Teaching Shifting Cabover Pete 352 to 16 Year Old
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
While filming the still unnamed 1979 Peterbilt 352, my son asked me if he could drive it. At first I said no. But he reminded me he drives "Mr. Beefy", I 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 8.0 V10 with a stick shift. So I agreed to let him try. Before long he was floating the gears up-shifting and down-shifting.

he'll never forget this day. it was so cool of you to be patient with him and give him the chance. great video. warmed my heart
My uncle tried to teach me back when I was your son’s age and younger. I was up in Illinois for the summer and he was hauling corn to the elevators. I thought it was stupid and said no. I wish I could go back to that moment...
Now that’s super cool teaching your son to drive a Pete without power steering

That’s Great there’s nothing like a Father and Son relationship, and he said it’s Fun. PRICELESS Great Video Stay Safe ✌🏽
Put a smile on my face when he took off the first time. What a treat. And that's a good kid there. Keep doing what you're doing with him.
The best bit was Steve getting out and just letting the boy do it.
Once you get behind the building and out of sight. Stop, jump out and bang on the trash cans really loud! Just to see how fast your old man can run! LoL
He did good, my dad had me driving at 15, he'll be a pro soon,
This kid is a very good listener and fast learner future truck driver fo-sho 💯💰
I enjoyed this ,, took me back to when my pops started teaching me to drive , but with out the yelling at me 😂 was in a 62 Pete conventional he had tow trucks , later I drove his 74 cabover Pete tow truck ,,, Omg Pops teaching me to float gears 🤦♂️ hitting me in the back of the head 😂 grind them to find them 😳 pops was not a good teacher !! This is how I taught a step son in a 84 cabover Pete 🤔 while I was sitting on the dog house ,, my pops has passed away but he taught my my backing , how to tow with a Holmes 750 growing up ,,, we never forget these moments when dad is gone 😞🙌🏻
It’s good to see him having fun. Good job to him!
Man this was a great thing to see. Starting off the next generation the right way.
Great kid great father much love and respect from Detroit

I hope so!
My buddy had a single axle Ford cab over small sleeper, with a 671 Detroit and 10 speed. I planned to buy it for my youngest son as his first car to drive to work and school when he turned 16. But his mother wouldn't go for it.

Awesome to teach your son like this in a classic cabover! Love it. When men were men driver these trucks!! WOW
what a great video of a dad and his son spending time together seeing a proud dad teach his son the art called truck driver well done matt you did better than I did on my first time hats off to you FSC
Wow! He picked up on everything very quickly and asked great questions. I learned to drive a big truck in a very similar Pete. Thank you for sharing!
Love this channel. I also admire the the way you and your son bond. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾🤝🏾
He’s got it going on for sure
I like the fact that you keep it simple and creative.
Reminds me of my first job as a teenager. I was a washer/refueler at Gelco truck Leasing in Sheboygan. Learned semi driving in a 1980 GMC General with a 6V92 Detroit and 9 speed trans. Felt like I was the king of the world. At least it had power steering, lol. Have to admit, floating gears is a science. It all varies with the engine/transmission combo, but usually they are all pretty much all within the same RPM range, regardless of the engine.
Hey man! Your son drove very well this beautiful 352 Pete! What a pleasure to hear the 352's engine and turbo too. Thanks to your son and you for this vid. See ya and cheers from France!
Okay, I want to say something more. I am SO PROUD of your son. He had great instincts and you are a wonderful teacher. You both made my day, thank you.
This was fun! Thanks for this video. I got that same truck in '78.
Brings back memories of when I was in school. Very cool.
Great video Steve and Matt I hope that becomes a memory for him that will be with him the rest of his life well done you two 😊
Awesome video love the channel keep up the good work and stay safe!
Man from the time the movie Convoy came out and the CB craze in the 70s, all I wanted to do was to drive a truck. Not just to call myself a trucker, but I loved the sound, power and I loved CabOver Peterbilts and Kenworths. The only time I got to drive a heavy truck was a roll back Mac with a maxidyne high low 5 speed. While the tranny was wore out and hard to get into 2nd, it was still a 20 year olds dream. But I fitted and welded for 15 years, became an IT guy for 22 years and now 55 years old, that dream of driving heavy trucks came and went. Love your channel and watching your videos. Stay Safe and keep the hammer down when you can.
Your son is doing very well, I wish someone taught me when I was his age.
What great experience for a young man. Even if he doesn't end up driving a rig it can be something that his old man taught him, that he'll never forget.
Dude amazing teaching 👍👍👍 wish there were more teachers like you out in the world teaching young people how to drive tractor trailers 👍👍👍
So cool instructing your son
i learned how to drive in a cabover too, it was back in 1994 when i got my cdl. i loved driving. i drove for 10 years then moved and worked in a caterpillar factory building truck engines. iseeing and hearing your videos brings back great memories, keep on trucking
Came around tha corner like a pro. That first smile when he started, he was HOOKED!!!
You are a great father, my old man was ok . I wish I had more time with him . I was a failure as a father and I’m a mess right now thinking about my mistakes and regrets. Cherish these times best part is you have a video to show the grandchildren.God bless you and your family

A natural, booyah to teaching your son to drive em!
This is awesome! Best way to learn!
what a great way to learn. I learnt to drive on an orchard in a tractor. Great fun.
Great video. Next you’ll have him pulling a trailer. Nice to see your Mrs!
That turbo sounds great! Fun times, Dad and his boy hangin' out playing trucks. Enjoy this time, it's always over to soon...
I love this you the only one on KZread doing this thank God for you
He's a natural! Nice job.
Reminds me when I was 8 years old my old man teaching me to drive the split 18 Pete lol had to let out almost all the air in the seat just to be able to push the clutch..... aw yeah... GOOD OL DAYS :-) God rest his soul. :-) double clutching fun ;-) learned with 48-50' bullrack.... so many memories. . He will remember what your doin for life... GREAT JOB!!!
Yeah just doin' video and come up with one of the cool ones - learnin' on a classic is sweet. Nice to watch
That's a true life lesson right there. He got to drive a true piece of history. I love that you tell him not to use the clutch when shifting. The new generation of truck drivers wouldn't get that at all. I have been out here since 2005 and the only time I use the clutch is when starting and stopping.
Awesome. I was about 12-13 when my Dad taught me. Great job Dad
That sounds frickin awesome love it
Nice job! I’m 15 and have learned to shift my dads r model Mack. Keep up the great videos!

This guy have a good equipment and a good mentor
He is doing a great job with shifting the gears 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great now you did it, your son is not going to want you to sell this truck. He will remember this day for the rest of his life. He will probably also be on the hunt for a 352 in his later years. You are a good guy and a great father, he knows that and it means alot to him.
Ya got me brother --- I subscribed !
You just ain't heard yours from outside hero! Orwell sounds 👍 he's trying to suck the bottom out of one of those old flying j tanker cups with 2 straws when you let off to change gears....wheeeeoooo just like a well tuned Cats suppose to sound! Any- body with a ❤ has to love that kid. He's catching on fast...be takin over the driving for you. Tell him a 45yr. veteran gave him a 100 on his first test😎🇺🇸
Good stuff. Really heavy on family and bonding. At that age a person can turn either left or right. Good job dad.
Sweet looking ride
Damn, im about to turn 17 and i cant even shift to 3rd gear😂😂 keep up the good work brother
I love old cabovers and I think that your does very sifting gears .
I work for companies that wanted you to double clutch all the time and then when you got a truck that had an extra heavy clutch, Didn't hear the Companies Try to orient you into floating the gears, that's something I ended up having to learn on my own. I think that's great you teaching your son how to do that. Watch him try to do it on his pickup now.
I love that old cabover!
It's like turning a ship with them old trucks. Thank God for powersteering!
I love that 79!!!! I want one!!
I can see a father and son trucking company coming soon nice job buddy
Dang... a few turns and he isn't grinding the gearbox anymore! Great job lads.
That was awesome!!!!! Watch those fingers in the steering wheel!
I started off driving cabovers over 20 years ago you need to find me one like the Pete's you have
I just subscribe your channel after viewed some videos... awesome.. thanks for posts.
Sofar so good trucking is in his blood. Keep learning young son
This was so cool!!!
Sweet love the oldies
This is quality time!
I love them cabovers
My youngest son said he wanted to be a driver like his Dad. Sadly, I couldn't teach him anything because he "already knew it better". No matter how I explained to him the RPM difference in shifting he thought I was nuts. He's now a 42 year old homeless junkie because he always knew more even when he never had a clue.
Ok ok ,, Now there has to be some follow up vids teaching your son :-) ,,, Cool vid ...
Practice makes perfect Awsome Job 💪😀
soooo good to see the Next Generation training to assume the future!
I remember those kind of days with my dad
Mighty fine job especially for his first time. We all like making noise, hee hee hee
Not only driving a piece of history but he's not to bad at it for the first time driving it.
Steve your a Good Dad!
I remember my first time. Was 13 or 14 Dad left the keys in my the Brockway. He gave me a well deserved beating.

I just saw a video of a Brockway cabover. 4 axle. Was used in the 70's hauling steel to build the Twin Towers in NYC. Had a 12V71 in it. 4 stacks as an attempt to quiet her in Manhattan. I'd love to find a rig like that!

Great to see the younger generation learning how to drive in a classic truck.
I got the camera just in case you crash!? Gee, thanks Dad!🤣
Hell your teaching me good guidance......
I just subscribed to your channel I'm very into what you're doing with your son I think it's a good thing to do up here in New York state you can find a 6 wheeler cabover Kenworth for sale
He did well!
Good dad stuff.
you doing great
whos mister beefy? lol my first time in a truck i wasn't allowed to touch the throttle i have always been mad on trucks road trains from growing up in Geradlton to Perth then south of Geraldton and well done on teaching Matthew realy like the 26 speed Spicer transmission like in the 1988 KW t650
Looks like you will have a driver for that truck before very long.
