#dhrupadmusician #indianclassicalmusic #meditativemusic The Sangīt Saar is a musical treatise, one could consider it the Shastra of Classical music, written in a continuous poetic couplet or Chaupaayi format and not in Sthaayi-antara-abhog-sanchaari format. It describes the essentials of Raaga Sangeetin different parts like - Naad Lakshana, swar parichay, graam murchhana and so on. For a simple musician like me, it is a powerful piece of writing, allowing for intense internalization.
I found the handwritten Sangīt Saar in the crumbling pages of a century old manuscript called - sangeet benode (1913).
The manuscript mentions that the Sangīt saar is " Tansen-krit" or created by Tansen. It begins with the following verse -
Dwai prakaar ke naad hain,
Raakhe sur muni jaan,
tansen so karat hai,
bahu-vidhi time bakhaan
this can be loose translated as -
there are two types of Naad, as the seers and saints have seen and known, and so Tansen will describe them, in many different ways.
