Teacher fired for asking student to engage in critical thinking is ‘absolutely insane’

Sky News Digital Presenter Gabriella Power discusses the firing of a teacher who questioned a student's claim that author J.K. Rowling was a transphobe and bigot.
A teacher was fired after his video went viral on X, where he gently challenged a student’s stance on whether Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is a transphobe and bigot.
“It’s absolutely insane, isn’t it the point of education is to teach the next generation how to think critically,” Ms Power told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“Hopefully, this teacher will receive a lot of support and go on to bigger and better things and will continue to educate people in some way.”
“He was so careful language when he was being asked about JK Rowling he was pointing out some pretty fair points.”

Yeah he broke the terms of employment--if for no other reason than penning a book on his work laptop, which of course is the school's property and went back to them when he was terminated. (He didn't even back up his work. 🤦‍♀️) So while he's great at philosophy and I love his method of speaking to his students and getting them to come up with their own answers, he lacks a lot of common sense and ingenuity. If I remember correctly, even in the beginning he was waiting for the ball to drop and said as much--which almost assuredly means he knew he was breaking at least one rule that his continued employment hinged on.

This man will now be projected into a much better life having established his integrity and intellect in the public sphere. My daughter pointed out that this was an opinion, not a fact, and had to fight to be removed from class. As a student she argued that school is a place that should teach you HOW to think, not WHAT to think, by exploration of FACTS not rhetoric. At the moment, I haven't observed sufficient evidence in this video to know why he was terminated from his position, if he even was (it's not like I've checked the staff directory for the institution where I don't know where he works). We must use our own critical thinking, and analyse the information available. @@creditelectric That's bullshit. I find that persons who were home-schooled tend to be better conversationalists and more pleasant to be around than those who were sent to day-prisons/schools. It's one thing to be socialized, it's another thing to be badly socialized by exposure to a toxic environment, and that's what going to school will get you. Most modern schools are also an extremely bad place to go if you want to see wide-ranging opinions and new ideas explored with nuance and an open mind. You can do a lot better in the age of the internet.

It is a big wide place everyone must adapt to & schools are part of it be it rough or elite, the high fee schools can & do turn out disappointing people.
