you indicate. The display that shows all the cars around you when driving on the motorway so you know exactly where the other cars are, all on a convenient display in front of your face!

The Ioniq 5 is actually in between the M3 and MY, since the latter is even bigger. I cross shopped between the three. Would have preferred the MY, but here in the NL it costs >€70k (with trailer hitch and advanced Autopilot). Full spec Ioniq 5 was €58k (RWD, including tow hitch and panoramic roof, glass coating, extra rubber mats, etc). Model 3 LR was even more expensive than that, and the sedan style boot just wouldn't work for us. But I think as an EV maker, Tesla are far superior, especially with efficiency, software and charging infrastructure. Plus they are ramping up capacity so quickly it will leave the others in the dust.

I would go for the Hyundai, only because I need to carry longer items and have seen nothing to suggest the Tesla could do this (almost no-one measures the length behind the front seats in reviews, it's all about volume, which most ordinary people don't think about about, only car reviewers).

Does anyone think the Tesla's are becoming overpriced here in the UK? I've had a face-lifted Model 3 for the last 6 months, but it has a very hard and non-compliant ride which wasn't so apparent during my test drive. I guess I was blown away by the fiercest acceleration I'd ever experienced! Common sense, and my bruised and battered bottom, has now prevailed so I've ordered a replacement - the Ioniq 5. Guess I'm just getting older but I know I'll prefer the softer and more comfortable ride.

I get the impression the reviewer has spend more time in TM3s than in the I5. I own an I5P45, but did drive TM3s on several occasions. To me the build quality and material use are still better in the I5. The panels he touches while stating that there are hard plastics in the Hyundai, are actually all soft touch materials. And although the TM3 may have a bigger booth according to whatever standard, it ultimately still is a sedan/saloon that lacks the practicality of the I5. Something to keep in mind when you have a young family, or need to move around larger objects.

I tested the Kia eNiro, Ioniq 5, ID.3 and the Model 3 in Summer and settled on the Model 3 SR+. The Ioniq 5 was also OK, but felt a bit cumbersome in town and the 58KWh version (which I would have been able to afford) just had too high consumption..so despite it's fast charging it just has to charge too often. Also, the really cool features on the Ioniq all require the top level trim, while Tesla offers most of the as standard. One issue with the Tesla though, is that the Software isn't well suited for Europe/Germany yet with many features either not working or not working wel at the moment. I am hoping that will change next year though...

  • @remz5722

I disagree with the boot space comparison, if you are to look at the practicality, the seats in the Ioniq can be moved quite far forward and still leave lots of leg-room for passangers in the back. which would leave more space for luggage. Not to mention the more practical boot opening. Bjørn Nyland does his "banana box" tests. In which the model 3 could hold only 6 banana boxes in the boot, that's including the underfloor compartment, which would be 7 with the frunk. The Ioniq 5 could hold 11 in comparison. (which makes sense since the Ioniq has the bigger boot. The same test shows that with the seats folded, the model 3 holds 17 boxes (16 in boot/backseat +1 in frunk), while the Ioniq 5 could hold 25 boxes with the seats folded (which is not far from the amount the tesla model X (28boxes) could hold in the same test). The Ioniq5 wins that battle hands down.

Have you driven a Tesla yourself? I wouldn't call the interior "boring", I'd call it minimalist. You don't need a hundred displays and dials in your face when the car is making most of the decisions for you. It mentally offloads a lot of the trivial decision-making and lets you focus on driving without needing to constantly know random info about the vehicle. Agreed on the service issues and build quality problems though, Teslas are notoriously bad for this.

@@BackfallGenius I've driven 13 electric Cars, and I love Tesla's tech, but I find their interiors shallow and bare. Too much focus on the tablet, and not enough ease of use. I've driven a BMW 640D gran coupe for 4 years, Heads up display and the full package, so I never need to take my view off driving to check what speeds I'm doing. We are at a point now where Tesla's ain't the industry standards as before. Others have caught up, and some have surpassed Tesla. My next drive will be the BMW I4, and the new iX next week. I've driven 3 Tesla's, 3,S and X.

I'm surprised the TM3 came out on top. A head scratcher for me is that the world is moving to Crossovers and the Ioniq5 is much more in that styling dynamic with a higher seating position and more usable cargo space. And let's not forget that Hyundai build quality and design are now world class and have been for some time. Tesla quality ratings are consistently poor but I do understand the attraction and cool factor of the Tesla. Unfortunately EV's and their price points are still "lifestyle" vehicles. The regular working stiff can't afford many of these which is a shame.

Great video! I know at least three people who really wanted the Ioniq 5 and ultimately ended up placing an order for the Model 3 due to the lack of proper charging infrastructure in the US and UK. I cannot believe how car manufacturers still haven't figured out that charging infrastructure needs to be the #1 priority to sell these vehicles. Consumers need to be able to reliably charge the car as easily as they can fuel up at gas stations. It doesn't matter how much cooler, faster, or better the actual vehicle is over the Model 3 unless you're able to conveniently charge it. It feels like auto manufacturers in both the US and Europe are just waiting for their governments to install public charging facilities to push EV sales and piggyback on that. But nothing's happening on that front (even with the new bills that passed). Almost all Chargepoint public charging stations in the US are either really slow or out of order half the time, making them extremely unreliable. Until the charging infrastructure for EVs dramatically improves, Tesla will continue dominating the market because of their widespread and highly reliable Supercharger network.

Dude, you're wrong on a number of issues. First, the ioniq 5 hasn't been officially released in the US. We don't even have official pricing yet. Second, different parts of the US have much better charging infrastructure like in California. Third, a federal bill was recently passed to install 100,000 chargers nationwide and they won't be the slow versions either. Fourth, Tesla announced a few months ago that they are opening their charging network to non-Tesla vehicles.

I currently have a 2-year-old top trim Hyundai Kona EV and it is a great car with good efficiency and performance, though a little on the small side. Prior to purchase, EV offerings were limited. Tesla Model 3 had just been released in the UK. At the time, I felt the Model 3 was technically a better car compared to the Kona EV for many of the reasons you mention in your video, but Tesla had QA issues, and the closest service centre was a 30-mile drive. Whereas my Hyundai dealer is a 2-minute walk. I intend to replace my Kona next year. The Hyundai Ionic 5 Ultimate AWD and Tesla model Y Long Range are on my short list, but it is a difficult choice. I still feel Tesla's are technically better than Hyundai's, especially with regards software and charging infrastructure, but Tesla prices have risen significantly, plus I am concerned about Model Y's ride. Hyundai rushed the release of Ioniq 5, so it ended up with a smaller large battery compared with the Kia EV6, its efficiency is poor compared with the Kona, plus its performance can drop significantly after rapid charging until the battery cools. The latter sounds like poor battery management software. So, still undecided, or wait for the Ionic 5 2023 model!

Not a mad comparison, as I had both cars on my list. Surprised at the tesla boot coming out as more practical. In the real world you're not going to lug just carry-on cases. It's not a starter for dogs, and would have problems with large boxes. I love the look of the Ioniq 5, and the fact it has a hatch, and the size inside. The disappointing thing is that it's just so darn big. This video is the first where you can see them side by side. This means that it's harder to park and/or closer to other cars.... which on a £40k+ car is a worry... is someone gonna bash your car. The size also affects efficiency. Here the Tesla is the clear winner, and combined with the supercharger network makes it a winner for longer trips. If you can fill up at home and/or have known places where you can charge, then charging is not an issue, but efficiency will affect your total bills. I plumped for a Model 3 LFP, as the Mrs went for a Corsa e to carry the dogs. If I want to nip to the supermarket then I'll take the corsa, cos even the Tesla's a bit bigger to park than the Corsa. Both cars put a big smile on your face when driving. The Corsa / Peugeuot e 208 seems to be good value compared to many new EVs. It can be got for nearly half the £ of either of these cars, and even though it's marginally less efficient, it will take a looong time to get the difference back. Also of note on the Corsa are the matrix headlights, and the sound quality of the Media system. Okay it's only wired Apple Carplay / Android Auto, but that probably is a bit-rate improvement (i.e. SQ improvement) compared to wireless. The SQ is better so far than it is on the model 3, but that has been only via bluetooth so far. If Hyundi / Kia made something that looks like an Ioniq 5, but was a similar size to a Golf... then that would have been the Mrs car. If the Ioniq 5 had vehicle to grid then I might have taken that instead. Every current EV is a compromise. Get the one that works for 90% of your journeys. Like someone said maybe hire a van for the long trips. Whatever you get, you'll love it. And you won't be going back to ICE.

Prefer the look of the Ioniq I would not have a Tesla as a present for two other reasons. A friend of mine has had nothing but trouble with his Tesla. Hyundai have a far bette reputation for reliability also that 'cinemascope' screen inn the Tesla is obscene! I really don't need a tv size screen in any car I own.

Exactly. With the Ioniq you'd be getting a car that is built to a higher standard than the Tesla, and also has a superior warranty should you need it.

I can't seem to match your TESLA price from their website. Blue is 1,000 extra, white interior is 1,000 extra, fsd 10,000, plus if you read their FAQ---you can activate the heated steering wheel and backseat--but it's extra. It would have been nice to list the breakdowns for each car. The IONIC 5 top-of-the-line comes out less than this Tesla----63,000 for the car you show.

Definitely the Ioniq 5. More interior space, an instrument panel, and standout styling. I see far too many older professionals driving a Tesla ---- getting an image like Mercedes or Opel.

Reviewer has not noticed that Ioniq 5 is a hatchback so has far more luggage capacity and more flexibility than the Tesla 3. What a numpty!

In Videos and pictures de Ioniq 5 looks great, but in reality he still looks good but much clunkier especially compared to the Model 3.

Why did you compare the base trim vs. the SR+? The SEL Ioniq 5 is the fair comparison based on pricing. The one area Hyundai could do better is making the panoramic roof standard on the SEL instead of only offering it on the top Limited model.

At what low speed does the ADAS/LKAS quit functioning? On my Kia, it is 40 mph. Owning a 2018 Niro PHEV EX Premium, I am all too familiar with the poor interior quality and myriad other issues that can make it feel like a cheap econobox. Not that I am sold on the Tesla because of what I consider missing features for the price - 360 camera, cooled seats, V2L/V2G, etc. Also, really surprised you don’t miss Apple CarPlay, I think I would find this a serious omission. I just ordered a Tesla MY, but I have quite a while until delivery, which I can defer, so I am researching and anxiously awaiting possible alternatives. However, it looks like the ADAS/FSD capabilities will be the deciding factor.

Ioniq 5 is marked up $10k at the old fashioned dealerships. Making it way more expensive than the Model 3, which everyone pays the same exact amount. NO BS. That's worth it alone.

When I’ve seen other reviewers put the Ioniq5 up against its sister car the Kia EV6…..the KIA comes out on top. So maybe interesting to see the Kia go up against the Tesla Model 3.

For me it would be a choice between the Ioniq 5 and the Tesla Model Y and I'm tall enough that I would have to sit in both cars to see how they would fit. That said, I tend to lean towards the Ioniq 5. The Tesla's minimalist interior with a single center mounted screen just leaves me cold and I think the Hyundai's ride/handling compromise would work better for many of the areas where I may travel to. The best thing about owning a Tesla is that I would have access to their wonderful Supercharger network, which would make it easier to recharge during long trips. Thankfully its going to be at least 5 years before I have to worry about a new car so I can see what the market and charging options are when I am ready for my next car.
