Tremendous champion. One of finest ever. He was the professor in that ring. And he suffered "losses" on his record that were absolutely criminal. The first fight with Ramirez in France. The "draw" with Chavez. Add the De La Hoya fight in there as well.

I've been following the sport of boxing since December of 1995 when Mike Tyson fought Buster Mathis jr, it was the first fight that I watched, I've been hooked ever since. I've watched current fighters, I've watched fighters from the past as well. Actually I prefer watching old school fighters, Marvin Hagler and Joe Calzaghe are two of my favorites to watch even though Joe Calzaghe only retired in 2009 so Joe is definitely not an old school fighter. With that being said Pernell Whitaker is by far the most skilled fighter I've ever whitensed, I have a hard time believing anyone could beat Pernell fair in his prime. Pernell was just to slick and aware of his surroundings at all times, his rig IQ was unmatched, in my opinion Pernell Whitaker truly was the pound for pound best boxer to ever live.

Lou Duva what exactly did Oscar do to “clearly” win that fight? “Sweet Pea” had a higher connect rate on overall punches (40% v. 34%) and a much higher connect rate on jabs (41% v. 23%). On top of that, Pernell scored a knock down against Oscar and had Oscar so thoroughly confused that he (Oscar) switched to a south paw stance at couple of junctures in that fight, trying to figure out something with Pernell. Oscar got outclassed and schooled and he also got a gift in the form of that decision from the judges.

A question for Teddy: how great does he think Roy Jones Jr was in his prime? I think he is the best fighter by far of my lifetime and would have beaten anyone in history in a best of ten at middleweight and super-middle. I'm including Robinson at middle (Roy being the bigger guy) in that equation. He could do anything. He never got hit. He had the fastest hands of any fighter in history above the lower weight divisions. He was as perfect an athlete as I've seen in any sport. He knew nothing he'd face in the ring would ever be as hard as the four-hour daily training sessions his dad put him through as a kid.

Terrible news. Very sad. Pernell Whitaker was one of the greats, no doubt. I was hit by a car once and was saved by landing in soft, deep mud. I was hit by a car on a motorcycle another time and would have died had I not been wearing a helmet. Be careful around cars, people!

Pernell was the 85 Bears, Mayweather was the Patriots of the 2000's managed to win, Canelo is the 94 49ers too much offense. Chavez was the Raiders of 80 and 83 always wildcard but would win. De La hoya was the Cowboys make it to the championship win and sometimes lose. Pac Man was the Steelers wins a lot loses very few.

Never forget when Whittaker boxed the ears off Azumha Nelson when Nelson made the ill fate of jumping up to lightweight to take on Pernell. Pernell made it look easy against Nelson who also was a legend and a savage of a fighter. Plus he was robbed against The Great julio Cesar Chavez in 93. (R.I.P) Pernell.
