That proves how arbitrary luxury watch market is. That was AP going after Richard Mille. Richard Mille look like plastic toys to most people, yet there are people paying 6 or 7 digits for them. As a wise man once said, if you paid more than $40 for watch, you’re not paying for it to tell time.

Those watches want to be "recogniseable" not beautiful. The person showing it off wants you to unmistakably recognize it as the awfully expensive piece of garbage design it is. The person buying it for his collection would risk his "investment" a lot because this kind of flashy in-your-face drug-dealer bling is not going to stand the test of time IMHO.

@@kiatography22 True. However even Kevin couldn't _necessarily_ get one of the 500 or so green 5711s from an AD. He'd might be in the running, so to speak. But if each AD is only getting _one_ of those he could easily lose out to another Mr Big Patek collector. As for buying pre-owned, he's one of those guys who could reasonably afford to buy one (I'm guessing?) But then, there might not be too many offered for sale any time soon? It was a mini sensation when one came up at auction recently. But that was apparently sourced from an AD that had just ceased trading - which is a kind of unusual situation. 99.9% of the carefully picked guys who get one of those surely won't be in any hurry to sell? (Kevin shouldn't feel too bad though - the blue one looks better. It is purely the numerical rarity which makes the green one such a hot ticket.)

I'm sure Kevin is absolutely happy with his approach to the hobby and his collection, but it is striking to me how different his viewpoint is on why he wants certain pieces. Especially that 5711. His reasoning for liking the watch started with something like "When you enter a room you'll be the envy of everyone there...". That is SO different from how I pick things, which is primarily based around my personal gut reaction to an object. Great if other people share that appreciation, but if I started buying watches based on what I believe other people would like/be envious of, I doubt I'd end up with a collection that I myself actually enjoy. Surely makes a lot more sense when viewing it as an investment, but not what I want out of my watches.

Great video Teddy. That JLC 185 is breathtaking! I agree that the two-tone explorer is polarizing. I don't HATE it but I would go with the classic for my own wrist. Imagine the security you need for the JLC thought lol. I would need a moat and fire-breathing dragons to feel like that piece was safe at night.

I loved how he spoke his verdict (death sentence) over the two tone explorer and over the orange hand of the ExplorerII…he just does not care wether it’s iconic Rolex or not! Thank you for that! And yes he is an Investors and that’s why he hates to loose money…so every watch is an investment for him or reminds him of investments or both…😂

Love the channel and I believe Teddy does a great job in making fine watchmaking known in very easy, effective terms. Mr O’Leary, as most comments suggest as well, doesn’t really appreciate watchmaking for the love of the craft. Point intended, everybody would be happy of seeing its piece appreciating in value, but this cannot be the main reason for buying a timepiece.

I sold watches for a long time. For years and years you could walk into the shop I worked at in Newport Beach and buy pretty much anything. Want a Hulk, no worries, I have three of them. Nautilus, no sweat. Do you want the annual calendar, GMT, or just the "standard" one? You're looking for a SS Daytona? For the most part, we always had the black and white dial available to clients that had bought multiple watches from us. Sea Dweller? Yep. Lange? We have about 30 of them for you to chose from. And every single one of them was sold at retail. Never ever did we mark up a watch. Those were the days.

@1:56 I have a ~19.5 cm (7 5/8"in )wrist and one of the watches I find wearing a lot is an old Seiko A904-5000 gold colored which is about 34~mm? I do catch people looking at it on my wrist more than when I am wearing a 40mm watch. The bracelet is also almost too small and barely fits , but it adds to the fun of wearing a watch that might not be a 'normal' size watch. Thanks for the great videos! Take care.
