    When will people realize that colleges have wholistic application proccesss that examines students for criteria other than test scores? Having a perfect SAT score is not, and should not, be your one way ticket to an IVY league admission. The idea that black students are less deserving of their spots at elite institutions than their asian and white counterparts is absurd. You have no idea what these hypothetical "more deserving" students wrote for their college essays, their extracurricular involvement, or how successfully they were able to communicate their future life goals. Are asians discriminated against in admissions. Studies have revealed that that is likely true. But trying to discredited the accomplishments of black students while trying to advocate for other minority groups is nothing more than the same old tired racist narrative that this country has been pushing for generations - that blacks are less intelligent and less worthy of success. I'm sure any of the black students at Harvard are more extraordinary and more likely to help improve the world than any miserable person in this comment section crying "Affirmative Action!".

    And it should be higher except schools limit the amount asian students. Asian academic performance has been on a STEEP INCREASE, but asian enrollment numbers at elite universities have actually DECREASED. Makes no sense. Look at caltech and berkeley. Both top schools that don't discriminate. Asian enrollment numbers at those schools have exploded.

    California is also the largest hub of Asian-Americans. It's also a school who's academic intake is FAR superior to other schools yet pails in comparison when actually ranked in categories like, alumni salary, overall fame of alumni, prominence in government roles, networks in the business world, etc. AA works! It's only a matter of time before the very liberal California passes a law reinstating AA!

Anyway, it's quite odd that some people in the comments talk about this man going to this school because of affirmative action when many white people fair well in life because they're white and they come from families that have been able to pass on their wealth. And, aren't most students at Ivy Leagues legacy students? I wish all brilliant black high school seniors would turn up their noses to attending the Ivy's to go to an HBCU.

I would rather hear from students at a public university that have a foot in the real world instead of kids in a bubble that think they can stop police brutality through dance 😪

  • @robertrush987

    @robertrush987

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hey Rusty Shackleford, I'm the kid in the video you think doesn't have a foot in the real world. Appreciate your comment and wanted to clarify some points. For one I was born, raised, and still live in the South Bronx where the probability of attending, let alone finishing college is less than 10%. A part of that reason is due to the fact that there are few people who have had the opportunity that I had, who go back and provide a framework for others to do the same. I agreed to be a part of this project in order to show that it is indeed a possibility and returned home to my Borough to work on developing that for the youth who live here. I don't know if you watched the video, but I never said police brutality could be solved through dance. I instead used dance as a medium for 1) young black men to take ownership of their bodies and 2) as an expressive force that illustrates pain, frustration, and solace through embodiment. Though they certainly exist, I assure you I am not blind nor am I distant from the realities of the real world and would be willing to talk with you at length anytime :)

    I agree up to the kids in a bubble thing. If you know Harvard level talent you know that even though they can draw a sheltered class of student, they produce people making serious moves at many levels of society. My roommate from college went to Harvard law and now runs one of the best Public Defender's divisions in the country. We both graduated from a relatively elite private college, and I spent more than 6 years as a public defender, making my reputation winning...not selling clients out. I've since moved on and I'm in ministry overseas. But I've got more successful friends who came from real black neighborhoods, to elite institutions, and are still as black as they were when they left. I've seen men almost choked out for thinking otherwise. So yep these schools accept some soft, watered down kids of color. But so do state schools, who are also producing sheltered kids just wishing they could get into an Ivy. I didn't have the grades to get in, but that was my fault. I hated to study. I'm still impressed with kids who get in. Even though sometimes I'm like...that kid, really? These schools produce talent...and they've earned their reputation for a reason. Moreover, when they pull us out of our neighborhoods to go to these private schools, there's a reason we don't fit in. You don't lose the hood overnight...if ever. Most of these kids aren't hood, but they aren't all sheltered.

    Focusing too much on the skin color or the nationality of students can actually put to shadow their real potential and capability to be at Harvard. These debates on the number of black students at Harvard or the number of asian students at Harvard only increase the fact that those students stay defined by their ethnicity. Instead on questioning whether Harvard accepts enough black students, we should question whether Harvard accepts enough capable students. We should live in a society where ethnicity is not even a defining factor, and all these debates lead to the opposite.

    Harvard is in a position to fill each freshman class with quantitatively perfect students five times over. With the leverage they have, they’re at liberty to precisely tailor the racial/ethnic/socioeconomic makeup of the student body. Why wouldn’t they take advantage of this? Studies have shown that diverse classrooms have a wide range of benefits to students across the board. It might seem unfair to white and Asian 18-year-olds, but guess what? Harvard’s creed isn’t “be fair to teenagers.” People who are smart enough to go to Harvard tend to do just fine in life. There are plenty of other private universities and state schools that offer great opportunities to its students. To your point about obsessing over differences in ethnicity: America’s economy and class structure was built on the free labor of African slaves. Since around 1876 (the end of reconstruction) the US government has systematically kept black folks on the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder via voter disenfranchisement, redlining - which prevented generations of African Americans from investing in real estate - to the crack epidemic and subsequent war on drugs, which was LITERALLY instigated by the US government. And this is without even mentioning the litany of cultural barriers created by white society. You might be thinking that Harvard has nothing to do with all this, but it has everything to do with this. Private universities act as the gate keepers to America’s upper class. Their wealth and power was built, as I’ve said, by 100s of years of exploitation and disenfranchisement of black and brown folks. They can either ignore this fact by maintaining the status quo, or they can help young people from historically oppressed families become the leaders of tomorrow. In my opinion, they aren’t doing this nearly as much as they should

It's all a big orchestra. Furthermore, so much for that leverage because still they end up taking not very intelligent kids like the guy in this video. Clearly it's all about his bullshit story, south bronx south bronx south bronx bla bla bla. As someone who's known him I can say he's a snide piece of shit that didn't deserve to go to Harvard. @@guesswho1352 I agree that private unis are a big orchestra, but you also can't deny the impact that a Harvard degree has on an individual's life. Sure, I think the white guys who run Harvard want to *seem* like they're doing good, but at the same time they're *actually* doing good on a student-to-student basis. Not to say that if you get into Harvard it's a guarantee that you'll get out, but at least you were given the opportunity, and it's an opportunity many have capitalized on. I don't get your point re: pitting race against race. Can you point me towards the part of the application where it says "Please explain why you deserve this slot more than students of other races?" Finally, kind of a snide pos move to proclaim that this kid doesn't "deserve" to go to Harvard? Who asked you? What metric are you using to decide that? 18 year-olds are unilaterally snide and a little dumb, and every university campus in this country is chock full of kids who don't "deserve" to be there. Who cares about "deserve?" The question universities ask re: each application is "What VALUE does this student bring to HARVARD." Value is $$, value is IQ, value is generational wealth and connections, and in 2018 value is also your race, and where you come from. When you go in for a job interview, you don't say "This is why I deserve to work here," you say "This is exactly how I specifically can add value to your company." This guy's "bullshit" story about the Bronx is a shrewd exercise in exercising the value of his cultural capital. He knows that his background adds value to his place as an ivy student and as an activist, and he's wisely wearing it on his sleeve. Explain the problem with that?

    From the same article you listed it says “Thorough and comprehensive analysis of the data and evidence makes clear that Harvard College does not discriminate against applicants from any group, including Asian-Americans, whose rate of admission has grown 29 percent over the last decade,” Harvard said in a statement. “Mr. Blum and his organization’s incomplete and misleading data analysis paint a dangerously inaccurate picture of Harvard College’s whole-person admissions process by omitting critical data and information factors.” Harvard clearly says that the personal statement and letter of recommendations are also determining factors of admittance to its University. College in general is Extremely competitive to get in as the years go by. Excellent grades and test scores are no longer a guarantee for anyone's admittance. Also what are the majors the most asian applicants are declaring? Thats also an important factor as well. If they are applying for an impacted major that in itself decreases everyone's chances as a whole of getting in regardless of race. Id honestly recommend declaring an unimpacted major on the application and changing your major once you have been admitted to increase the chances of getting in. This is what my sister did and it helped her get into the door of several universities much easier than declaring an impacted major.

    learning sharin You Are referencing a statement that I quoted from a rep at Harvard University. So I am not appealing to anything. This is what Harvard said. I am responding to the belief that Harvard “barely accepts Asians” or that “blacks and Hispanics are more likely to get in than asians”. Showing 29% proves that Asians are still the highest accepted minority. I’m not implying anything. There have been a lot of statements pushing that Asians have better test scores and grades than other races but still don’t get in as much. And my response to that was, That’s not all they determine with acceptance. Your personal statement is a prevalent piece of the application. The people stating that Asians have higher test scores/grades say nothing but how wonderful all of their personal statements/letters or recs and outside of school activities are. These are all essential to admission. You are making a lot of false assumptions based on what I wrote.

    You did not read the comment I was responding with the quote from Harvard. I used this quote from an article that someone on this comment feed before me, linked and used a quote from in their comment. I know what an appeal to authority is and this is definitely not it. I never said Harvard said it wasn't true and that is it. Clearly, Harvard says there are no systems in place that exclude asians on the basis of being asian, with an explanation and a statistic. Again an appeal to authority would have simply just stated that this is true because Harvard said it, with no evidence to back it up. You are failing to recognize that Asians are still being accepted at higher rates than any other minority and this goes for every Ivy League school and practically every university in America except for hbcu's. At UCLA, a highly rated university, Asians even supersede white people as the highest attending racial group. So for people to say things like "asians barely get accepted" is evidentially not true. Why can't you recognize this, when the numbers disprove this?
