This video is part 2 on how to use a tap and die set in which I cover using the die to rethread a bolt. A tap and die set is an essential tool for the home mechanic and can be bought for around $50. For times when the head of a bolt snaps off and it must be drilled out or when the threads on a bolt are mangled, it really is an invaulable tool. The main thing when using the die is to make sure when you start to thread the bolt the die is seated correctly. If it is not even when you begin to turn the die, the threads will come out crooked.

Besides the audio being too low, this is actually one of the best die demos on KZread. Thanks.

Great video, you explanation is very clear! I'm curious is it possible to to use a die set to resize an exsiting bolt smaller (ie from a 3/8" to 1/4")? I actually have a need to create a special bolt, part threaded 3/8" coarse, and the other part 1/4" fine

hi i have a question. I crossthreaded just a little bit of the beginning on a bolt for the strut of my car. Can i use a tap and die to just fix the crossthreaded part in the beginning(about 2-4 treads)? Also how far do i have to turn the die, all the way past the crossthreaded part and through the good thread?

It seems really easy to turn the treader… Is it a soft metal bolt? Would it be that easy with one of the most solid metals? (The highest grade bolts?)

Man, you need to mount that vise to something; bolt that vise down to something you don't mind scratching up!! You are destroying your nice wood table just to do a video showing us a process which there are thousands or maybe even hundreds of thousands of other people with videos on KZread showing how to do the same thing. I'd say, that's dedication to your viewers and hell to pay for you to your wife for screwing up the nice table! Or did you just buy her a big fat diamond to take her mind off the scratches you made in the table to shoot a video? LOL, thanks for the video.
