If you're in America and want to be a server but have no experience, doesn't matter, they are so desperate for workers right now with so many people collecting unemployment you have a great shot at getting the job, I did and have zero experience but it sounds harder than it is and the more you learn the more confident you will be so go for it!!

I would suggest that you familiarize yourself with the menu at the place you want to work for. Let them know when you go for your interview that you have studied the menu; it shows them that you are serious about the job and it will impress them. It worked for me, they looked at each other and smiled when I told them I had memorized the menu.

And don't lie and say you have experience if you don't because they will quickly see that you don't. I was just honest and told them I had no experience but was very willing to learn.

I currently work at a high end Steakhouse, I have most recently started working towards my Sommelier Certification, twenty years plus experience in all facets of the restaurant industry...I've cooked, peeled shrimp and shucked oysters...baked with pastry chefs...worked lead sautee... broil and fry station...did about 8 years in the kitchen before I stepped onto the floor...worked my way up into fine dining...mainly Steakhouse fare here in Houston Texas...but wanting to go and see the world after a few more years, may find you for a job !

Joseph, I am all about travelling and seeing new places and meeting new people! One of the perks our job allows us! I have to warn you though that in Europe and the rest of the world you might not like it so much! I prefer USA because in the States you don't have to work 8-9 hours every day just because they pay you a monthly salary.... Plus in USA since you are working in high end stake house you are making money! The money in Europe or the rest of the world won't compare to that! I will suggest you travel first within the States! Miami, Las Vegas, New York, Frisco or Sand Diego! I can recommend all those cities if you land a job at a high end stake house ...that means money...and a lot of fun as well :)

Okay! You are beginner! Get the knowledge and practice the skills at home! Then go and impress a managerm because noone will expect that from a beginner

I was very stressed until you ask the Champagne... I worked in the vendanges in France to make Champagne so I'll pretty much rock that question! By the way cousin! I always made it a priority in my life to work in the source of food industry such as farms for veggies or Berber mountains for Goat cheese and meat in North africa. Do you think it's a definite plus to find a way to slip that during an interview... Cuz I prioritized that so much (as my ultimate goal is to make my own restaurant that's also a farm) to maximize food freshness .. People say it's cool but I noticed that I lack at many things that my co-workers (when I was a sous-chef) were way more competent in other areas (not food making though cuz I just have it as a natural talent) If that's confusing as a question. It's just that I know I can make food now, so I decided to take on "service" jobs to keep gathering funds, but also to learn further about what makes a good restaurant work Many thanks and sorry for not being concise nor precize but English is far from being my first language ... Nor is it even my third

I am sorry for confusing you. The main point is to learn everything you can learn for the company that owns the restaurant, get the menu and learn as much as you could about it, and then your positive body launguage and smile will do the rest! Of course, learning how to answer properly the standard questions will help as well. Good luck!
