You forgot to talk about one of the main reason why the batteries are round. They use a cooling system for the battery cells that goes around the cylinder batteries. One of the main reasons for the battery efficiency of tesla car batteries is that they can easily keep the cool.

5:50 About Sodium-ion batteries, according to the french searcher who are develloping it they are not here to replace the lithium-ion batterie because of their low energy density. Instead they are focussing on develloping it for big batteries pack (like a home energy storage) or incidentally for rental car because of the hight speed charge of the sodium-ion batteries.

yutuniopati Apparently there’s two versions of the sodium ion battery. 10x density with 2x faster charging than Lithium batteries, and 2x density with 10x faster charging.

Ultimately we need to wait and see what they really end up getting, in battery research not a week goes by without someone claiming to have 1000x more energy density and numerous other claims, but that never ends up being true in a real battery.

My new house will have a *Tesla SolarRoof* and a pair of *PowerWalls* (among other whizbang renewable tech)... 11 days without power in the _sweltering_ SW Florida summer after *Hurricane Irma* is not something I ever want to repeat !! I love your videos - they give a great overview of some very interesting topics, with just enough dept to learn something new every time :) I was wondering about one thing you said in this video though. At 5:05, just after talking about battery cells, you say: "The core technology of Tesla, however, cannot be easily copied by other manufacturers". Would you please elaborate on this? Original technology was from the battery called eneloop. Bought by panasonic from the soft energy division of Sanyo Electric which developed the technology that until now has not been surpassed by any commercially produced cells
When you say it could be driven with one pedal I got a bit confused. I was under the impression that the further you depressed the brake the more the induction motor would tax the vehicles speed by spinning faster in reverse to charge the batteries more. Panic braking and the final halt to be provided by the brake pads. Is this not the case?

I think that the 2170 battery also have a different chemistry, so the 2170 IS better 1865. I remember hearing this in a quarterly investor call with Tesla.

In the call, its said to be 20% better. the thing is, the fundamental chemistry is not different, it more about how the chemistry is arranged so that the Lithium ion can be "absorbed faster'. So as a cell, 2170 is better, for its size

Yes, it is not fundamentally different, but the energy density is 10-15% better in 2170 compared to the 1865 Elon pointed out in the call.

It would be interesting that EV have connectors that we could connect our houses, computers and all electric stuff to take advantage of all this power.
So overtime batteries are prone to wear and tear and gonna need to be replaced ?
They're did 22,300 deliveries in September 2018 of just the model 3 alone, and has ed gotten the battery prices down to $100-103 per kwhr
I like this type of car batteries because if you crash your car, those little pieces would just get scattered all over and have much more chances to remain unbroken. If you have 1 big solid housed battery, on every impact they will get broken and leak and explode or whatever. I think this type is way more safer then other types.
5:00 you said the core technology can't be copied, you mean battery technology? but isn't it the technology of the battery manufacturers like Panasonic and CATL?
Someone may have asked this already, but I thought the cathode is the negative electrode and the anode the positive? He said electrons flow from the negatively charged anode to the positively charged cathode.
How safe are these? In collision or in daily use.
You missed the biggest difference between the 18650 and the 21700, which is power density. The 21700 cell has been claimed to have 40% more active battery volume, even though it is only slightly fatter and taller.

Joe Wdowiak I can agree. I set up unregulated vape mods all the time. I know a load about ohms law and how the different cells compare. You are absolutely correct lol every person who has tried these batteries themselves know why 21700 is better than 18650 and 26650 or any other variant so far. The vape community knows more about this than most people ever will I'm glad to see someone who understands haha

Tesla needs to get its quality control up. And by a lot. It's easy to build a few luxury cars. Making affordable quality cars in large numbers is something that Tesla still needs to learn. Recently VW hired a former Tesla engineer. Tesla needs to get its act together if it wants to survive. Tesla also doesn't design its own batteries. They are made by Panasonic as well as LG

1:28. The 18650 cells are made by panasonic. + They are not 65mm wide they are actually 6.5mm. I think that may be just a mistake.

Yeah you are right I wanted to to correct that but i couldn't. 6.5mm would be too short. They are 18mm in diameter and 65mm in length. I am not stupid but I was wrong.

I'm a bit confused about what you said. You said that if someone tells you the 21700 batteries are better than they are dead wrong, and directly after saying that you said the 21700 batteries are better due to a higher storage compasety. Or did you mean if someone said it's better just because it's a higher number. Either way I did like the video, but clarification would be appreciated.
correct me if I'm wrong but you say that one battery is not better than the other, then in the next sentence you say the form factor is better in the 21700. Making the energy density ratio better, wouldn't that mean it's a better battery?

I think until and unless we get a major battery breakthrough, like the development of solid state batteries, electric cars will continue to be a niche market. It is possible, however, that for urbanites like myself we will move toward occasional renting of electric vehicles rather than owning gasoline vehicles.

Do you see Tesla ever making a play at mass producing batteries at Gigafactory I for, say, Apple? I know EV batteries are quite different than mobile phone batteries as you mentioned, but was just curious if you think its possible and if its a path Tesla would be open to taking at some point in the future, if the unit economics is competitive with their Taiwanese conterpart.

Apple Revenue 229 Billion. Tesla Revenue abt 10.5 Billion. More likely Apple will buy tesla, scrap the car and turn the factory into a cell phone battery place on their own. Seriously, their are much better sources for the Apple battery than Tesla.
On the 2170 Tesla batteries, I was told by an ex-Tesla engineer, personally, at my house, to wait to buy a Tesla that has the 2170 battery as some of the chemistry in the battery has upgraded and is more superior, in every way. I'm taking his suggestion.

Russell Fine Arts I believe that might be true....what he told you regarding the 2170 batteries. I think the narator might have it wrong. I believe these battery cells (2170) is what Tesla will be using on the new roadster.

Actually, the 2170 cells have been going in all Tesla cars since mid-to-late summer, this year...since the gigafactory has been producing. The Roadster II and Semi and I'm sure all Tesla's after 2020, will have a solid-state LIB. Solid-state LIB's offer 2.5 times the capacity of current LIB's, are less-expensive and offer a whole host of benefits from today's LIB's.

Wayne Russell True. He did make that statement. But, that doesn't mean plans don't change. I think Tesla will most likey use a different battery pack inside the Model S and X next year (although there is really no need to do so). I just think Elon Musk will want to use the Model S and X to prove that what he said of the Roaster's acceleration capabilities is certainly possible.

Smart move by any CEO--don't announce new tech too far in advance or it kills current sales. I fully understand as I used to work for Apple and every time a new computer came out, the old models stopped selling, even at huge discounts. If new models were leaked, sales would stall as people waited for the new stuff. I doubt we'll hear much about Tesla's solid-state batteries until right when they are introduced.
How will they double the capacity for the roadster 2 if it's lithium cobalt?

I have no understanding for the workings of batteries, but i was wondering; Could a battery be developed that could be recharged by replacing the liquid component of the battery with "fresh" fluid and the used fluid then somehow "charged" seperately. If you think about cars, you should see what im aiming at here. Just wondering if a battery like that could exist.

The fuel cell argument is basically right, but I don't believe that was your question. The answer to your question in no. Think of it this way. A battery stores energy. To fill it requires energy, and if it's a car, it takes a TON on energy. The only way to fill it is to apply energy to it.

My take in the Musk / Tesla strategy, 1) Keep a close eye on new developments & what is coming, don't lock yourself too firmly to one exact technology. 2) But don't sit and wait for hell to freeze over! Get started with manufacture and use right now, on a scale that can create economies of scale, and be ready to drop one technology and pick another as soon as it comes online. Change and adapt and move forward, but do that while you make cars! If you wait for the picture to stabilise, then you'll still be waiting in 100 years... 3) This is not going to be easy. Well, landing rockets on a barge, after they've launched a couple tons of orbital cargo, that's not easy either...

Excellent points. I, personally, don't think Tesla is positioned very well to win the electric car battle, but it certainly makes sense to go with what you can do and keep adapting new tech as you can.

The planet earth has to be evacuated than. So much for exaggeration. The chemicals are enclosed by a metal mantle, would take some time for corrosion to get to the core, you would be still able to pick it up to save the earth from it's inevitable doom. Now on the other hand, what would happen if something rips open an ICE car on its bottom and oil or petrol spills all over a "green ground". How many toxic square meters are that? Just because it is a battery doensn't mean we should tread it careless. Recycling is a thing and it would be wasteful to throw batteries away.
instead of adding each cell why cant they build big battery in same volume occupied by the small batteries

Philip Leonardo Or Silicon electrodes. Tesla is already using some Silicon in their batteries, but we don’t know how much and to what effect. Silicon is probably more of a holy grail than solid state.

Folks a BTU is a BTU. You can do all kinds of nibbling on the edges of getting more BTU into and out of a battery but the physics are going to limit you - at least in terms of how much juice you can pack into a given weight. And, unlike a fossil fuel car which burns it's fuels' weight, a battery car carries that weight everywhere it goes. Lithium as the lightest metal is likely to remain a key ingredient.

It's recyclable and it is abundant, but it will take time to ramp up. Much harder to solve the grid problems and either solving cobalt supply or creating a viable alternative.
Battery tech is one of many underrated tech. And Elon has bring it to the public so we are more aware and therefore could hopefully boost this tech development. Thanks to him, now electric car is not a "far future" tech, it's now here and here it stays! Good luck!

I can appreciate the man-love stuff here as Musk is a true icon, but seriously, the car was already being built when he bought the company and while he's pushed it hard and fast on the technology, he's not quite the one man show your comment intimates.
In video you have described negatively charged anode and positively charged cathode but anode is ' + ' and cathode is' - '

they should be using 26650's. LG, Samsung, and Panasuckit batteries are all trash, just because they have the same volume doesn't mean that they will perform the same. I have used 18650's form all 3 brands, and I can say that there are brands that greatly stand out from them. Therefore, there is no doubt in my mind that Tesla's batteries are currently the best in the world. Their technology is different, but is housed in batteries of the same size such as, 18650, and 21700. @CharlesCloutier

Nope. Well, I guess an argument could be made. However, the number of engineers working on these issues among the large car companies will drown out Tesla is short order. Very little of Tesla's stuff is exclusively patented. That would be fine if they were able to sustain the cash burn they are in now, but even Musk's magic raising money is going to be challenged.

Because it's marketing wank. All the "graphene" batteries are normal cells, it's just that someone from marketing heard that graphite is multiples layers of graphene and made a buzz word out of it.

Not all graphene batteries are "normal cells". Graphene supercapacitors are being made now and some are very simple to make. They use graphene nanoparticles which are being made in bulk by several organisations. I hope Elon is looking into these because he and Tesla will be at a disadvantage if he does not move on from chemical batteries - and not in 20 years, more like 2.

Problem is: Ramp up energy density means having progressively more instability and risk. A current battery is considered quite at the verge of being too dangerous already... I guess, charging and recharging capabilities will be more in focus, than really trying to squeeze in 10 times or so energy. What I always wanted to know and I will look it up.....what capacity and c-ratings do their batteries have. If you are into model flying, you exactly know about every single problem of longevity, puffing, etc. -> All those people know one fact: Those batteries are divas. This whole supercharging stuff still is in question for me. The best you can do and that is, what most of us luckily do anyways (so it is great): Come home and charge on reasonable speeds over night. This will be good and naturally achieved by most of us during normal use. I just find it funny, that so many people talk about supercharging and all that stuff. Increase the range just a bit more reliably and you cater most of us already.....no need to talk about recharge times for 80% of us, as we do not drive more than 400 km a day! :) All nonsense to even talk about it, as hybrids or even other new technologies can easily serve better for longrange driving.....or such travels will be handled completely different than we expect (long range traffic systems, other kinds of long range travelling, etc.). Future is not about just going all in of what s considered most advanced or something. It is about seeing, what different tech can do best. You will not suddenly build batteries with 60 times the energy density, that comes close to chemical fuels....the nature of a device having to charge and recharge cannot simply compete with a energy packed chemical substance, that disappears essentially after using its energy. It is a one way ticket vs a reusable device...nature did that stuff for a reason (fat, sugar, etc.). So for me, it is thinking about most suitable and at the same time effective solutions. And those are not EV only or such things. It will be a mix, because completely going EV as fast as possible wont work with our currently fast world and its needs. If we would all sacrifice stuff signifiicantly, we can perhaps reach such state of society. But as long as we are all some sort of relentless consuming beasts on our planet, you cannot simply go green in a blink of an eye. Every reasonable thinking individual knows that and yes: The other companies will be more reasonable about it. You will have standards and can choose between all cars and you will always find suitable charging stations, etc.....something that a tesla (though part of the consortium) isnt currently going for. They just are all in to grow their tech achievements to the fullest...sacrificing a lot of its sustainability. Why? Because they must have a good headstart or they will be crushed in a matter of months. It is an all in situation.
li-air is years, maybe decades away - yes progress has been good but its not nearly where it needs to be - necessary progress will enable loads of next-gen li-ion batteries in its wake such as li-metal electrodes and inflammable electrolytes
Solid state batteries maybe 4 to 5 years tops shood allow for commercial jets

why not they provide to 2 sets of battery and alternator at the same time,1 set will be use using operation/driving the one set is a spare, once the set 1 of battery was discharged then it will shifted to second set then the 1st set will be charge during operation/driving using the alternator..

How do you maximize the proximity of the cathode and anode with as thin of a gap as possible and from a material you can actually manufacture (they use very think films), and the more square inches of those films the better from a power density standpoint.

More specifically, they're not allowed to land it. Landing things on Mars is heavily regulated by international space organisations, because to avoid affecting scientific studies the object to be landed has to be VERY clean, and not contain any stowaways from Earth.

I don't think it will straight up, the initial landers I think will have to ensure that they operate on the surface under the same guidelines. Obviously we can't keep it up forever, but I think it makes sense for a few years to get as much sciency stuff done under clean conditions as we can. Of course, once we have uncontaminated samples that we can use for further study it's not such a big problem. Also, not sure they'd get arrested, but big fines might be levied against them which is not something they want when trying to develop a new rocket. Also, they are scientists and understand the issues above, and so wouldn't intentially do it anyway because they're not arseholes.

that's a panasonic battery with a tesla label, manufactured with panasonic equipment, leased to tesla.
