Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks | M-84AS1/AS2

Hello and welcome back to Tank Encyclopedia's special report on the Partner 2023 exhibition. While our previous segment provided an extensive overview of the showcased military technology, today's episode will be dedicated exclusively to what was, for us, the most interesting weapon system on display: the M-84 main battle tank modernized to the AS1/AS2 standard. How did this modernization package of the M-84, itself a copy of the venerable T-72, come about, and how does it measure up against the challenges of a modern battlefield?

    Serbia is doing a great job, despite a still small but steadily growing economy, the engineers of the Serbian defence industry always manage to find very good and effective solutions to strengthen their army. Just look at this modernisation of the M-84 main battle tank, or even better the "Nora-B52 Perun" howitzer! It is also interesting to see how strong Serbia has become in the field of combat drones, you can see that Serbia is analysing the war in Ukraine very well! However, Serbia should definitely upgrade its logistics or strengthen and supplement its logistics. For example, trucks for the transport of war equipment such as tanks. Or many new vehicles that are not directly used in combat, such as diesel tankers. It cannot be that soldiers are still driven around in the TAM-150 of the 60s/70s! Great! Keep up the good work and prepare for the "unexpected". God bless Serbia and their Friends!

    I wrote and published a book several years ago and in the later chapters a country (Cabinda & Zaire - provinces of Angola) rebelled and they were able to get their hands on ten M-84AS1's (this was in 2014) which formed the backbone of their armed forces. The 10 MBTs managed to, with assistance, hold off the Angolan Army's first major offensive against their fledgling nation. Because of this, Serbian military military hardware became the vehicles of choice for this oil-rich country. So, when Kuwait said 'no', Cabinda said 'YES' to the modernization program. Cabinda remembered who their friends were. Mind you this is just a fantasy, but I like to think the M-84AS1 could have been the dominant tank in southern Africa, especially in a defensive war as I imagined it. Go Serbia!

    interesting fact, Serbia is one of the first countries to adopt 6.5x39 mm Grendel cartridge as their future standard round for new modular M17 (M19) assault rifle that has ability to change barrels and calibers in field, making the rifle from CQB firearm to DMR or marksman rifle all thanks to 6.5 grendel, also it can use 7.62x39 and older standard 5.56x45 nato calibers (when appropriate barrel and bolt is replaced) , bit of the strain for production and logistics but Prvi Partizan Užice can take care of that, since they produce and export all of those munitions for longer time already.

  • @Klovaneer

    @Klovaneer

    8 ай бұрын

    Multicaliber&modular firearms have been a hot topic for decades and they never worked out - you are always left with extra weight or compromised reliability for a given design. 6.5 Grendel is a great hunting cartridge but it doesn't have .223/5.45's low recoil nor .308/x54's barrier penetration. But at least it's not whatever the hell US is adopting.

  • @alexanderp8037

    @alexanderp8037

    8 ай бұрын

    6.5 grendel has 50% less wind drift and can hit targets up to 800 meters but is effective around 500 meters and contains double the amount of LB ft of energy compared to 556. On 500 meters it contains around 800 LB ft while 5.56 is reduced to 280 LB feet the power of a 9mm round (doesn't penetrate armor). Only problem is 6.5 needs a 20' inch barrel its more or less a round for a bullpup. Anyway i've seen the M19 MCS and it look pretty impressive its truly a next gen AK only 50% of the parts are compatible with AK the 50% is new design. Only problem is the cocking mechanism which is T handle like on a AR15. Also the gun doesn't have a last round bolt open. Also it needs to be tested if it holds zero when the barrel is swapped the AUG does so i expect this one as well. Its truly a next gen AK, the AK12 should have been like this

  • @Klovaneer

    @Klovaneer

    8 ай бұрын

    @@alexanderp8037 You could replace grendel with .357sig and 556 with 9mil in the text. Only reason Serbia had this much headway with 6.5 is that they never adopted a low impulse cartridge. In my humble opinion next gen AK should not be half a kilo heavier than AKM and AK-12 just should not have been. AK-74 receiver and barrel are as optimized as it is possible, there is not a single thing to fix in there (or at least no one managed so far).

    @@BrenoAgmL true but due to the t-80's performance afterwards, russia chose to put it back into production this year with some upgrades, like severely increased reverse speed, due to its amazing performance in the conflict, and yeah those losses will happen if in large numbers, its to be expected, but russia is lucky that it has more than enough of these tanks, and the fact they're rather cheap compared to western counterparts,

    The problem with that tank is armor, or should i say base armor used on it, while addition of ERA is good, that tank still lacks good frontal base armor (talking about composite) and until that aint fixed, we cant call that tank good. We would be far better off just buying new tanks, altho it would cost more, its still much much much better value for money than upgrading these old tanks.

    Do you think Leopard 2s would Abe a good answer? Sure they are bigger but they have better internal tech, are fast and modern. We can't buy Russian tanks no more due to sanctions so I guess the only good western tank that suits our needs would be a leopard?

    Perhaps the old dog knows new tricks but it still pops it's turret the same as yesterday. This is reminiscent of calling an AR15 variant a new rifle. Nope, just an improvement on a brilliant sixty-ish year old design.

    popping the turret or not any MBT is hard to survive today... Just look Ukraine... Lancet-3 is killing Leo 2A6 like a piece of cake! One Merkava IV got burned by Kornet-E in Palestine/Israel conflict... 300$ Drones dropping grenades into turret trough 40x40 turret hatch and disabling few million $ MBT.
