Now we leave it to those who will hopefully take up the bastion in our stead and continue the fight. Semper Fi and thank you for what you've done for this country and myself. God Bless you sir.

I miss him already, I will miss hearing his stories of his days in the Corps. It is like muscle memory, I keep thinking I can see him again, go to his house, call him on the phone. But no, he is not there. I miss him so much......I am going to move in to his house and live there. It's a price we can never refuse.. no matter the cost it's one of the few things worth the ultimate price. His courage bravery and service are to be honored, revered and most of all remembered. My dad was also there as a Green Beret (one of the very first Green Beret ever)..and did.two tours. He retired from the Army as a Lt. Col.. He died as the covid restrictions hit. He was interred At Arlington Nat'l Cemetary about 2 years later. He was a HEROIC man too. Once he was the CO of a soldier in FT. Benning (where I was born) who had been shot in 3 places while in Vietnam, but it takes three Purple Hearts to not to have to go back, so he was being sent back. He went to a local bar and the MPs had to drag him back to the base. He got up on a turret screaming ''what are you gonna do, send me back to Vietnam?". My dad had himself arrested instead of this man. We watched the 10 part Ken Burn's special on Vietnam. In part 8 and 9 a white-haired General is interviewed. My dad said he briefed him on many occasions. Then my dad said tearfully, 'they lied to me''. He had a nightmare about Vietnam that night and fell out of bed and broke his hip and subsequently died. He NEVER spoke of his actions in Vietnam otherwise and I did not grill him on the specifics about what he felt he was lied to about as he seemed too tore up. My dad's experiences taught me to never accept the narrative without question, no matter if it's firsthand or not or from a high ranking 'official'. Quite the gift. He had a few huge flaws as a father, I won't sugar-coat it but I forgave him. Condolences.

Try to pack up your elitism long enough to realize that once someone creates art and releases it into the world, they permanently lose any ability to dictate what it means to anyone who encounters it. This lovely work has obviously been encountered far and wide, and has come to mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. Every war is different, and every war is the same.

I’m a Vietnam veteran, and I belong to a squad of other veterans who preform a Soldier’s cross ceremony at veteran funerals. I am very proud & honored to be part of it. Sometimes we do the ceremony in conjunction with some active duty personnel, one funeral had a bagpiper playing this song & a Master Sergeant singing it, as a person of Scottish blood, I’m not ashamed to say I shed a tear. There’s something about the song that is very powerful & pulls at you.

I served in Afghanistan and Iraq. I lost friends and colleagues. I feel a deep connection to those who serve(d) , those who died and those who survived. I am permanently disabled, but this powerful sense of kinship helps. Most of us didn’t care about the politics. We cared about serving our nation and protecting/helping the innocent caught in the crossfire. This song and these images touch my soul.

Marine vet. This song and winter born are 2 songs that never fail to make me cry. They explain the how and why of military service .Why we are so proud of serving and how we serve to protect that others will not have to suffer. That when we go into the ground we can do it with the pride the we carried on the honor of those who went before who stood for whats right knowing the price. My greatest fear for my country is not the politicians who were always ass hats, but that it is difficult to find anyone under 40 who understands what service is much less why its necessary.

I am 69 years old now. I spent 20 years in the United States army, I was just a medic. After retiring from the army I went to college and became a licenced mental health provider. I worked at the Bellingham Washington vet centre with combat veterans and victims of trauma for 19 years. I can tell you that across-the-board the men who were in battle against other young men who were in battle typically had a high rate of respect for their enemy. I think maybe one of the things that helps us heal from such things as combat is the genuine respect that we have for our adversaries. It was a true honour to listen to the stories of those men who served in World War II as my father did. It was an honour to listen to the stories of the men who served in Korea, gosh they had it rough. Is the men and women who served in Vietnam the men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan Somalia Malawi Mali they all deserve to have their stories listened to this is how we help them heal to hear what they've been through and welcome them back welcome them back genuinely as people who served in the harshest environments with the grossest tasks at hand And survived. God-bless the ones who did not survive on any side give them honour that they deserve.

This is a tune taken from an old Scottish Gaelic song. We fought the Romans and English for hundreds of years and still stand. Unfortunately weakness has crept into the new generation and the experience of loss and death are alien to them. A new and ungrateful generation rule now and respect has been lost. Respect to all brothers an sisters. Fight on. An edit. Though sung by a Scotsman, this song has been adopted by the U.S and you know what, it serves all of us well. When we're in the ground, we'll see no sun. Money, religion or whatever you want or have will mean nothing. Live your life well and love if you can. Forget all this new shit being forced upon us. Lay me doon, I'll no be afraid.

When I was growing up all my friends talked about their dads being at Normandy or in the Pacific. My Dad talked about his time in Panama and partying. I was ashamed of him. Then one time after work during the summer I turned 18 he said lets get some beer. We went to a bar and had some beer. Then he looked at me and said I can not believe I made it back. I thought from Panama. Then I found out my Dad flew 37 missions on a B-17 as a waist gunner and a radio guy. We went home and he showed me his pictures. I felt ashamed and proud. I did 8 years in the Army from 81 to 89. Got out and joined the Guard in 2000. Did two deployments to Iraq. What felt great when I came back was him saying to me how proud he was of me. RIP DAD.

DANCING IN THE GRAVE YARD Aren't we always playing in the graveyard or just biding time? Often green like a pasture, always waiting places to rest in the here after Oldest game in town trying to stay on the upside of down, many thoughts on final days to varied to count the ways, from basic or sublime We stay as time ticks away, daily drifting on the edge many bound by some religious pledge will our final words be ours or pleasantly passed on by some unknown pastor? Not always a plan or death in the first degree no odds on a final decree, set thoughts aside and be free, no test for the final cut be it sudden or divine Many memories and thoughts hover over all those plots, simple and silent, flecks of color from flowers add life, so silent if we listen do we hear our pain or their laughter Fountain of sorrow won't wait until tomorrow, will we take in its beauty or be drowned in it, golden faucet doesn't flow with poison water, no time to redesign Many Worry about falling at the time of their calling, r.i.p. rest in peace, or r.i.p. repelled into purgatory, read a page or a big book never know that final chapter Will we take in its beauty or be drowned in it, no need to close your eyes set aside what you despise, why hide under the clouds when you can grow in the sunshine Mark time as a saint, still pass with a faint, we make the mark not the mausoleum or in a potter's field, use the meadow and flowers to become a dancer Life as a gift, count it as a win if we understand, feeling it as a joyous occasion, we are left as simply human, learn to balance the pain often our biggest gain Destiny not always in our hands, to many ways left unexplained be it day or night, today or tomorrow, can't run away, fate always finds us no matter how much we discuss or live silently or have an enhancer Are we ever ready for a giant wave to take it all away or prefer to drift back into a safe eddy? The sky is filled with redemption while the ground takes all with little exception R.C.

You are not mourning them. You are mourning your loss of them in your life. Those who do not grieve a great loss like the loss of brother in arms or other loved ones have no soul. Mourn your loss for it is yours. But celebrate their lives and sacrifices. There is no greater love then to lay your life on line for people you will never know. Every day I celebrate the lives of my brothers that have gone much to soon. Rest well brothers for I will continue to stand the watch. I will see you again when it is my turn to return home. (sad i have to include this statement but.) Just because I did not use a female pronoun does not mean they are not included in this sentiment . When I served Women were not allowed in combat arms so I have never known the loss of a sister in arms. I speak from my experiences and losses.

I weep for the passing of comrades, and for the failures of those who govern nations who make it necessary for soldiers to have to die. They did not fail us, we failed them/ And so the cycle goes...we ignore history, we allow selfish people to have positions of power and the brave are sacrificed. Yes, celebrate the brave, and mourn their loss at the hands of far lesser men.

Freedom isn't Free, we are Free because of the brave and those who sacrificed their lives for us. It's about loss and honoring those losses. Sometimes it's easy to forget that Memorial Day weekend isn't just about picnics, parties, bbques and the unofficial start to summer. There’s no sacrifice other to someone than our selfless U.S. military veterans. I’m exceedingly grateful for the millions of veterans who have devoted seasons of life to preserving our freedoms. And this weekend I’m especially mindful and honor those who have given the ultimate measure of devotion by sacrificing their lives for the sake of our nation. Put your American Flag up in front of your house/yard and be proud to be in the USA! GOD BLESS the USA, GOD BLESS the world...
