I know the struts are sold out right now but be patient and Amazon will restock. Don't buy the ones the ones that are $160. That is a seller that is trying to capitalize on this.

I did the same auto-pop on both my trunk and frunk all for under $20 and like 15 minutes of work... Since 4 years ago, the price on these trunk struts had gone down a lot. You now can find some at Amazon around $20. What I did was to swap out the back trunk struts with these spring struts. And it worked out great other than it is now harder to close the trunk. Then I swap the original back trunk struts with the frunk struts. The back trunk struts are perhaps 5cm shorter than the frunk struts but they are much more powerful and will be able to lift the front hood with just one of the old back trunk struts.

I just wanted to share my experience following the steps in this video: #1 The stock struts did NOT come off easily on my Model 3. I did release the back clamps while maneuvering them off. It cracked my glass and tore the weather stripping on one side when it finally came off. Same tightness issue when removing the new struts to go back to stock. Maybe my Model 3 has slightly different specs? VIN 13xxx #2 The StrongArm 4129 struts made the trunk fly open much faster than his does in this video. It would hit you in the face if you opened the trunk manually. I had to bring it back to spec since this is not what anyone would want. #3 The trunk does NOT close as flush as stock. The trunk is lifted from the body slightly and it is noticeable. Now I hope I'm not stuck paying over $1k for a new backglass. :(

Being an engineer, decided to modify the auto-trunk opening approach to see if I could create a better option. I believe I have succeeded. Though the struts I am using are a bit more expensive, they are a better dimensional match to the original struts and the springs I am using are a much closer fit (less slop on the rod) and also require no washers making it a much cleaner install. I modified the below struts with different end connectors to match the original strut length so the trunk opening height now remains the same (maybe even a few tenths of an inch higher). Here are the parts required: 2 each: www.liftsupportsdepot.com/lift-supports-depot-st140m1-160-gas-charged-universal-lift-support/ 4 each: www.liftsupportsdepot.com/qty-1-10mm-ball-socket-nylon-end-m8x1-25-black-with-black-band/ 2 each: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LBTMPCH A bit more closing force is required (with or without springs - springs add no noticeable effect) but it works great. This option should also have no problem with an added spoiler. Let us all know how it works for you if you decide to follow suit with these parts. Cheers!

Only had the car for three weeks and have only had the struts in for two so can't provide long term feedback. However, these struts are high quality and heavier than stock so I have no worries there. I suppose the springs could lose some tension over time though my guess would be years at a minimum and they can be easily replaced. You could also use a different spring if that was a worry. I did add one washer to each side to give it had a bit more initial throw length: www.ebay.com/itm/US-Stock-50pcs-M10-10mm-304-Stainless-Steel-Metric-Flat-Washer-Washers/371863960263 Made the add as it didn't raise once on when parked on an incline. I tried two but there wasn't enough room and it wouldn't shut.

The goal with the model 3 was to make it a cheap car to repair. If you have any issues down the road, the fix will be mucchhh cheaper than fixing a model S. I like that it's simple with tech and none of the luxury. Luxury vehicles will always cost more to repair and depreciate quicker.

@@whatsdrugs Didn't mean no luxury lol, but they went with the most useful luxury features and left out expensive ones such as air suspension, pop out handles, real leather seats, expensive wheels, etc.

Finally got all my parts together and did this mod. Works great! Had to get struts from rock auto because Amazon was never in stock. Got the springs on ebay.

Just did this today: what a difference! Of course my local HD was sold out of 5/16" and M8 washers of all kinds - except neoprene, so I got that, package of 2 for 94 cents. It's not like I use the trunk that much; if it wears out I'll replace it. The process was simple indeed but I still checked your video several times to make sure! THANKS BRIAN!!

Just put these on my Tesla 3 am beyond excited!! What an easy fix. I had my handy man do it after I ordered the parts. It took less him than 3 minutes for him to do!!! Works perfectly. Thank you. Now will do the frunk. Want to make sure no other part for the frunk other than the strut, correct? I’m soooo fu--en happy!!! What doesn’t Tesla do this!

This is so cool. We just bought the model 3 and the frunk and trunk not opening automatically was a huge miss on their part. This is a simple and genius easy fix. I just ordered the parts with your link and will be installing as soon as they arrive.

Got my rear struts replaced like your video and it works great. I never would have thought of doing this. I did mine a little different with the washer. I used black nylon washers and I put it on after the spring. Reason is, when the spring is compressed it is pushing hard against the plastic tip. Not sure if that plastic tip will withstand the pressure of the spring over time so it might help keep the spring from digging into the plastic tip. I only had two washers otherwise I'd put a wash on both sides of the spring. :)

Great, I already ordered the ones for the frunk and hope they come today. For the trunk I still hope there will be some aftermarket kit that can both open and close as on the model S but this is half one and the most important way for just a couple of dollars. Thanks.
