TEACHING ENGLISH ABROAD | WHAT'S IT REALLY LIKE? + 5 Teaching Tips
I've been teaching English abroad (mostly in Spain and France as well as the UK) for many years. I thought today I would share my experiences both good and bad. I'll talk about how I got started, how I landed my first job.
I also discuss the financial side. Can you make money teaching. Finally, I'll give you my top 5 tips for learning English. These tips, by the way are suitable for small classrooms of adults. I have taught children but that's a special skill and would require a separate video.
I welcome your feedback and if you are a TEFL teacher yourself then please share your experiences in the comments section.

Your reminiscing has brought back memories of my beginnings as an English teacher. One of my students in a language school in central London asked me "Ian, you always say "festival" when you explain things, what does this mean?" I replied "Luiz, you're Brazilian you must know what a festival is!" "No, when you start to explain you say .... So festival I'm going to show you ........" Of course what I REALLY was saying was: "first of all, I'm going to show you....." That was one of the best lessons that I got FROM my students ha ha ha ha

A similar occurrence:. A guy who had served in military capacity in the Mideast was introducing himself among a group of party-goers, and mentioned to a couple that he had "been in Iraq."...One female approached him saying, "I understand you were in an accident?" His words were overheard as he'd "been a wreck."

Great video. Hugely enjoyable. I started teaching ESL in 1989. After several years of traveling independently in Asia my ex wife and I decided we’d try teaching English in Taiwan. We were fortunate to land jobs almost immediately with a world famous ESL chain for children…from absolute beginners onwards . The company gave us a crash course…one week , six hours a day intensive classes on how to teach primary school age kids beginning English. We learnt a lot and it gave us the confidence and know how to start. We hadn’t planned to stay in Taiwan for more than a year or two. We broke up six months later. She went home and I’m still here 33 years later! I love Taiwan and it’s been really good for me. I’ve met loads of interesting people from around the world, have a great standard of living, married again to an indigenous Taiwan lady, have two grown up children and never want to live anywhere else. I speak intermediate level Mandarin and really feel that this is my home. I’ve taught all levels of English to all ages during the last 33years. I have to say I prefer to teach beginners…kids from about 7 years old onwards through to about 15 or 16. I also did private classes for around 12 years teaching one to one in the students’ homes. For the past five years I’ve worked at one private language school , teaching kids about 24 hours a week. I make about US$35 an hour tax free. The cost of living in Taiwan is far lower than in Western countries, so it’s pretty good. Thanks for your videos which I enjoy very much. I think I’m an accidental teacher. I never thought I’d make a career of it, but here I am. Sunday night in southern Taiwan. Six hours of teaching tomorrow afternoon and evening…

@@LetThemTalkTV You meant una escuela de idiomas- a language school. It is so sad that I didn't meet you in Madrid.😭 I am also cancer ♋ sir. I am against grammar. I learned English grammar at school for 10 years. I passed many English exams with flying colours at school. However, I couldn't communicate when I got to London. I knew all the grammar rules, but I couldn't speak at all. I stumbled on every single word. That was a disaster. I couldn't understand native speakers. I couldn't figure out why I had remarkable marks at my English exams.

Inspiring story about your life career! I was Lithuanian( my native) language teacher in my country and at school I studied English. Our English language teachers wouldn’t speak in English only grammar, vocabulary etc. When I came to England after my retirement I couldn’t understand what people are talking about 😲 If it was my choice I would choose native British teacher without experience than not native English grammar expert! I adore your amazing, brilliant, perfectly done and funny lessons! Thank you and best wishes‼️

I really love your sense of humor !
I am a teacher myself and I really appreciate all the materials you deliver and I just can't get enough of your dedication to teaching
One way to engage the quiet students and subdue, but not silence, the more dominant students is to have 1) a "no blurting" policy where students are not allowed to merely shout out answers, 2) develop a student "spontaneity" system when you ask questions. For example, I wear a "vest/waistcoat" with two pockets containing index cards with all the students names. I pick a random card when addressing questions or soliciting opinions for conversation. This insures everyone gets a chance in a random way. ADDITIONALL, 3) proper wait time. I ask the question, not to an individual, but to the populace, then address them using the cards I mentioned. I can also take volunteers, but this may prove to cater to the dominant students of which you speak. I love your channel, it is loaded with wisdom, linguistics and you have a genuine heart of a teacher. Your desire to teach "as you would like to be taught" is key.
I'm a non-native English teacher in Ukraine, and I find your videos very useful both for me and my senior students. Thank you 💕

You have a very special way with the presentation of your.lessons and that makes all the difference. The thing I like the most about your classes is that you cover all the sections of the language. I am especially fond of your grammar and vocabulary lessons à la mode. Thanks Sir Gideon.

You are one of the best teachers I've listened to. I enjoy and appreciate your way very much. Much love from Saint-Petersburg, Russia
Hello! I enjoyed watching and listening to your teaching adventure. I have been teaching English since 1993. It seems we started this job at the same time. Your story reminds me of all the emotions I had when I started, all the mistakes I made back then and all the questions that I could not answer because I didn't have an answer. By the way, I have used that trick ,too- 'We don't have time for this question now, but next time, I am going to answer it'. Yeah, it works all the time. Anyway, teaching is full of surprises and a teacher will never be able to foresee all things that are going to happen in class. That's why some classes go well, others OK and , of course, some of them are disastrous. Have a nice weekend!

Never translate in class, and if it's difficult to explain what an apple is, draw it. There are loads of tips, tricks and techniques to help the teacher, who has to be an actor and a drawer at the same time. And nowadays, with Google images, it's even easier. Any time the students can connect the English word to a drawing instead of connecting it to their own language, it's just really good for not only remembering that word, but it will help them to start thinking in English more. The more the students can distance themselves from their own language, the better.

Hello, there! Congratulations, and thanks a lot. I am also an English teacher who started working as such forty years ago, whan I was 19, and I've never stopped learning (I know I never will, and I like it that way) - five years earlier I had started teaching my first Maths classes, when I still was a secondary student. Nowadays I devote all my time to teaching English. I enjoy and appreciate your videos with all the useful information you share...and the way you do it. Needless to say, after all these years I have also undergone so many different situations, which make all sort of stories to be told. English is not my native language; Spanish is: I'm writing from Mexico. However, by mysterious reasons not to be mentioned here, I have been enlightened, if you will, and shown a profound secret about the English language and a way to use it that native speakers don't even suspect. I might tell you about it sometime... Well, you say you run a school - should you need to recruit a teacher, you can count on me. Regards, JET

Thank you so much for all your videos. I've listened to many of them. I had the blessing to live in England for a year to study a Masters degree in Leeds. I loved the English culture and the people. Now I'm retired and I don't work anymore teaching. Teaching English was fun but stressing at the same time.
Thank you very much, I’m not an English teacher, but I’m a student and I feel teachers do great job teaching their students English (or any other language) as you said, you are here to contribute to the learning of a language so as to promote communication between people and I strongly feel teachers do achieve that by getting involved with the students in the classroom and making classes dynamic and enjoyable so that students attend to class eager to learn everyday something new. Teachers have a truly hard work behind preparing lessons and all kinds of activities so as the classes to be interesting and diverse, and that’s a work that we as students do not see… thank you for making it visible 🥰
You are my role model. INTELLIGENT, SMART, WITH SENSE OF HUMOR. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
I appreciate all your videos.
Gosh! Your story is practically the same as mine. Incredible. I'm in Zaragoza and , since the lockdown, have been giving classes online. Everything you say is spot on and I wouldn't change my job for anything. When my students pass B1, B2 and so on I get an immense feeling of pride.

The escaping story is so relatable. I'm still at stage one of it, combined with history and political science. People revealing their 'worldview' are exceptional in a sense that many have none. Thank you very much for this video! It was very interesting learning about your experiences as teaching English in a foreign country. Personally, I am planning on teaching English as a second language in Japan after Uni, so its interesting to learn how you found it. It is regrettable to hear that teachers are often restricted to what they are allowed to teach, even when the teachers individual methods could really benefit the students! However, as you mentioned in the video, I am likely to be one of the people who teach in a foreign country for the experience and benefit of also solidifying my knowledge in Japanese. Ultimately, teaching is my passion and this channel has been a real inspiration to me even as someone who is an English native heh. Thank you very much Mr LetThemTalk!

Helpful and lovely!
Very interesting. I'm not a teacher, at least not yet, but I have often thought of teaching German (my mothertongue). Anyway, have a good new Years eve and a happy new year.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I believe being a good teacher requires the attitude you've got towards teaching and life in general. The desire to explore the language and one's own methods of teaching is essential. I am a non-native teacher with a considerable time spent in the UK. I even studied English language and linguistics in London as my BA degree. It was indeed an utter shock for me that my native English classmates had no clue about the English grammar. 😂 Being born and raised in Hungary, grammar was God to me 😅 and honestly I still love it...learning and teaching alike. It is just so fascinating to see how language works as a rule based system and the differences and similarities across languages. Now I live in Spain, conquering Spanish language which I absolutely adore. When I moved here almost 2 years ago, I was straight away given an English teaching job at an academy. The head of the school appreciated my teachings skills and wasn't bothered my non-native accent. Although she was happy with my performance, what made me slightly uncomfortable at times as a perfectionist was my limited vocabulary compared to the native teachers. Although I lived in London for about 13 years, I feel that the range of my vocab will never even be close to that of an educated native speaker. Anyway, this dissatisfaction makes me never stop improving my English. 😊 And I draw satisfaction from spending time with English in whatever way. And Gideon, your videos are so fun to watch and informative that I've become addicted to them. They definitely spice up my learning. Thank you again for the great content. You are a prime example of how language teaching and learning can be fun. Please never stop! 😊😊😊
