Tamiya 1/48 Fairey Swordfish Mk.II

Hi KZread,
In this video I am building Tamiya's lovely Fairey Swordfish Mk.II
In the video I use a mix of Mr Hobby, Tamiya, AK Interactive, Abteilung 502, Ammo by Mig, Vallejo and Microscale Industries products. I use Tamiya and Mr Hobby paints to paint the main surfaces of the model and most of the weathering is done using my favourite Abteilung 502 oils.
Please also follow me on Instagram for my build updates:

And follow me on Facebook for updates regarding my shop in Somerset, UK.

Thanks for watching.

It's hard to believe that a torpedo from one of these Fairey's spelled the downfall of the Bismark. It was a torpedo launched from one of these planes the hit the Bismark's rudder causing it run in circles. In order to launch the torpedo from the air without destroying it from the impact with the water they had to fly so low over the water that they were almost touching the wave tops. One of the crew members had to hang over the side to see how close they were to the water and give the signal to launch. All of this occurred in the North Atlantic with launches and landings on pitching carrier decks in lousy weather. Hopefully anyone who sees this model will explore the stories of the plane and the brave men who flew them.

It’s not that great a stretch of the imagination when one considers that basically the same thing happened to the Musashi, sister ship of the Yamato.

Very nice build! A tip to avoid knocking over paint bottles is to wrap some kitchen foil around the bottle and then crush it into a firm collar that effectively widens the base of the bottle. The bottle will easily lift out so you can just swap bottles into the collar as you use them.

My late father in law would have loved this. He flew as an observer in stringbags, shagbats and avengers (amongst other aircraft) during and after the war. He was on the Implaccable as part of the British Pacific fleet. Went in the sea twice but was rescued both times and survived the war and achieved the rank of Lt commander.

@@stevebettany8778 Steve - my father survived two crash landings in Swordfish - one on an airfield and one on HMS Illustrious and was shot down, crashed in the sea and survived that too. He always said he had confidence that a Swordfish would 'get you through' (!) To look at it nowadays, I have to say I'm not sure I'd have had his faith .... mind you, he was far less complementary about the Barracuda, his comments on which are unprintable 😅

This is a standout even amount the many extremely talented modelers here on KZread. So many of the models I see these days have what I call a hyperrealistic look. It’s like every rivet has to stand out in stark relief and the colors are often just this side of lurid. I’m not knocking those modelers (they are all vastly more talented than me) but I really appreciate this simply superb effort.

Great video, and a fantastic job at making a fairly monochrome paint scheme look interesting and with great texture to draw the eye to the appropriate places! Also, my full bottle spill was "Wash for Interiors" right at the start of COVID-19, so it took months to get a replacement.
