Tatar Nation: The Other Crimea

Crimea's Tatars - who amount to 12 percent of the peninsula's 2.2 million residents - overwhelmingly boycotted the March 16th referendum for Crimea to become part of Russia. The Tatar's bad history with Russia was a major factor of their decision, as Stalin persecuted and deported them en masse from the Crimean Peninsula in 1944. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tatars trickled back into Crimea, but their status there was always temporary. With Crimea's much-disputed status as part of Russia following the referendum, the future of the Tatars is a big question mark. VICE News' Simon Ostrovsky spent some time with Tatars in Simferopol in the week leading up to the referendum to get their side of the story.

I don't think so. Stalin did screw them over, but he did far worse throughout the empire. He had people butchered as well, don't forget that. Being sent to places like Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan- probably to break apart their ethnic group so their will be less chance of a Rebellion is little compared to the other bad Sh^t he was doing.

TagMehirTzedek I'm not talking about the deportation specifically. From Wiki " No other Soviet nationality suffered the decline imposed on the Crimean Tatars; between 1917 and 1933 half the Crimean Tatar population had been killed or deported." My family was shot, imprisoned and sent to Siberia, but my people as a whole fared better.

Nikisright Why minimise the suffering of people who are treated worse on their homeland than the imported Russians, some of whom still believe lies about the Crimean Tatars by Soviet propaganda. A lot of you were killed? Undeniably. But is your language still alive? Have your customs been destroyed? Were you forced to renounce your customs and traditions? No? That's more than hundreds of ethnic minorities can say. Numbers really don't matter when you are talking about genocide versus war casualties and shitty economic policy casualties. Get over yourselves, russians were favored in the Soviet union over every other ethnicity and nationality.

It is true that historically Tatars were the majority in Crimea, according to the 1785 census 84.1% of the population of the peninsula were Tatars with only 2.2% being Russian, no Ukrainians at that time. The percentage of Tatars after that started declining, by 1897 they were just little more numerous than the Russians at 35.55% and 33.11% respectively. Ukrainians were at 11.84% at the time. By the next census of 1926 Tatars were not longer a majority, making up 25.1% of the population, while Russians accounted for 42.2%. So Tatars lost their majority status in Crimea long before Stalin deported them in 1944. According to the 1939 census Russians made up almost half of the populatin at 49.6% while Tatars stood at 19.4%. Not that Ukrainians never throughout history were the majority in Crimea, the highest percentage of Ukrainians ever there was 26.5% (1970), while Russians were already an overwhelming majority at 67.3%. The number of Tatars - as well as their percentage - increased under Russian occupation: in 2014 there were 277,336 of them while in 2021 there were 284,522.

As a Chinese, it's really not my right to judge. But I want to say that there is no such thing as absolute right or wrong. What's happening in Ukraine maybe good for someone and bad for the others. It maybe bad for Tatars, but it is good for the Russians in Crimea. For example, Russia had occupied 300 million square kms from China's weak Qing Dynasty and support Mongolia claim independency. This of course is a terrible thing for Chinese, but I can imagine it is a good thing for the Russians. There is no happy ending for everyone.

Much as I respect Ostrovsky, the Tatars began to return while Gorbachev was still in power. But the majority really did come back after Ukraine became independent. What many forget is that 55% of the Crimean population voted in favor of joining independent Ukraine. In Sevastopol, the supposed hotbed of Russian military patriotism, even more voted in favor. But that has been forgotten under the onslaught of Russian propaganda and disinformation. And in part the Ukrainian leadership was at fault as well, for being infiltrated by Russian fifth columnists and for not understanding the importance of making the public aware of the fact that mainland Ukraine built most of the modern infrastructure in Crimea and provided almost all of the peninsula's potable water and power, as well as 70% of its food and tourists, prior to Russia's power grab in 2014. Today, many Crimeans have fled the peninsula and the people there are suffering in every way possible, including political persecution.

Well part of the problem is that Ukraine never really left Russia until now and have had nothing but corrupt President until now. Putin decide to attack Ukraine because he saw NATO as not caring and a easy target. But Putin forget that people usually fight for their homelike when given a chance. My feeling any Russia who came after 2014 should be out of Crimea. Ukraine will have huge issue after this was finished with rebuilding but hopefully they will invite the right people back and do it right. When these area fell after the Soviet Union failed their was no plan and no nothing. Just the local government and it take years for a new country to get on their feet. If you are American you should look at our own history. It certainly was the Constitution was signed and all was good with never a problem again. Even know we seem to not be able to get along or appreciate everything we have. Unless you are living in the street you are better off than 80% of the world population as far as getting you basic needs fit and yet all most people do is whine over people that their belief are not your business no matter that someone want to go to church or a women marrying another women. It is called freedom.and to have it you have to learn to be tolerate because someone probably does not agree with your lifestyle either so we do best to shut our mouth and live our lives with a little respect, dignity and love. We do not have to agree 100% with everyone to get along.

The "modern infrastructure" dates from soviet times, it was built by the soviet. Also, just because tatars don't like russians does not mean they want to be in ukraine, they don't want to be in either ukraine or russia, and this video illustrate that pretty clearly. So stop your ukraine propaganda, tatars don't want it, just like they don't want russian propaganda.

One thing in their favor is the support of Tatarstan, their president already urged Putin to apply the Rehabilitation Law (for victims of Stalin) to the Crimean Tatars. Russia has a chance now to show they can do better than Ukraine; settle the land claims, build roads, supply gas, water and electricity. Let's hope they don't screw it up. Wouldn't just be good for the Tatars, it would help Russia internationally, especially in the Muslim world.

It's sad that we live in a world now and oftentimes why we are in disagreement and fighting against each other is because our parents were not being good parents. Growing up you learn most of everything you know from your parents and they taught us a lot of good and a lot of bad seeing the younger woman's mind hasn't been skewed by her parents and thinking objectively makes me feel good about people and proves that politics and wealth destroy families, communities, states or provinces, and even countries.

Мы ездили в Украину как к себе домой, не чувствовали ни границ ни чужих людей, то что сейчас происходит это ненормально, Украина всегда была частью русского мира, у большого количества русских в том числе и у меня есть родственники там. The other fact is when one of the world's most reputable Poll Companies from Germany did an in depth Poll in Crimea well after it was back with Russia it showed even a majority of Tartars voted for rejoining Russia and were happy to be back with Russia. That is all that counts. If Vice wanted to be unbiased and present a balanced view why didnt they interview some of the more than 50 percent of Tartars who wanted to rejoin Russia and are happy to be back. That would be problematic, because the Tatars just have a bunch of villages all over Crimea, while the rest live in larger cities with other nationalities. Would be unrealistic, and anyway what is a country of 300k Tatars going to do as independent nation? To be honest for such a small minority they already got many concessions which even the Kurds in Turkey don't get. Its also a myth that most Tatars are anti-Russian, in reality its the corrupt Medjlis with Dzhemilev who is making all the fuss and does not reflect the opinion of most Tatars.

Tatars is one group of muslims which is self dependent, non violent, united and negotiable. I don't see why they should be marginalised. Isn't it good to see this kind of muslim group?

TagMehirTzedek for your information, that is not al-qaeda's flag and al-qaeda has never formally recognised it as their flag or has patent to it. The words written on the flag are the shahada or proclamation of islamic faith. That's all and you link it to a terrorist group? Tell me if there has been any tatars involved in acts of terrorism as a group.

TagMehirTzedek This is an Islamic flag of faith used for century's and it existed way before word "terrorist" was first spoken. If you will walk this way you will call everyone in green car a Al Quaeda supporter. That organization don't have a flag because they are not an nation/country.

that now in the Crimea with the Tatars ... the Crimean Tatar language has become one of the state languages, the Tatars have their own media in the Tatar language. the Tatars have quotas for all power structures. such quotas that there are not so many people willing to go to power. Mejlis does not recognize nature. Tatars have no problems in Crimea now. as there are no other 300 nationalities of Russia 🇷🇺

У меня вопрос к автору фильма - этим роликом вы пытаетесь внести раздор между народами, населяющими полуостров. Если ролик создан для англоязычной аудитории - Mr. Ostrovsky - what is the main idea and the aim of this film? It looks like you try to disrupt people in the Crimea.
