Tensions rise as Russians move into country that fears it could be the next Ukraine

A Russian soldier ran up to a nun. Out of breath, he asked, “Please, may I hide under your skirt, I'll explain later.” The nun agreed. A moment later two military police ran up and asked: “Sister, have you seen a soldier?” The nun replied, “He went that way.” After the military police ran off, the soldier crawled out from under her skirt and said, “I can't thank you enough, Sister. You see, I don't want to go to Ukraine.” The nun said, “I understand completely.” The soldier added, “I hope I'm not rude, but you have a great pair of legs!” The nun replied, “If you had looked a little higher, you would've seen a great pair of balls too. I don't want to go to Ukraine either."

It occurred to me that if this were not Putin’s plan, he never would have allowed draft dodgers to go there. How easy would it have been for him to send his police to the borders and stop all of the men from leaving? He had weeks to do it. He knew where they were going. Do they think they escaped? No, Putin allowed it so he could then “annex” Georgia and conscript those men anyway. Also Kazakhstan. 100’s of thousands of ready made soldiers tricked into invading as a Trojan horse. Even with the best of intentions, giving them the benefit of the doubt, those men will fall in line with wives and families in Russia as hostages if they don’t follow orders🤷🏼‍♀️ most of them were born and raised under Putin and have that mentality already.

I definitely understand the concerns of Georgians. Even if 99.9% of Russians fleeing are genuine, against the war etc., the fear of the Russian government using this as terms for another ‘special operation’ is real. And sadly the assumption that 99.9% are genuine isn’t a good one, as I’ve seen many videos and stories of cars attempting to cross into border with the the “Z” symbol boldly plastered on their cars. Irony aside, concern remains. Although I also understand those fleeing genuinely. Many of those fleeing are backed into a corner. They understand what protesting will get them. And it’s not that protests aren’t happening at all in Russia, it’s just it seems they are snuffed out very quickly - I feel it’s more that there’s no leader to rally behind in Russia. Navalny, for example, is jailed. There is no clear leader, that I’m aware of, to provide hope for people there.

Offer them residency or citizenship on condition that they swear a public oath of allegiance to Georgia in the case of hostile action by any other nation. In other wars such events did happen and it did not go well for soldiers who had switched sides and then were captured by their former countrymen. An example was ethnic Irish who crossed into Mexico from the US and then joined the Patricios regiment in the Mexican army to fight against the US army in the Mexican-American war in the 1840's. Many of these men were captured by the US army and tried and executed as traitors by the US government of the time. Some people are the deciders (the brain -the elite), others are the laborers (legs), and yet others are the fighters (fist), and more. He writes that you would never expect the legs to think, but to follow the direction from the brain. Similarly, the Russian people should follow the directives of their leaders without question.

🚗🚙🚐🚲🚚 It takes a lot of courage to leave your home country and facing so much uncertainty abroad. Nobody wants to do it unless they have to, much like any other types of political refugees. Voting by leaving Russia with your feet is also good. And we, in the international community, needs to help Georgia handle this influx of people too, just like Poland with the Ukrainians.

I have read accounts from the end days of WW2 when soldiers used to inflict wounds on themselves in order to avoid having to engage in active combat and risk being killed in action. A horrible choice for someone to have to make, to swap the certainty of a serious wound for the neqr certainty of death in action. Such non-fatal wounds were known as million dollar wounds by soldiers anxious to survive the war.

I am hopefull. Because people have changed. Manipulating men into a war with slogans and heroic blah-blah is no longer so easy. People have learned and are tired of fighting and killing. In the case of the Russians, this is only too understandable. They have suffered, starved and are killed and died for Dictators for centuries. More than most other countries.
