That is astounding that you were able to buy that cauldren for $35! An amazing bargain. And it is beautiful. A work of historical art. The quality of iron cookware generally just keeps getting worse, in part because the older pieces are made with virgin iron and newer pieces are made with recycled metals. Absolutely love seafood and that looks delicious Justine. But Ron, when you don't like seafood, you don't like it. That's fair. Love your channels, both of them, and a proud to be a member of both.

Keep you eyes open for Griswold cast iron in antique stores and flea markets. It's not correct for your time frame but it is finely cast iron, thin and it cooks very well.

You just unlocked a hidden childhood memory I completely forgot about! I had a cow jumping jack as a small child too. Mine was a white and brown spotted cow (no bird though) that worked the same way. What's funny is I've never thought about that cow all this time until now and I'm about Ron's age. Thanks for the nostalgic memory!

Hi guys! My grand mother from Alsace (France) had a "Harlequin" jumping jack toy she used to let my brothers and I play with. We played with it so much, one of us busted the strings within the toy. My older brother, then, about 10 years old, quickly dismantled the whole thing, figured out how it worked, stole string from my grandma's kitchen cupboards and fixed it! Phew! My older brother is now an aeronautic engineer in Switzerland.... Go figure! I would not have remembered that toy if you had not mentioned it: thanks for the memories.

If fish is overly fishy smelling, it's a day or two old. I didn't like fish when I was younger. When I moved as an adult, we moved close to a family who runs a commercial fishery. They own a country store and little restaurant where they sell the fish. Freshly caught morning fish eaten for dinner is nothing like grocery store fish. I now like fish. Thanks, Ron, Justine, Mish Mish, and the rooster. ❤ Team turkey and pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

I do hope you like the chowder, Ron! I personally think that it looks *chowdah* this world! 😆 But seriously, regardless of whether you do like it or not, at least you're making an effort to try it. That speaks volumes. One should always try to be open to trying new things. I don't think anybody can try something just once or twice and then say that they dislike it, like it's a universal truth. There are many different ways to prepare and eat every single food on this Earth, and trying something that's a little different from how we know it can potentially change our perspective on it. (Case in point, I'm not very fond of steamed clams, but I really love them raw or fried.) Anyhow, I can't wait to catch the premiere in a few hours! I hope everybody's having a lovely day! Cheers, everybody! 😃

My great grandfather made a sterling silver bowl just like the ones you're using for eating the chowder! It's been passed down in my family for generations now and I love it. We are definitely turkey people (we deep fry it) and I make a giant apple pie each year. I make homemade whole berry cranberry sauce with orange and ginger and I also make roasted onions (sorry, Ron 🤣) and brussels sprouts braised in vinegar, whole grain mustard, and honey. Okay, I'm hungry now!!!

As a Ggerman, I, of course, also grew up with a Hampelmann/Jumping Jack. I have a giant nostalgic Santa one as well as one representing the Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Bremen City musicians which is an old fairy tale of a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster being fed up on their farm, going to Bremen to be musicians there). When you pull the string, they (one sitting on top of the other), all move their heads and tails and such….

Hi Ron and Justine. I'm from Missouri and my wife is from South Texas so we have slightly differing Thanksgiving meals. Typically I grew up with turkey, homemade cranberry sauce (the whole cranberries, not just the juice), sweet potatoes (halves or quarters baked with marshmallows and molasses or brown sugar), perhaps mashed potatoes, bread dressing (using pieces parts/heels from bread loaves), if a big gathering maybe a ham as well, perhaps my grandma's noodles (I can make a meal just from her noodles and mashed potatoes, I miss those as I also miss my grandma), some form of homemade bread/croissant, and a relish tray of some kind. Maybe someone would make green bean casserole. My wife, on the other hand, was virtually the same except there would be corn-bread dressing, sweet potatoes would be fully mashed, baked, and maybe pecans on it. Cranberry sauce came from the can. Pies were pumpkin and/or pecan. My wife's would also include a buttermilk pie (family recipe). Truthfully, turkey (and/or ham), mashed potatoes, maybe a veggie or two from the relish tray, noodles if any were made, bread, and my version of cranberry sauce (which I will be happy to share the recipe) which are the fresh ones, not the can junk. At first my wife was skeptical to try the whole cranberry sauce because she always had the can. After having the whole, she refuses to go back to can. Provecho on your Thanksgiving meal!

We have been grilling pork ribs the past few years, per my parents’ request. And my mom prefers ham at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We sometimes make a boston butt. For myself, I am here for the side dishes at Thanksgiving. I’m just not a huge meat eater. If it were up to me, I’d roast a chicken and seafood of some sort. Seems traditional to me. We do sweet potato bread puddin’ more than pies. But there has to be a chocolate pie for my kids and husband. Blueberry dump cake is incredible.

Vegan Clam Chowder (Gluten-Free) Warm up on a chilly night with this rich, creamy & hearty New England Vegan Clam Chowder. It takes 30 minutes to make & it's easy to prepare, too. Prep Time 15minutes mins Cook Time 30minutes mins Total Time 45minutes mins Course: Main Course, SoupCuisine: Gluten-Free, Vegan Servings: 6 Calories: 246kcal Author: Melissa Huggins Ingredients US Customary Metric Cream Base (see note for alternative) ▢½ cup raw cashews, soaked in water 2-4 hours (*See Note) ▢¾ cup unsweetened soy milk (or any plant-based milk) Mushrooms ▢1 tablespoon vegan butter (or olive oil) ▢8 oz white button mushrooms, cut into ½-inch pieces (or any mushrooms) ▢1 garlic clove, minced ▢1 teaspoon low sodium tamari (sub soy sauce) Soup Base ▢2 tablespoon vegan butter (sub with olive oil) ▢1 medium yellow onion , diced ▢2 celery stalks , diced ▢2 medium carrots , diced or sliced ¼ inch thick ▢2-3 med/large cloves garlic , minced ▢1 teaspoon dried thyme ▢½ cup dry white wine (a vegan variety) ▢4 cups vegetable broth , low sodium ▢3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (gluten-free or regular) ▢2 medium russet potatoes , peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces ▢2 bay leaves ▢2 teaspoons kelp granules or dulse flakes (*see note) ▢1 teaspoon Himalayan salt , more to taste ▢1-2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (*optional) ▢Fresh cracked pepper , to taste Cook Mode Prevent your screen from going dark Instructions Cream Base Blend the soy milk & cashews (discard soaking water) together until very smooth. Set aside. Mushrooms In a large sauce pot over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon butter. When heated, add mushrooms and sauté until the liquid evaporates (about 3 minutes). Now add 1 clove minced garlic and soy sauce. Sauté until the mushrooms are tender & lightly browned. About 2-4 minutes. Remove mushrooms and set aside. Soup Base Wipe out the same pot and return to stove. Heat butter over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Add celery, carrots, garlic & thyme. Sauté about 5-7 minutes or until veggies are tender. Add wine and turn heat up to medium-high to simmer. Once simmering turn heat back to medium. Cook wine down about 3-5 minutes. Stir often. Sprinkle flour over veggies and stir constantly for 30-60 seconds. Stir in broth and add potatoes, bay leaf, kelp granules, and salt. Bring to a simmer for about 10-15 minutes, until potatoes are tender. Discard bay leaves. Turn heat to medium low and slowly stir in cashew cream. Taste for seasoning and add more if needed. Cook for 3-4 minutes and remove from heat. Stir in mushrooms, lemon juice and fresh cracked pepper. Place in your favorite soup bowls & garnish with fresh parsley. Side with crackers or crispy bread. Enjoy! Learn More Notes *To speed up soaking time for cashews: in a small pot, boil water and remove from heat. Add cashews and cover for 15-20 minutes, until softened. To make this cashew-free, omit the Cream Base Step (soy milk and cashews)and replace it with 1 cup of canned lite coconut milk. Add to soup after removing from heat. * If you can't find kelp granules, you can use dulse flakes, dulse granules or break up a small piece of nori. If you don't want the ocean-like flavor, you can omit the seaweed altogether. It will still be delicious! You can also add a teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning. *Prep time doesn't include soaking time for cashews

Ron just doesn't like fish! I can relate, I don't like fish either.

If I had a working hearth and a cauldron I would try making it without the clams/oysters/shrimp/squid/sea urchins/crawdads etc. I don't think that my hotplate and toaster are up to the task. Poptarts and coffee are starting to be a challenge!

There is a Christmas parade in Melbourne, Florida with every book of the Bible. It's beautiful from Jesus on the cross to brides on horses. If a year is skipped the parade can't be continued as a new permit will no longer be issued for "religous " parades. It is heartwarming to see the many wheelchair bound patients lining the street as well as bedbound patients waving from their rooms. And the children excitedly pet the lambs and see their bible stories come to life.

Though I'd love your chowder (I'm thinking of that lemon aroma!), I know how Ron feels. There are foods I can't stand, such as canned peas, overcooked pasta and canned tuna. (Canned peas and mushy pasta are simply gross, and canned tuna smells like cat food!😝) I think that cow jumping jack is so cute! I hope you get to collect more jumping jacks. I'm 68, so I'm very familiar with toys like these. BTW, I used to wonder if housewives at least 120 years ago had wonderful upper body strength because of the ironware they cooked with. I use a rather heavy ironware Dutch oven I inherited from my mom. But now you told me about the lightness and better quality of very old ironware. Thanks!
