I learned how to play Taps on a toy trumpet when I was seven. Everyone thought it was "cute"....except the vets. They never smiled or laughed, they just bowed their heads, looked at the floor and listened. I couldn't understand why....until later.

Yesterday was my grandpa's funeral, he served in Vietnam years ago. He had been battling ALS for 16 months, what started as a tingling in his feet turned into him laying in his death bed, unable to move, only able to make a small grumbling. luckily, unlike many other people, he got to spend his last seconds on this earth with his family. We all knew his time was coming soon, he joked "everyone has their own expiration date!" He used to look around at all his family when they visited and he said, "I never knew this many people cared about me." Even laying on his death bed he joked to lighten the mood of everyone around, in a way my grandpa was outnumbered by all the women in his family, he used to say "I've got to get out of here!" My grandfather loved all the girls in our family, and he showed it. despite having little money he would buy his daughters new cars, despite the cars inevitable fates! laying in his death bed he couldn't hear very well and couldn't turn his head, so my grandma would tell him all the people who were there to see him, my grandma said "all the women are here to see you!" my grandpa with his hysterical sense of humor said in reply, "well, they must be pretty stupid." January 13th, 2:55 P.M. my grandfather could no longer swallow and mucus was building up in his throat and his voice and breathing had become a grumbling noise. At 2:55 he took his final breath, and went silent, his skin slowly became blue, and my grandmother, always by his side, broke down into tears and hugged him one final time. My grandmother was a true fighter as well, she had gone nights without sleep caring for him for 16 months. She went through what most people wouldn't be able to withstand. I and my family are glad that he is out of his pain. no matter what he was always in pain, from back pain to tail bone pain, he could never rest, but now he is at peace and is forever resting.

The first time I ever heard TAPS was @ my brother's funeral in 1968...I was a senior in high school...he was killed in VietNam. I lose it every time I hear it. Takes me back to the day two soldiers knocked on the door to deliver the bad news...he was only 11 days shy of finishing his tour overseas. Those who made it back home were treated poorly...so if you see a soldier be sure to thank them in some way because your freedom is NOT free ! All gave some & some gave all. My brother was only 20 yr. old. If you ever get a chance to visit THE WALL in Washington or THE MOVING WALL that travels the U.S please go..it's a very sobering experience. John M. Brimm is my HERO ❤ Jonesboro, Illinois

I was part of a millitary funeral when i was in the army. I saw first hand how the army took care of an old fellow who had died and his family. Sure its sad when a loved one is lost, but know this the army if you served will be there. Now in my opinion that should happen for any man or woman who was in combat at the front line or behind it. Regardless when you hear millitary taps it sends a cold chill over you each time. At least it should. Thank you to all who served for our country for our freedom's.💝💝💝🗽

He says he doesn’t deserve a big fancy funeral and would rather be cremated and buried in a mason jar (his actual words) which I’m fine with honoring but god dammit after everything he’s done for this country and for this family he deserves so much more than a medal and a nice funeral.

My grandfather passed 11 years ago. He served in world war 2 and was there at the dropping of Hiroshima. He is my hero to this day. I have his medals and badges and display them proudly on my shelf. I was only 3 when he died, I’m fourteen now. I never treated him right, I forced him to get out of his bed and cried to often. But he loved me, so much to the point he gave his footlocker to me and not his sons. I could never have asked for a better grandfather, god bless his soul. I have another grandfather who served in Vietnam and the police force. I show him as much respect as I can give. He was spit on and is still degraded to this day, but service is service. I hope to be a police officer one day.

I've heard too many military salutes to many family and friends who have passed. It's a somber song that touches your heart and soul. May all who served and their families be at peace this memorial day and may all honor all areas of service and not just think it's a bbq free day off

The grandfather of a close friend of mine fought in the Vietnam War too and was a heroic fighter for the freedom of his country. When we were younger he often told us stories about the war. One time one GI nearly killed him, but he gladly survived it:)

we buried a good friend at one of the last military funeral i attended. hearing "taps" after that always reminds me of our folding and my then passing of the flag to another friend - his very emotional father. after the service i turned in my equipment, went home and sat alone in the dark for several hours. after that i could no longer serve as an honor guard. it's been years but it's still very difficult for me to hear it. thank God we were able to bring all my Soldiers home alive.

I was an altar boy serving at my grandpa’s funeral and I was crying the whole way through. Once the taps hit me everything came rushing out. Carrying that cross down, felt like an eternity. Knowing that my loving grandfather was in that casket shattered my heart. My mom came shortly after, and she asked me if I was ok. She said what’s the matter, and it all came rushing out. Appreciate your grandparents while you can. Any moment, that flesh can die.

When Duty calls, they stand. When war falls, arms manned. through grit teeth, they fight. not so gently, into night. with voice raised, fierce strife. with spirit ablaze, sacrifice. no dreamed glory, no please. till the death, no ease. honor to you, my brothers. a full salute, with colors. a folded flag, for mothers. a promise now, to others. a justice served, in vengeance. eye for eye, the sentence. a flowered hill, attendance. a bugler TAPS, remembrance.
