Teeth Grinding & Reflux Heartburn

Did you know there is a strong link between reflux (gastro-oesophageal reflux - GORD or GERD), aka. Heartburn and
Teeth Grinding and Clenching?
Yes you bet!
High acidity that goes up the oesophagus can trigger grinding and clenching behaviour.
Strength and compression force of clenching and grinding can be as high as 125kg to the back molars and 25kg to the front teeth.
So then it means the jaw joints are also exposed to high compressive force during grinding and clenching.
And the worse part is;
jaw problem will probably become symptomatic at a very late stage of the grinding and clenching behaviour. It means only after many years, it would appear as jaw problem.
SO EARLY treatment of the reflux will definitely help save your teeth but also your jaw from getting injured.
Splint is often prescribed by dentists to protect teeth from wearing down or cracking but it often still does not resolve the WHY you are grinding and clenching in the first place.
So seek professional assistance at the early stage!
In this instance, acid neutraliser such as proton pumping inhibitor (PPI), prescribed by medical doctor may be the first place to start.
This is so that it does not get to those unwanted consequences such as teeth problems and jaw problems in the first place.
Happy Rehab!
