Tech Talk: Chain & Sprockets
In this Tech Talk, Carl explains and even helps clear up some misconceptions with sprocket sizes and issues that the XR650L is known to have with its counter shaft sprocket. If you're new to the world of motorcycles, this is a great video to get you up to speed on some of the drivetrain basics to be aware of.

Thanks, will do!
16/42 on the DR here. Do a lot of highway riding and the occasional interstate.

Thank you for watching and that's a great setup for highway riding.
Went 14/43 with 90 aspect rear on my DR...still does 60mph comfortably and a bit more...good for 2 lanes to dirt here anyways.

Glad to read you found a combo that works for you. Here in Oregon, there is a mix of riding conditions and terrains that make it hard to choose which combo to run.
So what ratio do you recommend for Interstate riding at 70 to 80 mph on the dr650 and xr650 , seems like they are revving out way more than necessary.

Thank you for the great question. On the DR650, we'd recommend a 16T - 42T combo, and for the XR650L a 15T - 42T should give you a more pleasant freeway ride. Ideally, 16T for the XR650L would be nice, but we haven't been able to find one. If you're riding a vast majority of your time at those speeds, we'd recommend a 17T front sprocket for the DR650, just to really keep the RPM's down. Granted these changes will make a big change in how the bikes operate at lower speeds.
