India is still way more diverse and secular than westerner can ever imagine and way more open towards other religions and cultures than the west ever will be. Can you help me understand something? I know some Indians here, in America, who wear flip flops and sandals with bare feet even during the winter, and with suit and tie, and even while pushing a lawnmower (dangerous because could easily slip or get feet cut). My question is, why do some Indians prefer wearing sandals no matter what the occasion or the weather? I wear sandals when it’s hot out, or when I’m just running to the store, but not in the freezing winter time, or if I am wearing a suit. I do have a neighbor who is Indian and I am not exaggerating, but I have never seen him wear anything but flip flops, ever. Is there a cultural reason for this? I asked an Indian friend once who tried to explain that it had might have something to do with removing shoes when entering homes to keep dirt out of the house, but he wasn’t sure. Most Indians I do encounter around here are wearing open toe shoes most of the time and I am just genuinely curious if there is a cultural or historical reason for it? Sorry I am not trying to be insensitive in any way whatsoever by asking this. Edit: The response I am receiving to this mostly seems due to a slight misunderstanding of what I’m specifically asking. So, to use an example, Italians eat a lot of pasta. It’s always on Italian restaurant menus. Is it racist or odd to ask why or why pasta became an important cultural dish for Italy? It’s an anthropological question, if anything, which is no different than wondering how anything else came about through history.

​@@992turbosI will try my best to explain. Firstly, India is hot and humid. Wearing sandals or flip flops is simply more comfortable. Secondly, shoes here, are seen as a part of formal attire. People wear shoes when going to the office/workplace. Younger people wear shoes for the gym, college and whenever they go out with friends. For Indians, shoes are simply not the default footwear. So unless there is a specific reason to wear shoes, people would just put on their sandals. You also asked about the feet getting dirty in sandals. Well, most people wash their feet after entering their home. Lastly, these things of course have some exceptions. For ex. me and my family wear flip flops inside the house. When going outside for chores like grocery shopping we wear sandals. My dad wears shoes when he's at work.

It's weird how this video is titled 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver', when it's clearly actually Real Time with Bill Maher.

John Oliver should have added context regarding the temple and mosque issue. The mosque that Hindus attacked and tore down was built by order of an Islamic ruler (Babur, an actual invader) in the 1500s over an ancient site sacred to Hindus - the birthplace of Ram. That's why they have been angry about it for a long time. Doesn't excuse violence, but it's important to know that it wasn't a random attack with no history behind it.

Bro, the most shocking fact I learned about your elections is that you guys don't even get a public holiday on voting day. We Indians get a leave on voting day, and I personally got 2 days leave for elections as my office is in a different district from my home, so I had leave on both the day I voted, and the day most of my colleagues voted. I'll admit I was lucky to swing 2 leaves as I have a good understanding with my boss, but 1 of the days would have been mandatorily off for me.

The polls in my country today are open (European election is today) from 7am to 9pm in most places so you can vote before or after work, or do it on your lunch break if you get a permission to vote in a different municipality than the one you live in. Also, there are polls at many public places like train stations, bus stops, town halls, churches, etc, so you will definitely pass one naturally during your daily occupations. Then again we also have this thing called a 40 hour work week so people have time to do other things on a work day. Maybe you should work on that in the States.

There's also a growing number of people who despise this goverment and how they (try to) divide us on the basis of religion. Modi didn't win by a majority this time like he did in 2019 that shows people aren't happy. What sucks is that we dont have a strong opposition party, its the reason modi keeps winning. Its sort of just like the US elections, having to choose between two clowns.

As an Indian while I agree with some of your points on India but most of them are incorrect and misleading to the audience. 1. It is correct that the Ram mandir is built on a place where a mosque stood once but you failed to mention that the mosque was built their by demolition of an ancient temple of lord Ram by Muslim ruler and they use parts of the temple to built that mosque. 2. The buldozer action taken by the CM is in response of action for the crime committed by them and illegal occupation of the land , it is not targeted on muslims only many hindu houses also demolished which you failed to mention like most western media does. 3. And it is true that Modi has told that Congress will take their properties to Muslims but you failed to mention that as per Congress manifesto they will redistribute properties from the rich to the minorities and they indirectly refer that to 2nd largest minority Muslims not other minorities. For more info you can check there manifesto. 4. And for the arrest of Kejriwal you failed to mention that he has openly misused Delhi police for his own purpose, he has arrested many people who have tried to say anything about his corruption, this man was choosen by the people on promise and I am a common man and I will remove corruption but has committed many frods and built his house using Public works department (PWD) budget openly. So the court ordered him jail time.He hasn't won a single seat from Delhi in this election. So many of the things you said are only overview but you have failed to mention background stories and India's history. And for peaceful people you need to research their behaviour in India before assuming anything. You need to visit any area where Muslims are in majority and than asks the minorities there you will get the answer, but judging by the situation in London you may soon got to know the reality.

This episode was all half truths. For example, the bull dozing of illegally constructed houses, while wrong, was targeted at rioters caught on camera vandalizing public property. The mosque at Ayodhya was destroyed because it was built by an Islamic invader 600 years ago by destroying one of the holiest Hindu shrines. Economic progress has helped a lot more than just 80 million people. The terrorist attacks in all parts of India have completely stopped. However, this was not mentioned in this episode. The development of roads and other infrastructure helps everyone and not just the wealthy. But that was mentioned just in passing. John's episode is aimed at non Indians, so he should not assume that his viewers already know about India's recent achievements. He should've covered both sides instead of just criticizing the govt.

They had very very advertisement, their slogan was "abki baar 400 paar" i.e. " This time 400+seats" And that thing made average BJP voter go "why do I need to go, party's gonna win anyway, also the temperature too damn Imma stay at home " thats is one of the major reason BJP lost absolute majority (272) ,they still won majority of seats but bad campaigning killed their chance Also RSS hasn't done anything as bad as NAZI party TBH AIMIM has done worse if you know about RAZAKARS All this video managed to do for me is , If we are being accused of something why don't we just do it?

They are in-fact more correctly referred to as a earthmover/backhoe loader. Also, in India as most of these vehicles are JCB 3DX and related vehicles, they are more commonly referred to as JCB. But yes, Caterpillar, Terex, Hyundai and Tata Machines are also in use.
