Helicoil | Thread repair
Helicoils or thread inserts are very useful if a tapped hole has become stripped of it's threads. By using the thread repair kit it is possible to repair the stripped thread so that the hole can accept a threaded bolt again. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/

I used a helicoil repair on a stripped exhaust stud insert on my Harley Shovelhead. I used a drop of locktite on the coil. This was over 5yrs back,no problems. Love these kits.
Very simple explanation. No nonsense, no fuss. Exactly what I needed!

Great Video, Never had to do a Thread repair until my Brake Caliper bracket stripped a bolt, Tried a Tap but thread had gone, Have ordered a Helicoil Kit and now feel more confident, Thanks for showing and explaining what to do, cheers.
You're the only one i've seen so far to use proper cutting fluid with the tap. You win the prize. Nice to see it done properly! Now to fix the cylinder head on my dolomite...
Had the pleasure of watching a guy in my shop use one of these. Had to watch a video on it. Fantastic commentary and instruction!! Thank you so much.

On the fitting tool there is a ring which is held down by a small allen screw. You should move this down so you push on the back of the insert when fitting, otherwise if you push too hard the coils separate and this makes fitting much harder. But otherwise nice video

Nice work and video! If I may add something, it would be this: If the job allows it and you have access to a press drill, use it! If no press drill available take extra precautions to ensure that you drill AND tap your damaged hole straight!! Installing an Helicoil insert at an angle slightly off 90 degrees will sometimes prevent from fastening your parts back together. Especially when you have many holes that needs a proper alignment with each other. If you repair through threads, on a hole that must be sealed (thinking of exhaust manifold bolts here) it's good measure to use a thread sealant such as loctite 2620. On your helicoil before you insert into your freshly oversized and tapped hole. Do not learn it the hard way like I did.

These work great in pinch for not so heavy duty use. In an industrial environment don't expect them to last. Best used to get a machine running now while you plan a proper repair later.

Yes. However, you must remember to use a very thick grease. Thick grease catch metal filings, which could get into the cylinder. The second important issue is the lenght of helikol. It can not be too long. At the end - watch out for the final breaking helikoli - not drop this part, into the cylinder. This method already repaired many threads without removing the engine head.
I gave you a clap 👏 at the end of the video ! Good man

great video!! thanks for posting!! Just wonder if the "Helicoil way" will sort my problem. Need to make new threads inside my BMW aluminium engine block. What do you think? Will it survive that pressure inside the engine?? Will it or won't??
I subscribed to you now. Many good howto's 'ere! :D
When you need to drill, work your way up to the size needed as indicated on the kit. Drill straight. Use a thread pitch gauge if needed. Get a drill bit set. A Time Sert kit is better because it locks into the hole. Use Loctite High strength sealer. Use wheel bearing grease on the tap. Clean the tap often. On this insert kit pictured, set the depth to 1/2 turn below the surface using the set screw on the tool. Autozone has kits like this. Amazon has kits with about 6 kits in one case.

thanks for the vid. I use helicoils since a long time and were always successful with them. Unfortunately i have to say 1. Helicoils original come in blue boxes and its a registered brand/technology from germany! Buy Original! 2. tapping thread should be done IMO when ever possible vertical to make 100% tapping straight. 3. its 1,5 turns in and 1 back, i couldnt hear the cracking sound of the tapping tool. thats what i learned 28years ago in mechanic school in germany.

what if you don't have the room for a bigger bolt? like on castings were their is generally thin walls around threads? or internal parts of engine were the larger head of the bigger head will interfere with gasket seals/moving parts?

@ultimatehandyman The ones I used last were German and they came as a kit with some locktight type adhesive and they gave a max torque you could tighten them to. They were bloody expensive when you used a few sizes. What do these work out at these days?
good explanation :)

I've not heard of helicoil before, i got the wurth time sert kit because you cut a recessed seat level with the top of the piece being re-theaded, in aluminium it stops more stripping also as it's cinched tight with the new thead insert & doesn't realy just on the cut thead & surrounding area as much, plus there's no mistake of pushing the new thread through & loosing it inside where you can't get. What is that last part with the punch supposed to do chez.
Great vid

Thank you, very helpful video. One question, how do you ensure that the helicoil insert does not unscrew again while undoing the bolt?
@adam77480
4 жыл бұрын
I would think a thread lock would be an option but if that area is hot, you would need to use something temperature tolerant.
It's good to see the working of Thread Repair Kit , But technically it would not appropriate to insert the inserts without adjusting the stopper .
Cool english accent. Good video too. Gonna have a go at this now thanks!

Excellent video, perfectly clear. I need to do a sump and as it's a blind hole, I was wondering about the tang, looked through the previous comments and saw you mention it could be impossible to get it out of a blind hole. Do you think if I tied some cotton to it and punched it through I may be able to get it? It seemed to come off so easy that I don't want to leave it on.
@ultimatehandyman
9 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the tang will be touching the material at the bottom of the blind hole, which means if you punch it the tang won't move as it will be hitting the metal. You might be able to snap it off with some long nose pliers?
Genius. Top vid cheers.

Good vid.
thanks for your instruction video example.
I have threaded a head bolt in old triumph alloy barrels, will these be as strong as it needs to be ie; 20 - 25 pound torque?
i machine a lot of plastics and non ferrous metals as well as steel, and i have to use helicoils to strengthen holes for bolts. Included in the helicoil kit is a pressure collar that fits over the isertion tool and butts upto the coil itself, this collar exerts even pressure for insertion.why didnt you use it?
very good job..

+Tadeusz “tadak” Bryniczka Thanks for the comment ;-)
I think you should adjust the collar so the tang is half way the inserter's tool groove...
Thanks!
I need to do this for my 3800 series 2 , the power steering pump won’t hold in on the block. Every time I slap the belt it pulls it back out so this will be my next attempt using this method fingers crossed 🤞🏽

M5 x 0.8 m5 is the thread size, 0.8 is the thread pitch (the distance in mm between the highest point on the threads)
i got a #2 plug blown in a 99 4.6 e150 smh and i was wonderin if u got a answer for not having the heads and front motor taking off
I think i paid £90 for my kit :...( & an extra M12 tap can't remember what for now though, the inserts & taps aren't that much now though. I can usualy find both pretty cheap on that bay place in diff'rnt metal types for the inserts i just need an M5 x 0.8 & M6 x 1 which keeps eluding me at a decent price. I'll have to look into a helicoil kit & prices when i get home to the uk. Thanks chez.
How "fluid tight" are these heli-coil? I have a stripped out oil check bolt on my dirt bike. If the heli-coil isn't tight enough oil will leak out around the threads.
how tight can bolts get with heli-coil? I ask because I need to do this to an atv spark plug, and I was curious how tight it would end up getting
Thanks for the clear instructions. Quick questions if I may; How do you break the end off and get it back out in a blind hole, and is there any good in using a thread locker on the helicoil to avoid it from coming out later?
@ultimatehandyman
8 жыл бұрын
+scsirob You are welcome. Sometimes you can remove the tang with some long nose pliers, other times it will not break off in blind holes- Sometimes I just leave the tang where it is. Yes you can use a thread locker if you like, Loctite make good thread locking compounds that will do the job. Thanks for the comment

You can find tang-free Helicoils.
Great short no fuss video. So just to make sure, if I want to use a M8 bolt the kit's helicoil and drill will be slightly larger than M8? Just don't understand the concept of a helicoil if you already using a tap. Thnaks.
@ultimatehandyman
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the drill bit in the kit is larger than 8mm, so that it can accommodate the heli-coil. I have made a more recent video here- kzread.info/dash/bejne/k5uqpqich8TRZ6w.html&t Thanks for the comment 👍
I stripped the threads to one of the bolts for the sump cover on a engine. It screws in fine. But once it gets somewhat tight it won't tighten any farther. Cause you said this won't work well in a blind hole. Is it possible to buy a shorter bolt so that it doesn't get into the bad threads. Pleas respond it makes a baseball sized puddle in a day.
Thanks very easy to follow! Possible to use a Heli coil on soft alloy?

What would you do in a situation where the thread length needs to be longer than a single insert? There doesn't seem to be different length inserts so im guessing the only solution would be to screw one in on top of the other.
@andygelsthorpe7518
4 жыл бұрын
I know this reply is rather late, but different lengths are available on ebay- I've just checked.
I'm getting ready to use this for the first time on a stripped bolt hole for a drive belt tensioner. Great explanation i feel more comfortable attempting this now. I just had a question about the inserts they all seem to be the same size do i need to combine multiple coils for a longer hole? And would I be able to break the tang on a blind hole? I only have about a 3cm hole I am rethreading.
@ultimatehandyman
2 жыл бұрын
No, never try to use more than one insert, as it's likely that the bolt will lock up. You can get longer inserts, but they might not be widely available. You can't break the tang in a blind hole, it will be fine. You can thread lock the insert into position, too! Best of luck with it.

I have m12 holes and m10 bolts ( not by choice), would an m12 helicoil be enough to allow the bolts to grip? Cheers

Hey Chaz. did that work for you. I was thinking of trying it on my rear brake caliper (for car) but worried about 1. any debri going into the piston chamber and 2 if the bit tapped off the helicoil leaves anything in the way of the brake line chamfered end? How did you get on?
@baldiebiker

bvowens sorry for late reply don't log in very often. Mine was one of the bolts into the caliper not the fluid line, would think it best to take caliper off and piston out to clean it out.
