Tell Me About Yourself Interview Question ✓ (How To Introduce Yourself In An Interview)

Tell me about yourself interview question was one of my very first videos 5 years ago. It benefited 5 million people but I always thought I could make that video much better with better answers, tips, and tricks. So, that's what I did with this much-improved version...

How you introduce yourself in a job interview is extremely important as it allows you to set the tone for the rest of the interview. This is where you can have a first impression that will last.
This question can be asked in a different manner;
- Introduce yourself
- Tell me more about yourself
- Tell us more about yourself

    To everyone who is new to this channel and don't know much about Deniz : I have passed 3 interviews successfully before with my very limited job interview experience, thanks to his value bomb videos. He definitely knows what he is talking about and it works ! It is like getting inside information from the HR department. So, I suggest you to dig into his previous videos and apply them right away. Don't be shy about applying to jobs and having interviews as much as possible. That will help you to gain some "interview muscles". Also as he mentioned, there are so many fake job openings out there, so there is nothing wrong to have some fake interviews as an applicant. Imagine that as window shopping and an opportunity learn. Thank you Deniz from the very bottom of my heart ❤

    Hi Rajdip, I am humbled. I made a lot of mistakes in my early career (almost 20 years ago) and the vast majority of them were easily preventable if I had an older brother/a mentor who could guide me. Now that I am “old enough”, I am just trying my best to do it for others who are in a similar condition as I was. Always glad to see it’s working. Thanks for the kind words.

    First impression is the lasting impression. Most times after I spend several hours preparing for and going to an interview, following all the criteria to the letter, I get crickets. The interviewing company doesn’t bother to let me know that they didn’t select me, much less why, even if I call and ask politely for status. Sometimes, many weeks later, I will get an emailed form letter telling me that they have selected another candidate and thanking me for my time. Actually, this is better than having no response at all. Society has lost their manners.

I have seen it over, and over and over and over again! Soooo many talk about what you need to say and act, but they ignore the main point, which DO NOT MAKE THE HIRING MANAGER FEARING FOR HIS JOB. Hi Deniz, Glad to see you back and thank you for sharing your experience and advices. I am a localisation program manager and have been working in a medium size localisation agency for the past 10 years. Now I am looking for a similar role at the top companies in the localisation industry or as a localisation manager on the client side. I failed in some interviews where the interviewer feed-backed to me that I sound more like a senior project manager to her than a program manager. My question is what are the key difference of these two roles? how do I find out my true level of experience in the industry? I started as a junior PM in my current company, then been promoted to senior PM after 5 years. Now as the program manager for the past 5 years leading several different teams. But my experience is all from the same company for the last 10 years. How do I gauge my own level of experience and how do I demonstrate that I do have the program manager experience to the big companies? I am confident and capable of managing complex localisation projects and have experience in team/people management too but I just don’t know how to bring them to words that hints the level of seniority. Thank you very much in advance!

  • @DenizSasal

    @DenizSasal

    2 жыл бұрын

    “What are the differences between these two and how do I find where I fit?” In an ideal world where all the companies follow a single project management school of thought, ie; PMI - it would be a very simple single-track career ladder; Portfolio > Program > Project. You’d have a Portfolio Manager (the most senior), a Program Manager, then a Project Manager (the least senior). The problem arises when we start introducing common roles to the project management field, ie; Manager, Senior Manager, Director, Senior Director, VP, etc. Essentially, you end up having two separate vertical career tracks. Now, is a Project Director more senior than a Program Manager or the other way around because Program includes multiple projects? Or is a Portfolio Manager more senior than Program Director? It gets even more confusing when you consider the budget. For example, for small budget projects, companies just bundle them up and assign a Portfolio Manager which is a very big title but remember this; the person who headed the development of International Space Station had a title of just “Project Manager”... The head of a USD 150 billion dollar project had the title of just project manager... To sum it up, my suggestion is you be open to all the roles relevant to project management. You’ll never know what titles the companies assign to what PM roles. You present your experience then let them guide you on where your skills and experience belong in their own PM structure.

  • @yufengzhu8290

    Thank you so much! This really clears off my doubts and help me to see two different verticals in the management world. I feel that so many opportunities are open to me now. I was also trying to find out the differences from the offered salary range too. The higher the more senior I suppose.

    Hi Deniz, I honestly can't thank you enough for all the advice I've had from you over the years. However, I'm currently working for an Int'l NGO (One you've said you don't particularly like) in Cameroon, Africa as a comms officer though I just finished my masters in Financial Journalism from City, University London (your alma mater). Sometimes I feel like I've settled especially because I'd have loved to be working for Bloomberg now. Do you think I should stay here? If no, how do I rekindle the passion to go looking for that dream job, especially if I'm almost already financially comfortable?

  • @DenizSasal

    @DenizSasal

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Richard, as I grow older and older I seem to meet more people who truly enjoy working for NGOs and they are incredibly passionate about the cause of the NGO. I respect that but I cannot easily empathize. I don’t understand why to make a career out of it for very little salary when you can just make 5x more at MNCs and donate what you are comfortable with. Those NGOs need funds more than your labor. I’ve never seen an NGO running out of employees to hire but I’ve seen plenty running out of funds that they could put to good use. I am also passionate about a lot of causes - and in fact, almost all my profits from my LIG program go to the education of young girls in Nigeria (a cause that I became passionate about when I visited Lagos for a client work about 10 years ago). But I would never go work for the NGO that I am donating to. So, I am not judging, I respect your choices, but I would not follow that path.

  • @DenizSasal

    @DenizSasal

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Yufeng, yes I see value in all of them. I wouldn't train both on PMI and Prince 2 though - at least not at the same time. PMI provides you with a wonderful PM framework. It is so easy to follow and more importantly easy to customize to your specific needs whereas Prince 2 is a methodology (not a framework) with very limited customization options (for beginners). In addition, there are many more PMI-trained PM professionals (CAPMs and PMPs) out there so it makes it much easier for you to speak the same PM language with them, using the same terminology that everybody understands. It does make a big difference. Hope it helps ;)

    What an impressive career. I’d say a role at Big 4 is still possible as long as you consider SME (Subject Matter Expert) roles. Otherwise, you’re probably at the age of a Partner and it’s highly unlikely they’d consider your profile.

    Hi Deniz, I met this channel few years ago via eksisozluk and it helped me great to land a job abroad, so first thank you so much! My question is about consultancy. I have several years of Marketing experience and I do believe I can work as consultant, however there are few things I'm unsure about. First, I don't know where to start as many of the roles I've seen asks for some consultancy experience. Second, I have some limited observation on what consultant life looks like. Can you please shed some light on these two? I know that you don't really go deep about consultancy in this channel but I hope your experience could help me :) Thanks in advance!

    Hi Ceyda, the management consultancy field that I have experienced for almost a decade is very different compared to the field of marketing consultancy. It’s a completely different field with a different scope of work. While I have never worked for a marketing consultancy, I did work with them hand in hand in many client projects. I have known them to be extremely creative, relaxed, and full of very colorful characters. I always looked forward to those client projects where we engaged a marketing consultancy to help us with a few work packages. They always brought a bit of “sunshine” with them - almost irrespective of the firm or the country.

Yet not lost my hope for the best to come. Please suggest.

    I am afraid I can't provide any material advice here based on what you shared. It's too generic. It could be a million reasons why it didn't work out. It requires a back and forth discussion to understand where things went wrong and I am afraid don't offer coaching/consulting services. Having said that, if you're failing interviews at hiring manager rounds, it may be an indication that you are either not a good fit to the organization in terms of your character or they are simply not convinced of your skills. Since you failed at the last rounds with 4 different organizations, it does feel more likely that it's a skills and experience issue rather than a character issue. I know it's not an "a-ha!" answer but this is the best I can do with what you shared.

    Without knowing all the details, I’d say let’s shake the tree a little bit and see what falls down. Approach the leadership and ask for more responsibilities (not a change of role, just more responsibilities). Maybe they have something nice for you in-store. Leaving for another company should only be the last resort here. Managing your career is a bit like managing your marriage. You have to share your thoughts and feedback whenever there are issues before they become problems. You don’t go changing your spouse at the first issue you face. Similarly, try to work out your issues with the leadership before they become problems.

    Hi Deniz, Your videos are priceless and insightful. Thank you for sharing ! Could you please enlight me about the job transition for qualified and experienced immigrants. Employers in their new country (North America) seem not really consider their previous experience. Is starting again from entry-level or junior positions the only solution? Thanks

    Hi Abdeladeem, I think you’re referring to the challenges new Canadian immigrants face. While I am not a Canadian citizen (decided it was not the best option for me and my family), I am a permanent resident in the country so I do hear about the challenges faced by newcomers very well. In fact, some of my beloved LIG members and subscribers here are also Canadian PR holders like me. In the majority of the cases, the battle is lost way before the immigrants take their flight to Canada. While this may not be you, many newcomers arrive in Canada without strong enough skills that differentiate them from the unemployed local talent. They don’t have bad profiles but are not necessarily better than the available local talent either. From an employer’s perspective, it’s more advantageous to hire a local talent who speaks native English and comes with local experience. This is true not just in Canada but almost anywhere, ie; Singapore, London, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Istanbul, etc. This then gets exacerbated by the fact that they don't really know how to job hunt which is understandable but still a big problem. That's one of the reasons why I created my LIG program. In one of our meetups in Vancouver, I met about 50 of my subscribers and LIG members, some of them were newcomers to the country. The vast majority of those newcomers were holding amazing positions already. Some achieved relative quick success because of my LIG program and some others because they’ve done their homework before they came to the country; worked on their skills, certifications had already worked for prestigious MNCs, and as a result, they found no trouble transferring to other great organizations in Canada. In short, what you need is first empathy; put yourself in the shoes of hiring managers and local employers and then give them what they want, meaning; build your own profile towards those requirements and then make sure your profile is better than the local talent. When you do that, trust me, you’ll be offered great roles with great pay. I also suggest you join my LIG program when the enrollments open (don't know when it'll be open again) as it'll accelerate your progress tremendously.

    I am of the opinion that we should all step up when the business/our team/company needs us - even working until midnight as long as it is temporary. I remember many days during my management consulting career where I skipped an entire night and worked non-stop for 48 hours (or more), ie; client presentations, deliverables, frequent flights across the world to meet clients, etc. However, it was always temporary. One or two weeks of intense work every few months then back to normality. I think that’s the key. If you don’t go back to your normal working hours, it’s just a matter of time before you burn out. That’s obviously not good for you nor for your employer. If that’s the case with you, you may need to work on your skills to say “no”. It’s an underrated skill. Being able to say no to more tasks than you can handle, long hours, late evening zoom meetings is an essential skill you have to master. You’ll have to be assertive but not aggressive. You will not lose your job just because you say no to these requests. If anything you’ll lose your job if you say yes to everything and are not able to deliver your promises.
