Valve shim adjustment on BMW F650 GS - method without removing cam chain tensioner
Checking/adjusting the valves on the Rotax is a great way to learn some basics of DIY maintenance.

I watch this video x 3 times at least every time valve check time comes around... Thankfully, not required yet on my G twin spark. Very watchable video, accurate description & great voice over. I have to say: please do more 650GS stuff if you still have the bike! Cheers.

Awesome video your a life saver.! I just bought a Ds650 Race Quad same engine as what you have and it won’t cold start but starts up fine when the engine is warm I’m about to adjust my valves as I’m sure my intake valves are way out of adjustment. Appreciate the video.

Great video, especially for those models where the camchain tensioner is also hard to access... Does this method rely on gradually pushing in the tensioner piston (thus forcing oil out of it)? Because that's what seems to have happened to mine, the cam chain is very loose after reinstalling the camshafts and the tensioner is retracted. Is there also a way to get the tensioner to move out by increasing oil pressure with cranking by a drill or by pushing in gear? Otherwise the chain slaps like mad and there massive freeplay between the camshafts if that makes sense

Of course I'd credit your video - on-screen and in audio commentary. As I will with Nate's longer video if permission is given. It's amazing how different is the top-end layout of the bike above the cyl-head cover on the CS version. I put my vids up on UToob as well as Vimeo. Regards, AL

Yes, you can get access to them exactly the same way.

Did you push back the cam chain tensioner? My chain under such tension, i cant lift out the intake cam.

Yes, nicely shot video - & in HD widescreen 264. Great. May I use a clip of it in my forthcoming F650 CS 'Scarver' variant model valve clearance check video ? Hope so. AL in s.e. Spain

Thanks for the comment. Probably fine with that as long as you reference my vid. Is your video going to be on youtube as well?

im wondering how could you move out cam shafts so easily. I tried it today and timing chain is very tight. I could not move up the shafts at all. It seems i have to remove the chain tensioner :(

Late answer, but it i had the same problem. I ended up taking off the sprocket on one of the cams, that was easier than removing the chain tensioner.

No chance of the timing chain coming off of the crankshaft sprocket?

Paul Standaert If you are gingerly with it I don't think it is a huge concern. But I'm not sure what kind of clearance is down there.

This seems practical, but I've heard Andy from Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions warn in his KZread video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJmn2qV7lq3IiZc.html) that if you remove the camshaft after you've installed your new shims, the valve clearances are likely to be different again. Like that, you'll be busy for ages.
