    I’m 32, I’ve had cats my whole life, I’ve never tried training them beyond behavioral and to come when called. We got a kitten 9 days ago and I looked up training and found your videos. 9 days and she’s learned sit, spin and high five. 9 DAYS! I think she’s about 5 months old and she’s picking up the clicker training beautifully. Thank you so much! This has been such a fun way to bond and I get to show all my friends now lol. I was trying “sit” at first but was having difficulty. After I taught her to follow my finger when pointing at the ground with a treat in my fingers she started picking up the other commands a lot more smoothly. We feed her on a schedule (morning, after work and before bed) and I do 2-3, 5-10 minute training sessions a day.

    Thank you so much for the videos and helpful advices! Coco (my baby cat) and me enjoy them very much :) He really likes clicker training, and he starts purring as a tractor as soon as he sees a clicker in my hand! Thanks to your videos we learned the finger following and the sit command :) The one thing I don't really understand, and I haven't find people discussing it, he doesn't react to commands if there is no clicker in my hand, even though as soon as he sees the clicker he does everything absolutely perfectly...

  • @OutdoorBengal

    I really wanted to add this as the 6th mistake but it would have turned out to be too long of a video... Cats react to the tricks because there's an expectation of a reward. If there's no click, there's no reward, there's no behavior. You need to create the expectation of a reward without the clicker. Try to find a word or a cue you can use "GOOD" or "YES" and incorporate that to your trainings. Then, even outside training sessions, reward every now and then after they respond to a command. That's called intermitent reinforcement and it's the strongest reinforcer you can offer (think of casinos). Hope this helps!

    Hey Albert. Love your videos and love Mia ❤️‍🔥 I have a sacred cat of Burma and I was wondering if I should trim his hair on his paws? I’ve seen people do that and I don’t know if I should 🤔 Also I wonder if the training would work with someone other than me?

  • @OutdoorBengal

    @OutdoorBengal

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cats use the hair on their paws to feel things around them (like whiskers do). If you trim it, you don't let them use them as such. I would not do it. Different people can train the same cat, but it will take a little longer for the cat to understand.

    You're very welcome! It's not a matter of rewarding generously, it's giving 4-5 treats to remind your cat that clicker session is on and that after a click comes a reward! As your cat grows older and more comfortable, you can stop doing it.

  • @OutdoorBengal

    @OutdoorBengal

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cats react to our commands because there's an expectation of a treat. If you never reward a behavior outside a training session, the expectation of a treat outside the training session is non-existant and thus, there's no motivation to comply. My recommendation is to reward intermitently outside sessions. Not always, but sometimes. This will increase the expectation. Intermitent reinforcement is a very strong motivator (think about gambling and casinos) hope this helps!

    Hi Albert, I really liked your channel, and I decided to get a bengal cat myself after having watched some of your video adventures with Mia. My bengal is a boy, and he is 5-month old now. I have managed to teach him some commands, like touch (with the nose), sit, high-five and more recently I am working on handshake. But one thing I have been pretty unsuccessful is teaching him to stay. It shocks me to see Mia so calm when you’re making her food, because my boy is very pushy, and I am not sure if that is his personality, or if I am failing to train him. For example, when I am bringing the food to him, he tends to be very vocal and continues to loudly meow until he gets it. He will still follow commands, but stay has been difficult. With the clicker, I try to ask him to sit, then reward him for doing nothing for a few seconds while saying stay, but that does not seem to be working. Any tips?

    Hi! I'm struggling to clicker train my kitten (4 months old). He's not food motivated, but has been more interested since switching to freeze dried chicken. I feel like he's smart and trainable, he learned the sit command in two sessions, but I haven't been able to teach him anything since. My problem is that he won't look at me or my hand. I'm trying to teach him to high five right now, but 9 times out of 10 he won't look at my hand, just at the floor and go searching for treats. On the other hand, if i do get him to look, he will high five 9 times out of 10, so I feel like he does understand what I want? It's been very frustrating so far, and then I feel bad for getting frustrated. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but I'm unsure how to correct it. I've been trying to have him on a chair during training, it's been helping a little but not much. I usually traing him, have a oly session and then feed him. Is his attention span too short because he's still a kitten? Should I do dome training sessions rewarding him for simply looking at me? Should I play first, then train and feed?Should I train a little earlier, maybe an hour before meal time? Some input would be greatly appreciated. He enjoys training, starts purring and kneading almost immediately, but I feel like a bad teacher and pet parent :(

Some cats prefer a vertical item like a roll of paper towels on a holder on the floor, or a piece of fabric pinned to the sofa. The key is it has to show claw marks/destruction because that's how cats mark territory (besides cheek rubbing and peeing, and we don't want peeing). So my cat seems to be listening to me when I’m training him, but he doesn’t listen to me when we are not training. Any advice?

    Cats react to our commands because there's an expectation of a treat. If you never reward a behavior outside a training session, the expectation of a treat outside the training session is non-existant and thus, there's no motivation to comply. My recommendation is to reward intermitently outside sessions. Not always, but sometimes. This will increase the expectation. Intermitent reinforcement is a very strong motivator (think about gambling and casinos) hope this helps!

    I have no idea, bro! You need to understand first why she does that, then correct it and offer and alternative. I can't help if I don't know what your cat is looking for.

    What do you mean by “charging” a clicker?

    Having a hard time finding a treat he likes. So far he only goes for the wet snack sticks. I buy him toys, he plays with empty Amazon boxes, I buy him a suede bed. He sprawls out in my pillow. I end up talking and negotiating with a kitten. I believe they call this Mid-life crisis

    I have a question, can someone help me? my male cat is 9 months old and now all he does is cry all night and day because I just introduced him to raw ground beef as a treat, and after he tasted it all he does is cry for it all day long. He wants me to fallow him from my room to the kitchen and starts crying in front of the fridge. Sometimes he goes by himself to the kitchen and keeps crying and peaks at my room so I know he is meowing at me. This behavior started 4 days ago and it wont go away. He doesn't want to eat his regular food he just takes a bite of it when he is really hungry. Yes he is a spoiled cat. Please help me, I feel bad for him and for my ears. Please someone help us.😱

    It's not what you want to hear but you set the rules. If you don't want to give him beef all the time, don't do it. If when he is crying you "obey" you are training your cat to keep on meowing. Let him meow and ignore him and he'll learn that meowing doesn't give him what he wants. I would introduce play sessions where you offer the treats, and only offer the treats during those sessions. Hope this helps!
