Taiwan condemns China military drills as 'irrational provocations' | BBC News
Taiwan's defence ministry has condemned China's military exercises around the self-ruled island as "irrational provocations".
The drills come just three days after the inauguration of Taiwanese president William Lai, whom Beijing has labelled as a "separatist" and a "troublemaker".
Beijing, which has long claimed Taiwan, is performing the drills all around the main island, and the Taipei-controlled islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin.
A spokesperson for the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has called them a "strong punishment" for "separatist acts".

I don’t know what the guys talked about to deter: Taiwan's navy currently has only four submarines: two World War II-era vessels from the U.S. used for training and two bought from the Netherlands in the 1980s.

Historically, Taiwan has been governed by indigenous tribes, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Kingdom of Tungning, the Qing Dynasty, and Japan before becoming the Republic of China after World War II. Each regime's governance over Taiwan demonstrates that Taiwan's political status has been complex and not solely tied to China. People in Taiwan no one wants the war happened.

Why did every year before Covid 140 million Chinese went a broad to travel the world as tourists and nearly 140 million of them returned to China to live and work? Where do you think senior Taiwanese military servicemen, politicians, businessmen move to when they retire? Where do you think Taiwanese banks and institutions move their money and assets to whenever there is instability in Taiwan, you clown? Go to China and see if Chinese people there are oppressed. You British have an unelected hereditary king whom you, all your military members, politicians, judges and civil servants have to pledge personal allegiance to him and his family and you are calling people from other countries oppressed. Taiwan can't even exist economically without Mainland China. Nearly 50% of everything Taiwan produces goes to China. Taiwan is not economically viable without the Mainland. 80% have family members in the Mainland. Most Taiwanese can tell you exactly where their ancestors came from. Most of them came from Fujian Province, just across the Straight. Do you know who are oppressed? The people of Okinawa who have been protesting for decades for American troops to leave their Islands. They have seen 40% of all their arable land swallowed up by the US military. The indigenous people of Hawaii who have send their Islands invaded by American settlers and polluted and destroyed by the US navy. Both Okinawa and Hawaii used to be independent sovereign countries internationally recognized across the world until they got invaded and illegally annexed by the US and Japan in the late 19th century. Those are the people who are really being oppressed.

You know the U.S the one buying microchips now from Taiwan and Netherlands, right? United Nations Resolution 2758 resolved, politically, legally and procedurally, the issue of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the UN and international institutions. It completely blocked any attempt by anyone or any country to create 'two Chinas' or 'one China, one Taiwan'.”

First off, Taiwan is NOT a self-governing province of China. It is a province but has since 1949 been taken over by the Republic of China (ROC) when it had to flee there from mainland China after it was defeated by CCP. Taiwan in reality is the sovereign state of ROC. Secondly, the leaders in Taipei have to play to the tune of US which uses Taiwan as an anti-China card/ chess. Taiwan is a pawn in the US - China game. Both US and China know it; and Taiwan is trying to manage the situation as best it could.

What they don't tell you is that according to UN law, the waters around Taiwan are international waters. The US also sail their navy across the world the same way China does around Taiwan but of course they don't talk about that.

China is a broad term. Speak more specific, it is the CCP who is ruling China with an iron fist. How many Chinese have to die under the CCP that you realize you're being ruled by a criminal organization? Taiwan is the true legitimate government of the Chinese people.

Meanwhile the US is selling billion is arms to Taiwan, training up Thailand’s military, building new bases in the Philippines, selling nuclear submarines to Australia, patching things up between historic enemies like S Korea and Japan, and running joint exercises with all these nations + Sri Lanka, Singapore and New Zealand.

@@peterwang5272 If you want to talk about what's claimed and what belongs to which side, then technically speaking the mainland is owned by Taiwan and the PRC is an illegitimate government.
Such blockade will only work if Taiwan doesn’t have missile defense capabilities or such capabilities destroyed. Otherwise, those ships are practically sitting ducks. Just ask Putin.

Well Russia lost 11 warships from it's 417. And in 2023 alone they produced 30 new warships. In 2022 it was only 3. So their navy is actually growing...
