Tank design: two overlooked aspects

I discuss a trait of tank armament that deserves more attention, and The Chieftain contributes his own tank design aspect that gets underestimated.

    you can quantify optics and camouflage/ stealth capacity. with optics your numbers would mainly deal with the resolution and sharpness of an image. with stealth capabilities, you would work more with how much does it reduce visibility to a given tool. how much warmer is the outer skin to the surroundings, what is the radar cross section to this type of radar.

    Well, you _can_ quantify optics; procurement do when they specify the optics for their new vehicles, after all. You have magnification, angle of view, resolution; for night-vision, dynamic range; for IR, some number describing the difference in temperature that can be displayed. Too many numbers, I expect, and not easily translatable into tank-killing. Is a 5x scope almost twice as good as a 3x scope? If my IR can show differences in temp of 1°, is that really five times better than one that can only show 5° differences? The other way to quantify it, as The Chieftain suggests, is to count the tanks seen vs the ones missed. But the only way to do that is to either have lots of battles and count the stats (and somehow accounting for the differences in the vehicles being spotted, and the training of the crews spotting and trying to avoid being spotted), by which time your information is old news, Or, you could have some kind of standardised tests to rate the equipment. Good luck with that one.

  • @seanrea550

    @seanrea550

    with any type of optic it is with the skill of the user as much as the availability of the tool. i would say a commander with a pair of binoculars functions as an optical system, how can we tell which binoculars are better than others, magnification and clarity. more magnified generally gives you a more narrow field of view but better details. a camera will work off of magnification but the clarity becomes redefined as the resolution of the image captured. and the more specialized the tool becomes the more you have to look at, but the point remains optics can be quantified.

    It’s not a design issue but a highly trained and competent crew is a major factor in the value of that tank on the battlefield. One at Yakima firing center I had to go out to the site of a two tank collision. They were doing a night march and the lead driver got lap full of night vision optics because he forgot to secure it properly and bounced off when he hit a bump in the road. I’m pretty sure he was hitting the high notes all night long. His gun (in travel lock) lanced the tank following him. after he stomped on the brakes. No one died nor did the turret come off but it definitely jacked that turret up. There were gallons of what looked like hydraulic fluid splashed all over the place. Dude was in deep doo doo.

    How about drawing a circle around the tank, assessing the angles of vision each optic can cover and valuing it in a number of degrees out of 360. Bonuses for fully traversing independent optics.

    I think the problem is that it's still a lot more complicated than that, even ignoring types of optics and their ease of access/use. The vertical aspect of your field of view is important too, both to see what's above the tank and what's so close to the tank that it might be below the line of sight of optics. There's probably still a way to add all of that up if we pull out the trigonometry or whatever, but I'm not sure how useful it would actually be in the end.

    I'd argue that crew comfort and ergonomics are the most underrated. In a cramped and badly laid out turret with controls dotted here there and everywhere you'll struggle to get anything done, even if you have the best engine, the thickest/best laid out armour and the most powerful gun. With bad ergonomics the crew will be working against the vehicle, thus leading to them not being able to use its strengths to the fullest.

    I remember reading something some time ago about MIGs given to Soviet allies vs the fighters given to US allies during the 60s and 70s, like the F-5. The MIGs were better on paper, some significantly, than the F-5 and often matched the fighters used by the US themselves. Where the MIGs fell down, however, was ergonomics. The pilot of a MIG just couldn't make the full use of his fighter, while the F-5 pilot could. The air to air battles ended up being generally fairly even, due to ergonomics. Now if I could just find the source I got that from.... It's damned annoying when I can't remember where I found something!

    Availability would be my most underrated characteristic of a tank in my opinion... What good is a tank, if it ain't there when you need it. Availability is broken down into several categories; production - no general would be content with 4 tanks. Cost - what else would a general rather have then a tank for the money. Fuel efficiency - the Abrams tank gets half a mile to the gallon... Of jet fuel... This is acceptable only because we have the ability to support that need. Mobility - if it can't beat the terrain how can you expect it to beat the enemy. Of these producibility would probably be the most important aspect. The T-34 had physical gaps in the hull where the metal didn't line up right from the production line. Rivets we're missing in places and weld marks were sloppy Many we're made without gun sights, telling the Crew to use Kentucky windage in those cases. Many we're not paineted at all. Coming out of the factory rust red. The controls were crude and the idea of crew comfort was a joke.... And the German getting shot by it's machingun didn't care about any of that. And the soldiers who were huddled behind that moving steel wall taking all the enemy fire didn't care about it's color. It was made to do a job, and was made to be there when the guy on the ground needed it... A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. And it is for that reason why it is one of, if not THE greatest tank ever made.

    Most underrated trait. Reverse gears, or lack there off. Say what you want about how great the Cromwell and Churchill are. But when your maximum reverse speed is capped to a single mile per hour. Who though that was a good idea? The Cromwell can drive almost 40 miles an hour forwards, you've come up on the enemies flank place a good shots in Jarries side not to fall back, and reposition for the next attack, but what's this your suddenly being outpaced by your nannies walker. Changing all the road sides in Britism wouldn't have halter the German Tiger because they could have backed up in a timely manner before they eventually broke down a ways up the road. Unless the single reverse gear was a secretly geniuses invention by an engineer who wanted more excuses to have tea breaks. "Oh blimey, we tuck a wrong turn. It'll take us an hour to get back to the main road. Best to put the kettle on and brake out the biscuits."

    EndlesNights I think it was more like 2mph, which is about the same as the Panther I think. One of the reasons for having a slow reverse was to allow the tanks to turn on the spot (gearbox can only do so much!) which is really useful in urban environments, it also mitigates the slow reverse a bit.

    I would say that two of the most under appreciated design features of tanks (and ones rarely discussed in computer games) are ease of servicing and ease of repair. Maintaining control of the battlefield after a fight is crucial, because you can recover damaged tanks and repair them (or strip them for parts). The Sherman is often disparaged for not having as heavy armament or armor as German tanks. However, the Sherman was far easier to maintain and repair, so they could be returned to the fight quicker.

  • @anttihuhtala5840

  • @krmould

    Agreed. I have seen the Leopard II where I worked. A team of trained technicians can swap the entire powerpack in under one hour in the middle of a field (with use of a crane on an Armoured Recovery Vehicle). They only do basic maintenance on the engine inside the tank. If there is a major problem, they can pull engine completely out and have full access to work on it.

  • @anttihuhtala5840

    @anttihuhtala5840

    It's like comparing M4 sherman and bradley maintenance. And we know how that story goes. But if only Sherman would have had good attributes of panther... or panther good atributes of sherman. btw I once heard argument about tracks between Leopard and T-72... Later one is far more prone to throw its tracks off. But then again, getting those back on, is matter of dosen minutes while with leopard... it takes much longer... more than an hour. Although its very difficult to get them off on first hand on well maintained Leopard.

  • @krmould

    @krmould

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yep, I totally agree. Everything in tank design is a compromise. The classic one is armament vesus armor versus mobility (pick any two). Modern tanks have come a long way and now you can (for the most part) have all three. Certainly tracks are another challenging part of designing a tank. Some of the problems can be avoided with good crew training.

  • @anttihuhtala5840

    @anttihuhtala5840

    Did you see my recent reply to this video? You might like that. And yes you are correct, but... that holy triangle is not everything no longer. There is so much more that matters and that can make difference. For example... things mentioned on this video, then crew training as you mentioned, intelligence, also.. perhaps tank being able to use drone would be lot too. And then there are things we have not even considered. Like, what about if tanks could be located without actually seeing those? I believe that it is already possible! btw.. Crew training truly makes some difference. It makes operating tank, safer and much more effective. Also.. training is not only about knowing... crowing into routines of doing things right way... and to have that working chemistry with your crew. Hell.. that matters too. Try to do things with new crew and that is way more slow and might have awkward issues. Like, crewmember not understanding what you actually want or why.

Both games are based on using the map/terrain to your advantage and thats it
