Terrible Review Of An AliExpress Pre-Built 6 Stage Coil Gun

So I've always wanted to build a rail gun or a coil gun. I was gonna do it in the last year but I currently work in healthcare so the last like year and a half has been crazy, and I 'm having health problems myself. So after doing a little searching I decided to risk it and buy a 6 stage coil gun off of AliExpress. I mean I'd give it 5 stars if it didn't take 2 months to get here and 4 moths to figure out why it wasn't working. If you like what ya see and want to see more coil gun videos or black powder cannon videos let me know. I might try to build a 10 stage with bigger caps this year.... But we'll see, maybe I'll just buy one instead. Enjoy my terrible review.

Thanks! Surgery was a success! Have just been very busy with work, but that is about to end. Hopefully making a couple new videos soonish. Trying to get my hands on some of those fireworks that you throw and they explode when they hit the ground (like "snappers" or something). I want to see if I can blow up a pill bottle full of them with the coil gun. Bit expensive and kinda hard to find this time of year.

I've purchased many from Ali but don't recommend this model as the last few stages suck back slow down, they use same turns on each coil but should be less each stage, I do recommend the ten stage that has top cover over circuit board and shrink tube over everything it's well designed and can shoot great distance just be sure to adjust voltage output of hv board as it it different based on input voltage

No speed readings. Was going to buy chronograph but some other things came up. I have 3 types of ammo that I have been using. It came with 6mm stainless steel bb's and 3 or 4 little steel rods like 3/4 inch long but not close to 6mm. I made my own projectiles out of 1/4" steel rod, they're both larger and longer than the rods it came with. I also ground them down to a point but am having trouble keeping them from tumbling. Hopefully making a new video showing all that this weekend.

I get a rod of steel iirc it's like 1/4 inch diameter. I cut slugs that are 1 inch long then I put it in my drill and use the drill and a small dremmel grinder to grind the front down to a point. They end up looking like tiny artillery shells without the casing. Has minimal effect on accuracy, the gun is accurate and will put one after another in like a 1/4 inch grouping at 15ft with no noticeable drop in trajectory. Oh and you have to sand the entire piece of 1/4 inch just a little or it won't fit into the firing tube.

So this one was supposed to run off of 4 18650 batteries with the boost converter it came with. I bought the batteries and had them all charged up just for when the coilgun came. Tried to put the batteries in, everything was wired correctly, nothing happened though. No charging the caps. I ditched the original boost converter and bought the one I am using in the video (DC12V to DC200-450V 70W). I ditched the batteries and use that small power supply to charge instead of batteries ( 0-2A 0-15V DC Power Supply 1502D+ LED Display for Mobile Phone Repair Power Test smile.amazon.com/dp/B07QBPTGHY/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_BBDKVEKTQ4B0K2ZE7KBC?_encoding=UTF8&psc= ). Would I buy the 10 stage? 100% yes. The 6 stage goes through steel candle lids and will shoot straight through an interior door and still have enough power to stick into the wall on the other side. My first shot with this I was shooting at a cheap Walmart side table from like 10ft away, the projectile went right through the side table and continued another 7ft and stuck in my drywall. I would 100% buy the 10 stage but I would buy it as a kit and build it myself.

Side note: the projectiles it comes with kinda suck, the bb's don't have much mass, the "slugs" it comes with are meh. I ended up buying a 1/4 inch high strength steel rod and cut it into small pieces a little bit bigger than the "slugs". 1/4 won't fit in the 6mm barrel, but if you have a dreamed and a decent drill you can sand off a small amount and they'll slide right through. @@prestongarvey2285 I have thought about getting a rifled barrel. I've also thought about a railgun, but they're on another level than I can do monetarily speaking (I have a lot of other ... hobbies). I've thought about rifling the projectiles themselves on a lathe, I've thought about making a dart like projectile like you're talking about, but from some of the videos I've seen while researching things, If they hit something relatively hard the projectile will break or deform. Best thing I can think of right now is to 3D print a sort of harness with fins for the projectile that you can just slip over a pre-made and smaller diameter projectile, you'd still be replacing the "sleeve" or "harness" or whatever after every shot though, and I don't own a 3D printer. I did try to glue a q-tip cut in half to the back of a couple projectiles, to create drag and keep it stable, but the acceleration happens so fast that the glue wouldn't hold the q-tip. If I had a drill press I would drill a hole in the back of them and jam the stick from the q-tip into it. It's not like the thing isn't accurate or anything though. I shot it like 30 times from like 15ft at this piece of wood and it was basically like a 2 inch grouping, even hit the exact same spot more than a few times, and that's with the projectiles just tumbling through the air. It's a trade off either way, gotta find what you like I suppose. If you make it more accurate you'd have to cut weight off of the projectile somehow which equals less kinetic energy and damage, so for me it's about trying to find that perfect balance that is also affordable/not time consuming.

@@Adeptus_Artes What they give you, or at least what I got and I see laying on the table next to the DC supply in this video, is basically a bootleg ZVS (Mazzilli) driver, or basically a resonant royer oscillator. They want you to use batteries because such a circuit in its basic state will attempt to source high amperage very quickly, and if it cannot receive it the circuit can go into lockup and blow up from too much current into a shorted switch. If you use a lab supply like this, you have to make sure the supply is always on first, then an on switch is engaged. That's assuming the supply is even able to cooperate with the ZVS driver properly. Batteries don't have this issue. The problem is since there is no regulation whatsoever, the actual output voltage of the device is going to entirely depend on the input voltage at the time. Output will increase or decrease along with the input voltage. Cheap fake 18650 batteries will work of course, but they won't last as long as higher quality cells. Since they are supplying a crappy ZVS driver to begin with, it's easy enough to just make a better one yourself with some small improvements to prevent latch-up.
