Teach Cat to SIT and STAY with Clicker Training

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

You can teach your cat to Sit and Stay in no more than a week, even if you've never done clicker training before.
Sit and Stay is a very simple trick combination of Sit + Stay. To achieve that, we are going to use operant conditioning. Rewarding our cat for doing nothing, and extending the "do nothing" period little by little until they understand that STAY means don't move until I release you.

    They perform for the expectation of a treat not for the treat itself. If you keep the expectation high (meaning that you keep rewarding no matter if it’s training time or not) when you ask for it, even when you don’t have treats, because the expectation will be there, they are more likely going to listen to you ☺️

    Sit Command Summary Step 1: Click and then reward to help associate the clicker with treats. Do this as many times as needed. Tip: divide treats up in smaller pieces so cat doesn’t become full. Step 2: hold treat in right hand and clicker on left (reverse if lefty) Step 3: hold treat above head until there butt touches the floor, click and reward. Do this step 5-10 times until they can associate the gesture with treats Step 4: take away the treat and use only gesture. If cat doesn’t react without the treat, your cat hasn’t understood the behaviour. Repeat step 3, 5-10 more times in this case. If they can understand the non-verbal gesture, you are ready to move on to using a verbal command. Step 5: incorporate verbal command with gesture. Say sit, click and then reward with a treat AFTER. Do this for a few days and the cat will eventually understand the verbal command on there own. Step 6: try commanding sit without the physical command to see if you succeeded.

Like 3 weeks ago, I found your channel, and you inspired us! We started with "no" then I taught him "come here" and his name. Now I am teaching finger targeting and Sit/Stay, so this video came at the perfect time! He is also a natural with harness/leash and we already made it a few feet from the front door! Ezio runs back home if he sees even one person so we will keep practicing. Thank you and thank Mia for us! You two are amazing! Keep up the great work!

    I have two 16 week old Singapuras. It's incredible how quickly they have learned some of these tricks. Your videos are very good. I do need some advice on how to train both cats together. Right now I have to kennel one while training the other but I'm worried this might be confusing for them hearing the clicker but not being rewarded while in the kennel. Do you think I should have them in complete separate rooms? Also you should consider bleeping out the clicks in your videos.

    Thank you so much for this video!! I am teaching this to my 3 1/2 month old kitten. She learned it very quickly! However she’s an impetuous little girl and will not hold the stay when she sees the leash-she’s so excited, and will roll and bite. Today she sat nicely when I got the loop over her head and I sort of cheated by putting a treat down that she ate while I buckled her tummy. No bites-yay!

    Cats react to our commands because there's an expectation of a treat. If you never reward a behavior outside a training session, the expectation of a treat outside the training session is non-existant and thus, there's no motivation to comply. My recommendation is to reward intermitently outside sessions. Not always, but sometimes. This will increase the expectation. Intermitent reinforcement is a very strong motivator (think about gambling and casinos) hope this helps!

    Can you please do a video on how to teach/reteach my cat, Lynx to use his scratching post? When I first adopted Lynx, I successfully trained him to use the scratching post, but within the last 2 years, he has begun scratching the carpet and the sofa unless I have a blanket or towel on it. I have tried redirecting him to his scratching posts with the same training method as before, but with little success now that he is approximately 5 or 6 years old. He is receptive to clicker training and very food motivated.

    There are a couple things you can do if you want to train your kittens together: 1) Use a different clicker sound (so that they don't confuse their "click" with their siblings) 2) Teach them different tricks (so they don't both do the trick at the same time) The other alternative, is locking one cat at a time. You can lock yourself with the cat you are training instead of the cat that it's not trained. That makes the experience for the cat that's alone nicer.

But one of my cats has one eye, does that cause any problems? My other question is my other cat is fat (not emenssely fat but we have had her on a diet) and I do not want to overfeed her, does giving them treats frequently make them fat? And she is quite lazy because every time I try to train her she's like "I want to go out, let me out!" (we do let our cats out because we have a big garden) plus she and him are easily distracted or bored, but I still try to find a place where they wont be distacted. When my cat was 3 months old I tried to train him cause you said it was an ideal age to train your cat so I did, but he was still too young he:s so easy to distract and he won't focus on me so I gave up then, when he was 4 months old I noticed he's starting to get independent and not so hyper anymore so I tried to train him and OMG 😱 he learned to come to me when I say his name in 2 days 😁🥺😭 I think it's because I bought him a new cat food which is wet food and it was his first time trying it and he was OBSESSED the reason I couldn't train him when he was 3 month old is because I thought he dididnt like treats because some cats do not like treats so I accepted it, so yeah 😊 it was a wet food for kittens tuna flavored since he loved it so much I decided to conserve it to be treats and omg 😭😭 I taught him to sit in one day your a true life saver I love you so much

    I probably should but I don’t. Because I use regular kibble as treats, it’s quite difficult to exceed so much that could cause a health issue. One way to know if your cat is a little chubby is by rubbing their ribs. If you can’t feel them, you need to reduce calories ☺️

    That´s such a good question. I use stay from further away and I don´t hold it there for long. You can use a close fist for Stay (like marines in movies) but I like the ¨STOP¨ feel of the hand. For a high five I also open the fingers vs. stay (fingers together).

    I have two kittens and I'm trying to clicker train them. I can get them to sit down, but they are way too excited about the treats to keep still! Do you have tips for that, or for training multiple cats/kittens in general?

  • @OutdoorBengal

    @OutdoorBengal

    2 жыл бұрын

    Training multiple cats is an extra challenge. My recommendation is: 1) Try to teach different tricks at a time, so that they do not distract each other 2) Use different clicker sounds for each cat (always the same sound per cat) so that they one cat doesn't misinterpret the other's "click" when trraining. An alternative to the above is to separate the cats for training. Regarding the excitement (that's normal) try to reward early on the stay command and become more challenging as you go. Good luck!

E.g. she reached up with both paws and clamped my finger, I pulled the treat away but got a few scratches for it. Does anyone have any tips or faced similar?

She doesn't react well to me putting some gentle pressure on her back either to encourage her to sit. I don't think she gets what we're trying to do and she then loses interest and walks away, and it's really hard for be to get her engaged again. I've been trying with her target stick & luring her to a spot, then only giving her the treat when she sits - but I don't think she's getting it. Does anyone have any ideas?

But the problem is.. my first cat doesn't move or listen to my commands if he doesn't see the clicker 😭 my clicker was bright blue cause the other colors were sold out how- what?

  • @johnnyflawless
    @johnnyflawless11 ай бұрын

    She learned sit but stay is hard. Soon as she sits if I do a different hand signal and say stay, she seems to think that means move 😒. I've been using a clicker up to this point, but I'm wondering if using it during stay will confuse her since there's a delay between the stay command and the click after you've waited for her to stay.

  • @OutdoorBengal

    @OutdoorBengal

    Stay is the most difficult trick I've ever taught Mia. It's hard to go against their instincts! You should only click once you are good for your cat to leave the stay position. Start rewarding faster after you make the command and increase the time as they understand what that means.

    Help! I’ve been trying to teach “sit” for a month and my cat just doesn’t seem to get it. If I hold the treat above her head, she never stays still, she just paces around my hand. This happens even when I use really high value treats. Sometimes she will sit down on her own and I click then, but she’s not looking at me/my hand when she does this so I don’t think she’s actually associating the click with the motion. Any tips?

  • @OutdoorBengal

    @OutdoorBengal

    Sounds like your kitten is too hungry or too agitated. Play a little before and charge the clicker before every session, to reduce the anxiety pre-training. Throwing treats away works great. Also, try first connecting the behavior with the marking and then try to incorporate the symbol or the sound.

    It's easy! Put the food out. Once they eat, remove the food. When they complain, play with them instead. In 6 hours you put down the bowl and let them eat again until they stop. Remove the bowl for 6 hours. :) The trick is to let them eat as much as they want every time but remove the bowl after.
