Classic V8 Perkins - love it. We had Daimler Roadliner buses with this unit in UK and loads of fire aplliances, some of which I sampled

And pressure. These Perkins beasts can move a lot of water in a short space of time, great pumpers. It's only recently that the old Perkins-powered Dennis pumpers have been replaced here in Scotland. There are still a few of these Dennis-Perkins pumpers on the go which is a pretty good testament.

I enjoying seeing the truck being driven,I used to work for a UK company that ran a lot of Leyland trucks Mastiff, Clydesdale,Terrier, Marathon, beautiful sounding engine's, the noise due to the low height of the cab ment you were sitting along side the engine, you'd have needed a powerful radio and speakers, these tipper's mainly use to carry sand and gravel and the other trucks working general haulage.

Back in its day this one was a single Axel semi. Carted reo bar mesh sheets all over southern tassie I was told

Couldnt believe my luck to hear an Australian accent. I was sure we would be driving up some narrow lane through hedge rows. Great old truck.

My old boy had one of these with an 18 speed road ranger. Used to love going out in it with him. Thanks for the memories!

I have a leyland mastiff in my machanic garage and I bild it up in to a new dump truck det sam tenkering, engenering. Its fod it taiks to get the Job don. Write now i'm in my machanic garage Got a old amarican truck gona bild it up,repar it, tenkering, engenering Gona meik a new truck Got sam steal from my scrap yard wer I have a workshop and old cars. Wen the truck is dan my friend IS going to buy it for 300.000💵 😎. I have a busy week.

The Mastiff was great to drive plenty of power for 1971 and as you say the sound of that engine memories

@@oneupthesleevecustomsautom2195 No, not a turbo! I think the engine was around 150 hp, so it was often in first gear on the hills. Now I drive a 420 hp Volvo auto, different world, luxury compared to the old girl.

That's not an issue they would run on engine oil straight in the tank too

I've got a mazda truck now witha perkins 6-247

These sounded sublime and could rev to 3k rpm but... wouldn't have enough power to pull your foreskin back..

This was good for the size of the truck but that been said it had been rebuilt and fuel wound up

@@oneupthesleevecustomsautom2195 I Used to work for a company which had a D series 2817 (horrendous to drive) and two Ford Cargos, one a 2517& the other 2817 all three fitted with the 540Perkins V8. They made a good noise but had little torque. A shame Perkins never turbocharged & intercooled them as I think they would made decent power. The 2820 version had the perkins 640 V8 and this wasn't quite so bad but even at 28t it struggled. Again with twin chargers and an intercooler it could have competed with the Swedes..

Some old trucks deserve saving and some don't! These poverty spec gutless guvnor 's trucks were not loved when they were new!
