Taiwan: 'China is preparing for war,' says former Taiwanese navy captain
China's military has finished two days of military drills around Taiwan in the greatest escalation in tension across the Taiwan Strait since 2022.
China characterised the two day drills as "punishment", while Taiwan insists it won't be cowed by Chinese pressure.

Well, Russia didn't invade. They were expecting a surrender like Crimea takeover in 2014. When the Ukrainian military started attacking Russians, they were caught off guard and hence Russia faced its initial loss. This is why Russia was never prepared for a war. They never expected Ukraine to strike back. All those old tanks were for the show of force but quickly fell against Ukrainian anti tank regiments.

Taiwan is part of China according to both the PRC and ROC Constitutions. In the last never-ending civil war, the losing side fled to the island of Taiwan in China, and no ceasefire agreement has been signed since then.

China fought the United Nations right off the bat. While doing that, China proceeded to invade Taiwan, took some territories. but, History is never anyone's strong suit anyways.

The U.S who is on the other side of the map and its allies sends warships and spy planes to China's border and area almost everyday. Yet for some reason some people still believe the western propaganda that it is China who is the aggressor lol. The few times China sent their ships into the middle of the pacific ocean the U.S were already up at arms saying the China threat is very serious what more if China was doing what the U.S is doing and building bases all around it? Any country with a capability to build their defense would do so in the face of the threat and provocation the U.S and their allies are doing.

Nationalist reasons to boost popularity with the Chinese people now when growth is slowing down, crush the biggest role model for what a free market democratic China can look like that also performs better than mainland China (which is threatening the CCP narrative), get better access to uninterrupted shipping lanes which China kind of lacks today, get access to the Taiwanese semi-conductor and microchip industry which is the leading and most cutting edge worldwide but also put pressure on the US and drive out America influence in the Asia-pacific region. However I just feel that the cost massively outweighs the benefits for China, because a invasion of Taiwan would essentially make China a pariah state, freeze Chinese access to global financial systems and halt more than half of China’s exports due to the west sanctioning the hell out of export dependent China (which would hurt China more than Russia) - not to mention that a amphibious invasion of Taiwan which is a top 20 world military power would probably be the deadliest war since WW2 because the entire island is a fortress and essentially 1 big mega city (Urban warfare is extremely difficult and deadly)
