So this is actually not a Railgun but is actually a Gauss rifle or Coilgun. Railguns use an actual rail which the projectile is in contact with while it's accelerating, this allows them to launch projectiles much faster, but they wear out very quickly. A coil gun as the one Matt has uses shifting electromagnetic fields to "pull" the projectile forward, once in motion it won't be making contact with the barrel.

Either way, why do you think it's a requirement to talk about political topics when making gun videos? Some people just like to come and watch unadulterated destruction or see interesting and unique guns (this video is a perfect example) that most people don't have or have ever even seen. I myself, as I'm sure many others are, already well aware of anti gun arguments and the push for new anti gun laws. I go to other channels for that info and content (Colion Noir is a really good one for example). I go to Garand Thumb and Demo Ranch and KY Ballistics for fun content, not for politics

So aperture uses caseless ammo

Built a real one a few years back. The rails were made of copper bussbar. The projectile was a slug of beryllium copper with a plastic sabot and the pusher was made of aluminum. Several racks of maxwell labs HV capacitors plus some big spark gap switches. Was awfully inefficient and the rails needed to be cleaned and adjusted after 4 shots. It is essentially a super high speed linear motor.

You survived another colab with Kentucky demolition. I really love and appreciate Scott's natural inclination for destruction... The tornado... God bless you fellas 😎

The objective in the manufacturer's site is to be non-lethal. Still, any slight imbalance of the projectile would mean you'd end up with a serrated disk shorting your coils and potentially making the gun go kaput.

Big difference between a railgun and a coilgun. A coilgun is what you have, it uses coils to propell iron or steel objects that will fit in the barrel. A railgun uses 2 parralel rails to launch iron or steel projectiles, causing damage to said rails every time it is fired.

bruh I was about 2 put the same comment... a coil gun can (dry fire) without a projectile cuz the many coils make the electromagnetic field. the rail gun has one negativity charged rail and the projectile its self connects the 2 rods making the field (Lorentz force)

Honestly, as far as "Less lethal" weaponry goes, this gun might be the best option around; Good fire rate, it (probably) won't kill anyone, it is easy and fast to reload, and I bet taking a full 25 rounds in "shotgun" mode will hurt enough to deter just about anyone. It just might be the perfect home-defense weapon.

With the heavy-pull rubber band, steel shot (about half the size of a playing marble) will easily go through um.. stuff. Reloading is atrocious though. I'd rather redecorate my ceiling with a twelve gauge as a deterrent than have to risk anybody getting hurt by anything, including me. Besides, "pfft, thwack" no matter how genuinely dangerous isn't going to scare anybody off. :(

Seems like a coilgun, rather than a railgun, the difference being that the sudden electrical capacitance discharge causes an acceleration, via lorentz force, which requires a non-ferrous metal to accomplish. Coilgun uses a rapid succession of electromagnetic coils to pull a ferrous object up to speed

@@savthedon LOL. Well, basically soldering a series of capacitors that were used to charge the flash on a disposable camera. I also used the charging circuit and button to charge the series of capacitors. Used some kind of thick straw or plastic tube and wound an electro-magnetic coil around it coming from the capacitors. When you short the capacitors / close the circuit, it will grab the ball / nail or whatever and instantly discharge it through the coil. I'm sure my terminology is completely off, there were some plans online that I used like 10 years ago.

I wonder why they don't just have some kind of grips on one side of the square firing chamber (barrel?) which spins the projectiles like a frisbee as it accelerates. You'd definitely lose some velocity converting some linear to angular momentum, but the gains to stability would increase accuracy dramatically. Not to mention flipping over in flight like a coin toss would cause tons of drag, so keeping the projectile going through the air always edge first might also increase the overall range even if the muzzle velocity is lower.

what i like about this channel is that it has the quality and vibe of highschoolers with money.

This isn't a railgun. Its a Gauß Rifle. The difference: - Railguns use 2 parallel rails of conductive material. The projectile sits in a carrier between the rails. The Rails are then supplied with a massive spike of electric current. The traveling current generates a magnetic field that runs in a lengthwise plane between the rails. The projectile or sabot through which the current also flows also generate a field. The force generated, called the Lorentz Force, is what accelarates the projectile to over Mach 6. The sheer speed of the projectile causes a pressure differential that superheats the surrounding air through cavitation, leaving behind a plume of plasma that collapses in its wake and also igniting any small particles in its path. - Gauß Rifles use a series of high winding count copper coils that fire in series to accelarate a ferromagnetic projectile. They use simple magnetism as their accelarating force, hence why the projectile has to be ferromagnetic. Contrary to how the railgun works, the projectile or sabot for this type of gun is never exposed to the working current, as this would spell disaster. The projectile would weld itself to the coils. Each Gun Type comes with unique challenges, as railguns quickly deteriorate their rails and run the risk of welding themselves shut, while Gauß rifles can LITERALLY backfire by accidentally catching and firing the projectile back the way it came if the timing on the coils is off

@@apocalypsecat1665 Thats NOT how a Railgun works XD There is no such thing as a "plasma explosion" in a railgun. What you're thinking of are so called "Raven Guns". A prototype weapon built around using superheated plasma to ignite the propellant in a traditional cannon more evenly and thus achieve better accuracy, range and tighter shot2shot variance. Railguns dont use or generate plasma in their firing, all their acceleration comes from electromagnetic forces generated by the extreme currents the rails are being subjected to. The fireball you see is the projectiles sheer speed igniting any sort of dust in the air around itself as it leaves the barrel

@@Bitt3rh0lz IDK if you're using it for effect or because of native language issues, but the standard in English is to expand out to 'Gauss', people often won't know what you mean if you use ß

It might be more powerful when not in burst mode. It probably has caps it charges and on a single shot it can dump all the power into it where with a burst it only dumps a small bit per shot.

I feel if the ammo wasn't discs, it may have been far deadlier. Overall still an awesome weapon. Love the "shotgun" feature, it sounds like a beast, especially at 5 rounds a pull.

If it has coils only, it's a coil gun. Rail guns have a pair of rails that the projectile sits between. The navy has some great videos of their big boy model they were testing but now mothballed.

If it really has coils around the barrel, that makes it a Gauss Gun or Coil Gun. Rail Guns operate by passing current from rail to rail through the projectile.
