    Great to see potential problems and issues. Shit happens, and at least I can see how the small issues were solved here. The chain tensioner here (single spark?) is A LOT easier to get to than on my G650GS (twin spark). I'm not going to touch it unless I have to...

    holly shit and I thought adjusting the valves on my KTM was hard. I think I will be paying BMW to adjust my valve on the Sertao. Thanks for the video, I like learning as much about my bikes as I can just in case I am in some far away place and have to do it myself. That was one scary valve job. I love riding but hate working on the bikes.

    The engine shouldn't be turned over with the tensioner removed. Line up the cams before taking the 22mm bolt out

    +ItsFriscoBaby Any chance you can provide more detail on why you shouldn't turn it over with the tensioner removed? I know the manual also has a vague warning about the same (which i missed).

  • @ItsFriscoBaby

    @ItsFriscoBaby

    +Cody Bishop It's bad practice to turn the engine with the chain in place and not tensioned. All he has to do is line up the marks then take the tensioner out. By rotating it without tension you could have the chain come off the bottom pulley (can be a disaster to put back on. He also ignores this when taking the cams out. Without the tensioner keeping the chain guide in place the chain can damage it (rare enough but happens) Basically there are some risks with rotating it without the tensioner and since it's completely unnecessary you shouldn't do it.

    The BMW valve-clearance adjuster, No. 11 7 501, should save removing the cams and cam assemblies. Does anyone have pictures/video of this tool, and/or drawings on making one? (Pictures in my downloaded service manual are weak.)

    Great video. There isn't any easy way to do most things on the F650 engine. After taking the exhaust off to change the air filter, I knew I was in for some heartache doing a valve adjustment! Thanks for the knowledge!

  • @johannese.4927

    +E Linzmeyer idk what you did... but there is no need to remove the exhaust to remove the airfilter on the f650... the filter is in the airbox (obv.), just beside the battery.... takes only two screws to remove it...

    good vid but your somewhat of a noob, you should just remove the cams and then pull the chain up and use a coat hanger or something to hold it up and keep it from coming off the bottom gear. that zip ty technique is lame and then the cams are all in your way. this is almost the exact procedure for adjusting the valves on the KTM four stroke dirt bikes just a little different shim and bucket, it is not that hard once you do it once and way worth saving the $150 shop price !!!

    Seems way over engineered, to have to do it that way, just to much to do just to get the shims out. BTW just a thought, the Suzuki GS500 uses a tool that could help, if made for this motor, seeing they are some what similar in shim type, not saying it will work, but one may, if made right ? Have a question, is the tensor hydraulic operated, somthing like a lifter, say in a car ? Don't anything about these, and I skipped parts of the video..lol Just being honest... Thanks, yl

    Is this a how not to do it video? Damn those pesky torque settings, just snug it up!

  • @captlarry-3525

    @captlarry-3525

    3 жыл бұрын

    when and if you have been a mecanic a long time, you develop a feel for torque, and in most cases torque values are based on fastener size ( and if not, you have been a mechanic a long time..and so you read manuals and note the exceptions ( like those pesky one use head bolts in VW diesels)... So if you ask said mechanic to torque something to 14 or 30 or 90 ft pounds.. by feel..and then check him with your torque wrench. chances are damn good he has done it with-in the acceptable variation. Extending this to hitting the torque values using an L shaped allen wrench.. well lets hope it really isnt critical.

    Sorry but I am not impressed at all with this guys methods. I did watch the video and certainly learned some things on what NOT to do. No wonder he lost camchain timing! I did my valve adjustment for the first time and it was easier than what this guy made it seem, a bit complicated but if you are careful and patient it is doable. Now why the factory made it such a PITA to start with, I have no idea. I think it was to discourage owners from working on their own bike and to just take it to the dealer and pay a fortune. Thankfully these bikes hold their valve dimensions a long time.
